Footnotes of Distinction:
Senior Moment! Al Lum arrived at the golf course fifteen minutes before his tee time and then realized that he had left his golf clubs in his other car! Fortunately he was able to rent a set of Taylor Made clubs from the course.
Greenie Magic! Al Lum was able to bag two greenies on his rented clubs! On hole #8, the 166 yard elevated green, his ball stopped 6” from rolling off the back of the green. Fortunately for Al, no one else hit the green! On hole #15, the 158 yard elevated green, his ball ended up 8’ to the right of the pin. His playing partner, Patrick “Cowboy” Hanoa, told Al that he should buy these clubs!

This month’s early bird winner is Brian Ito. He got 20 points for having his name pulled and his entry postmarked before the registration deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – Danny Sanchez (65).
Low Net Front – Russell Tagawa (32) – 48 points. Henry Hearn (33) – 20 points. Danny Sanchez would have won with a 30(!) but did not enter this event.
Low Net Back – Rex Shin & Michael Ha (33 tie) – 34 points each.
Low Net Total – Rex Shin & Henry Hearn (67 tie) – 55 points each. Danny Sanchez would have won with a 65(!) but did not enter this event.
Low Gross – Michael Ha (74) – 12 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Michael Ha – 16 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Anne Brew – 2 points. Anne was the only woman who entered. Fortunately for Anne, her drive was in the fairway and so she won her money back!
Low Putts – Michael “The Dominator” Ha (29) – 14 points. Scott Sato & Evan Yamoto (31) – 3 points each. This is the fourth month in a row that Michael has won this event!
Greenies (4) – Patrick “Cowboy” Hanoa (#3), Al Lum (#5), Nigel Parker (#12), Dennis Loput (#17) -- 31 points for each Greenie. “Cowboy” Hanoa also won a Greenie last month.

Ray Cox 206
Ray Saito 155
James Chang 153
Paul Chang 135
Andy Sayakhot 127
Footnotes of Distinction:
He could have been a Contender! Danny Sanchez shot lights out! Playing to a 37 handicap, he shot a 102 for a net 65! He would have won Low Net Front, Low Net Total and a bunch of Net Skins but did not enter any of these events!
Putting Foolery! Our POY leader, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa was having an off day. On hole #5, the 149 yard par 3, his drive landed on the green and then he proceeded to five(!) putt for a 6. He ended up with 25 putts on the front nine and 18 on the back nine for a total of 45 putts. One or both of those has to be a club record.
How to convert an Eagle to a Birdie! On hole #11, the short 291 yard par 4, Patrick “Cowboy” Hanoa’s second shot would have gone in the hole for an Eagle but the group in front of him had left the flag stick leaning against the edge of the hole which prevented his ball from going in! This left him with a ¼” tap in birdie. Golfers – please remember to replace the flag stick upright!
Great Ball Striker! Dennis Loput is a great ball striker. On hole #11, his chip shot to the green hit James Chang’s ball. He repeated this feat on hole #12 by chipping up and hitting Ron Kienast’s ball. I’m wondering how Dennis does at pool.
Putting Fool! Michael “The Dominator” Ha has dominated the Low Putt event the last four months in a row!
Double Jeopardy! On hole #15, Willam Au hit a short drive into the trees on the left. His second shot went across the fairway but he couldn’t find it and so he played it as a lost ball. When they got to the green, Taylor Sanchez realized that he had mistakenly played William’s ball! This mistake costs both of them two strokes. Golfers – remember to always check your balls before hitting them!
Weight for This! Rex Shin was having an exceptional round of golf. On hole #13, he realized that the balancing weights in his putter had fallen out. He ended up lipping out two putts and still managed to shoot a net 67!
Staying Power! Michael “The Dominator” Ha played two rounds of golf at Los Verdes today. He shot a 7x in the morning and followed that up with a 74 during the tournament!
For those of you interested in statistics, the Net Scoring Average attachment put together by Brian Ito shows the hole by hole net scoring averages so you can see which holes were easier/harder.
