The island of Okinawa

Okinawa is a wonderful place to homeschool, with abundant resources to enjoy and discover.

Relationships:

Not only with other English speakers, but getting to know and share in the lives of Okinawans. Attending festivals and other local events is a great way of seeing Okinawa through the eyes of the locals! There are many resources for learning the language and engaging with the Okinawan people.

Ocean activities:

Okinawa is a subtropical paradise. Swimming, tide pooling, kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing are different ways to experience this island. And of course, there's nowhere better for scuba or snorkeling! Get up close and personal with sharks, dolphins and whales at the Churaumi Aquarium!

Cultural activities:

There is so much culture and history on Okinawa. Shuri castle and many other castle ruins; local crafts such as pottery, glass-blowing, and textiles; Japanese study; cultural centers like Okinawa World; and World War II history and battle sites. Okinawa may be a tiny island but it's packed with cultural opportunities.

Anything outdoors:

Okinawa has more than just the ocean for activities! Some of the inland activities include hiking and exploring waterfalls, kayaking in the mangroves, or going to amazing parks. The weather makes this enjoyable almost year-round.