Big money winner was Michael “The Dominator” Ha. He tied for Low Net Back (34 points), won Low Gross (12 points), won Long Drive (16 points), won Low Putts (14 points), 2 Skins (92 points) for a total of 168 points. Coming in second was Russell Tagawa. He won Low Net Front (48 points) and 2 Skins (92 points) for a total of 140 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1966 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (4) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (22), M&M did not play and so Al remains up by five.

Footnotes of Distinction:
Reversal of Fortune! Michael Ha, playing to a 6 handicap, struggled on the front nine and shot 16(!) over for a 56. He followed that up was a 1(!) over 37 on the back nine. Great come back, Michael! I can only imagine how you would have felt if your scores had been reversed!
Putting Blues! Michael Ha has consistently been one of our best putters. Today was a bit different. He 5 putt hole #7 and followed that up with a 4 putt on hole #8. He ended up with 39 putts! What’s very ironic about this is that he also 4 putt and 5 putt back to back holes at our El Dorado tournament in October!
Spreading the Wealth. We had a total of 8 Gross Skins won. I think that may be a record. 2 were won by Jay Inouye. 7 Skins were won on the front. The only one on the back nine was won by Michael Ha. His one over paid off!
An Albatross! Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa playing to a 24 handicap, birdied the par five number 9 hole. This was the number five handicap hole and so he got an extra two strokes to net an Albatross!
He could have been in the money! Ray Cox shot extremely well but didn’t enter any of the Net Score events otherwise he would have won 165 points! Linda Cox – Be sure to enter your hubby in the Net Score events!!!
For those of you interested in statistics, the Field Scoring Average attachment put together by Brian Ito shows the hole by hole net scoring averages so you can see which holes were easier/harder.

2024 Tournament Results
Via Verde Country Club
September 21 , 2024
Via Verde proved to be an extremely challenging course for everyone. Men played from the Blues which added to its difficulty. High scores were the norm. How difficult was it? The winning net score was a 75 and only seven managed to break 80! Most common complaint was that the course was in very poor condition, especially for a private golf course. The fairways were not maintained, the rough was thick and came into play often, there was mud or bare spots on the fairways, the bunkers lacked adequate sand, and whether you were in the fairway or in the rough, you had to worry about your ball ending up in a hole (not the one on the green!). Best part of the Via Verde experience was the large bucket of range balls provided, their clubhouse and the weather.
We had only 22 golfers including one guest, David Yanamura (Mike Ikeda), due to two last minute cancellations. This was our smallest turnout of the season. The par 3’s were very challenging. Only a few golfers were able to hit the greens and only 3 of the 4 Greenies were won. Nigel Parker had the closest Greenie when he ended up 30” in front of the hole. He sank his putt for a birdie! Michael Ha continued to play well and scored in almost every category.
This month’s early bird winner is Patrick Hanoa. He got 20 points for having his name pulled and his entry postmarked before the registration deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – Ray Cox (75). Second – Michael Ha (76)
Low Net Front – Ted Suekawa (34) – 29 points. Craig Ogawa, Patrick Hanoa & Andy Sayakhot (37 tie) – 4 points each.
Low Net Back – Michael Ha (38) – 29 points. Al Lum (40) – 12 points.
Low Net Total – Michael Ha (76) – 52 points. Ted Suekawa (77) – 22 points. Ray Cox would have won but did not enter!
Low Gross – Michael Ha (82) – 6 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Ron Kienast – 8 points
Long Drive (Women) – Linda Cox – 2 points. Linda was the only one who entered. It’s a good thing that she hit the fairway! She also won last month!
Low Putts – Michael Ha & Russell Tagawa (29 tie) – 7 points each.
Greenies (3 of 4) – Andy Sayakhot (#3), Russell Tagawa (#11), Nigel Parker (#13) -- 26 points for each Greenie. No one won a Greenie on #9.
Gross Skins (9: 5 birdies & 4 pars) – Brian Ito (#1 birdie & 7 par), Ray Cox (#4 par), Michael Ha (#5 birdie & 12 birdie), Patrick Hanoa (#6 birdie), David Yanamura, guest (#13 par), Russell Tagawa (#15 birdie & 17 par) -- 20 points for each Skin.
Net Skins (8: 2 Eagle! 5 birdies, 1 par) – Dennis Loput (#1 birdie & 18 par), Craig Ogawa (#3 birdie), Patrick Hanoa (#6 Eagle! & 15 birdie), (#9 birdie), Nigel Parker (#13 Eagle!), Bryan Somen (#16 birdie). 11 points for each Net Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) – All POY points are based solely on tournament performance. 100 points are awarded to the tournament champion. The next nine places receive reduced points. If no points are earned, a player’s cumulative points remain unchanged.
Patrick Hanoa scored 45 points this month to increase his lead over the rest of the pack by 91 points! With only one tournament remaining, he is now heavy odds on favorite to win the POY but could still be caught by Andy Sayakhot or Henry Hearn (they would have to win the tournament and Patrick would have to be shut out!). Of the top six, only Brian Ito and Michael Ha also added points to their score this month.
Patrick Hanoa 404
Andy Sayakhot 313
Henry Hearn 307
Brian Ito 266
Michael Ha 265
James Chang 203
Footnotes of Distinction:
Lucky Charm! Al Lum is Patrick Hanoa’s “Lucky Charm”. Every time they’re paired to play together, Patrick does extremely well. He surged into the POY lead after this tournament and won the tournament at Los Verdes in June. Al will now be charging Patrick a “Lucky Charm” fee.
Reversal of Fortune! Andy Sayakhot has been rapidly improving (do I hear “Most Improved Golfer”?), has been playing extremely well and has been in contention for POY honors. Playing to an 11 handicap, he shot a respectable 43 on the front. He followed this up w/ a 74(!) on the back! What?!!! No way, Andy! After taking a triple on the par 5, #10, he decided to take a shot of whiskey. He had done that at Rio Hondo on the par 3 over the water and almost Aced it! He also won that tournament. #11 was also a par three but the results were completed different. He hit his first five tee shots out of bounds and ended up taking a 16 (Ouch!). He recovered w/ a bogie on #11 but the rest of the round ending up being disastrous. No more whiskey for you, Andy!!!
Back Nine Blues! Andy was not the only one w/ a high score on the back. Two others shot a 74 and a 76 on the back! 12 of our 22 golfers had a score of 100 or more which included a 139 and a 140! If we were bowling, those would still be bad scores!
For those of you interested in statistics, the Field Scoring Average attachment put together by Brian Ito shows the hole by hole net scoring averages so you can see which holes were easier/harder. In my opinion, they were all harder! The back nine played almost nine strokes over net par!
Big money winner was our second place finisher, Michael Ha. He won Low Net Back (29 points), Low Net Total (52 points), Low Gross (6 points), tied Low Putts (7 points), and won two Skins (40 points) for a total of 134 points. Finishing second was Russsell Tagawa. He tied Low Putts (7 points), won a Greenie (26 points) and two Skins (40 points) for a total of 73 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty has increased to 1616 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), M&M did not play. Al remains up 25 for the year! Hey M&M – you still owe me $6 from last month!
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: El Dorado Golf Course, Sunday, October 21st, 10:00 a.m. This is our last tournament before the EOY (End of Year) tournament. Deadline to register and pay is October 1st. Priority is given to members based on the postmark date. Guests are welcome to play if space permits.

Ray “3-K” Saito posted a net 67 (18 handicap) to finish third and Jay Inouye posted a net 71 (14 handicap) to round out our top five finishers.
This month’s early bird winner is new member Clarence Lew. He got 20 points for having his name pulled and his entry postmarked before the registration deadline. This is the second month in a row that a new member has won the early bird! It really pays to join OCAAGA!

Footnotes of Distinction:
4-3-2-1! Mike “M&M” Miyasaki was breaking in his new Ai-One Odyssey putter. These are the number of putts he had on the first four holes! “M&M” – did you get a money back guarantee on your new putter.
Low Gross Winner! How do you win Low Gross? If you’re Mike “M&M” Miyasaki, you make a 9 on hole # 1 (including four putts) and end up shooting an 82! Also, Andy Sayakhot, who shot a 77(!) doesn’t enter the event.
Hotter than Hot! Andy “Mr. Hot” Sayakhot has been on a roll. Two months ago at Rio Honda, he shot a 78 w/ a 16 handicap. That was his best score ever by 3 strokes! Today he shot a 77 w/ an 11 handicap! Do I hear “most improved player”? Andy, I want some of whatever you’re taking!
Lost & Found. Al Lum reached the green on hole #10 and realized that he was missing his range finder and golf glove. He went back to the #10 tee box and Rex Shin not only had his range finder and golf glove, but also had three of his irons! Another Senior moment for Al.
Unbelievable Skinless Run! The foursome of Al Lum, Patrick Hanoa, David Kato & Ray Cox decided to have a friendly Skins game. Al won the first Skin on hole #1 w/ a net par and then no one won another Skin until hole #10, which was won by David Kato w/ a par – he won 9 Skins on that hole! He added another three Skins to dominate Al, Patrick & Ray.
I need a baby sitter! Why is Rex Shin always asking for a baby sitter? Inquiring minds want to know!
Big money winner was our tournament champion Rex Shin. He tied Low Net Front (30 points), won Low Net Total (59 points), a Greenie (36 points), and a Net Skin (50 points) for a total of 185 points! He was followed by Andy “Mr. Hot” Sayakhot w/ 155 points and Will Haberman w/ 152 points. Interestingly, all three of these big money winners played in the final group.
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (1) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (18), Al won four Skins from “M&M”. Al is up 19 for the year!
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.

Los Verdes Golf Course
June , 2024
We want to welcome new members Neil Muranaka (referred by Mike “M&M” Miyasaki), John Choi (Michael Ha’s brother-in-law), and Clarence & Leslie Lew (referred by Ray “3-K” Saito). This brings our total membership up to 70.
We had a total of 40 golfers (our max) which included new members Neil Muranaka and Hiroshi Okada and one guest, Nigel Parker (Will Haberman). Nigel is now a new member which brings our total membership up to 71. Los Verdes’ greens can be somewhat challenging but not for Patrick Hanoa. He had 10 putts on the back nine and shot a 1 under 34, his best nine ever! He ended up shooting a 78 for a net 66 and is our tournament champion.
This month’s early bird winner is new member Hiroshi Okada. He got 20 points for having his name pulled and his entry postmarked before the registration deadline.

Andy Sayakhot 243
Brian Ito 211
David Kato 191

Footnotes of Distinction:
Iron Mike. Michael “Iron Mike” Ha has a regular starting time at Los Verdes every Sunday. So what did he do since we were already playing at Los Verdes? He plays his first round at 6:00 and shoots a 74! It must have tired him out (he was probably lacking iron) because he only shot an 83 during the tournament.
Reversal of Fortune. Patrick Hanoa, playing to a 12 handicap shot a 44 front w/ 16 putts. He was playing w/ Al Lum and was up one on him. The back nine was a completely different story. He shot a 34(!) which consisted of 2 birdies, 6 pars, and a bogie on #18. He had 10(!) putts: 6 one putts, 2 two putts and a chip-in for a 0 putt. On hole #16, the 462 yard par 5, his third shot landed on the left side of the green, pin high. He had about a 14’ putt which ended up on the bottom side of the lip of the cup. He waited for 4 or 5 seconds and then the ball fell in! Awesome achievement, Patrick!!!
Lucky Charm. Al Lum is everyone’s Lucky Charm. He played w/ Patrick Hanoa this month and Patrick shot the best nine of his life (one under 34). Last month he played w/ Andy Sayakhot and Andy shot the best round of his life by three strokes! Al will now be charging if you want to pick him as a playing partner.
Not So Lucky. Al Lum had to play against our tournament winner, Patrick Hanoa. Patrick had to give Al four strokes on the back nine. Every time Al thought he might win a Skin, Patrick would tie him! On hole #18, the 403 yard par 4, Al hit a great drive, advanced his ball on his second shot and put his third shot in the bunker in front of the green. Talk about unlucky. His ball ended up at the back of the bunker under a concaved lip! After four unsuccessful attempts of trying to get out of the trap, he picked up for a 12! Patrick thanked Al for buying him lunch!
Big money winner was our tournament champion Patrick Hanoa. He won Low Net Back (58 points), Low Net Total (91 points), Low Putts (18 points), a Greenie (38 points), a Gross Skin (60 points) and a Net Skin (28 points) for a total of 293 points! Patrick – you should have bought Al Lum lunch! In second was Russel Tagawa. He won Low Gross (10 points), two Greenies (76 points) and two Gross Skins (120 points) for a total of 206 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (0) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), M&M is still holding off from playing due to having had cataract surgery. Al remains up 15 for the year and is grateful that “M&M” didn’t play because he shot 111 w/ a 12 on 18!
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Rancho San Joaquin, Saturday, July 21st, 10:00 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is July 1st. Priority is given to members based on the postmark date. Guests are welcome to play if space permits.

Low Net Back – Jon Suzuki (31) – 50 points. “Dancing” Dee Ishida (30) – 21 points.
Low Net Total – Andy Sayakhot (62!) – 73 points. John Suzuki (64) – 31 points
Low Gross – William Au (85) – 8 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Gary Umetsu – 12 points
Long Drive (Women) – Marlene Ching – 6 points.
Low Putts – Scott Sato (27) – 12 points. Jay Inouye & Dennis Loput (32 tie) – 2 points each.
Greenies (5) – Andy Sayakhot (#7), Joey Dang (#8), Ray Cox (#10 & 14), Gary Umetsu (#17) -- 22 points for each Greenie.
Gross Skins (3!) – Gary Umetsu (#2 par), Patrick Hanoa (#7 birdie), Ray Cox (#14 birdie), 73 points for each Skin. Ray Cox also won a Gross Skin last month. Andy Sayakhot didn’t enter Greenies otherwise his birdie (almost Ace) on #7 would have cancelled out Patrick Hanoa’s Skin on that hole. Patrick had to make a 20’ putt for his birdie.
Net Skins (8: 4 Eagles! & 4 birdies) – Jon Suzuki (birdies on #1, 14 & 18), Andy Sayakhot (Eagles on #5! & 10!), Al Lum (#6 birdie), Brian Ito (#9 Eagle!), & “Dancing” Dee Ishida (#12 Eagle!). 23 points for each Net Skin. Jon Suzuki also won a Net Skin last month. This was the first month that Steve Kumagai did not win a Net Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) – All POY points are based solely on tournament performance. 100 points are awarded to the tournament champion. The next nine places receive reduced points. If no points are earned, a player’s cumulative points remain unchanged.
This has become a very tight race since only 109 points separates the first six places and 100 points is awarded to the tournament champion.
Henry Hearn kept his lead position but Andy Sayakhot, w/ his tournament win, moved into the second spot surpassing Patrick Hanoa, last month’s co-champion. Brian Ito dropped to 4th. James Chang jumped into 5th and David Kato rounded off the top six places.
Henry Hearn 277
Andy Sayakhot 243
Patrick Hanoa 185
Brian Ito 178
James Chang 173
David Kato 168
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Looking good! Conversation between Al Lum & Andy Sayakhot: AL: How old are you? AS: 75. AL: Wow, I’m 75 too. You look very good.
AS: Thank you.
AL: What month?
AS: May. AL: I’m April.
Scott Sato – Al, he was born in ’75!
2) Ball in the Bush! Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu put his tee shot into the bunker. His next shot ended up in the bush. He couldn’t find his ball. This gives a new meaning to Gil losing his ball in the bush.
3) No Stud, No Dud! No winner this month since we had a guest playing.
Big money winner was Andy Sayakhot. He won Low Net Front (50 points), Low Net Total (73 points), two Greenies (44 points) and two Net Skins (46 points) for a total of 213 points! In second was Jon Suzuki w/ 150 points (Low Net Back, second Low Net Total and two Net Skins), followed very closely by Ray Cox w/ 146 points (two Skins).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (1) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), M&M did not play due to having cataract surgery. “Can you see me now?” Al remains up 15 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Los Verdes, Sunday, June 16, 10:00 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is June 1st. Priority is given to members based on the postmark date. Guests are welcome to play if space permits.
La Mirada Golf Course
April 21, 2024
This was the second year in a row that OCAAGA played at La Mirada. We had great golf weather, as evidenced by the number of golfers wearing shorts, and didn’t have to contend w/ the extremely thick rough that we experienced last year. However, the punched greens did create putting challenges for many of us. We had 36 golfers and no guests. Men played from the Blues (6,083 yards, par 70) and women from the Reds (5,634 yards, par 71).
Congratulations to our co-tournament champions Patrick Hanoa & Michael Ha. They both carded net 67. They were followed by Dennis Loput, Henry Hearn & Steve Kumagai who tied w/ net 70.
This month’s early bird winner is “Dancing Dee” Ishida. She got 20 points for having her name pulled and having her entry postmarked before the registration deadline.
Results:
Tournament Co-Champions – Patrick Hanoa & Michael Ha (67 tie)
Low Net Front – Michael Ha (32) – 50 points. Anne Brew, Patrick Hanoa & Henry Hearn (33 tie) – 7 points each.
Low Net Back – Ron Kienast, Patrick Hanoa & Andy Sayakhot (34 tie) – 24 points each.
Low Net Total – Patrick Hanoa & Michael Ha (67 tie) -- 55 points each.
Low Gross – Michael Ha (74) – 10 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Michael Ha – 16 points
Long Drive (Women) – Anne Brew – 8 points.
Low Putts – Michael Ha (27) – 15 points. Michael was also last month’s winner. Patrick Hanoa (28) – 6 points. Patrick is becoming a bridesmaid as he was second to Michael last month! Obviously, the punched greens didn’t affect these two.
Greenies (5) – Patrick Hanoa (#3 & 17), Michael Ha (#5 & 9), Al Lum (#13) -- 24 points for each Greenie.
Gross Skins (7: 6 birdies & 1 par) – Michael Ha (birdies on #5 & 14), Mike Miyasaki (#7 birdie), Ray Cox (#10 birdie), Ron Kienast (#13 par & 15 birdie), Patrick Hanoa (#17 birdie) -- 28 points for each Skin. Michael Ha, Mike Miyasaki & Ray Cox all won a Gross Skin last month.
Net Skins (7: 4 Eagles! & 3 birdies) – Jon Suzuki (#3 Eagle!), Frank Doi (#4 birdie), Anne Brew (#5 Eagle!), Jay Inouye (#6 birdie), Mike Miyasaki (#8 Eagle!), Craig Ogawa (#11 birdie), Steve Kumagai (#12 Eagle!). 25 points for each Net Skin. Hats off to Steve Kumagai. He is the only one who has won a Net Skin in all four tournaments!
Player of the Year (POY) – All POY points are based solely on tournament performance. 100 points are awarded to the tournament champion. The next nine places receive reduced points. If no points are earned, a player’s cumulative points remain unchanged.
Henry Hearn retained his lead position. Patrick Hanoa vaulted from 6th place to 2nd after earning co-tournament champion honors this month. Patrick was POY in 2010. Brian Ito moved up from 4th to 3rd. Andy Sayakhot moved up from 5th to 4th. David Kato dropped from 2nd to 5th and is tied w/ Michael Ha who made the top five for the first time this year w/ his co-tournament champion win.
Henry Hearn 252
Patrick Hanoa 185
Brian Ito 148
Andy Sayakhot 143
David Kato 125
Michael Ha 125
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Anyone see a three wood? On hole #1, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa took his three wood out and left it there w/ the head cover still intact! He didn’t find it until he finished the round!
2) Anger Management. Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa was still fuming for losing his three wood that when he got to hole #3 he immediately teed his ball up and hit his driver not realizing that it was a par 3! His ball sailed over the green. At least he wasn’t short!
3) 4 the hard way. On hole #8, the 427 yard par 4, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki hit a huge drive and then realized that he had hit from the white tees! That was a one stroke penalty and he had to hit his next shot from the blue tees. He hit another big drive, made a great shot to the green and then sank his putt for a 4! M&M – you are the man!
4) Anyone lose a sand wedge? Craig Ogawa overheard his playing partners say that Al Lum had lost his sand wedge. No Craig, Al lost his sandwich to one of those pesky squirrels who tore thru his plastic sandwich bag.
5) No laughing matter! Michael “Ha-Ha” Ha had an amazing golf day. He dominated the field in almost every category and took home the lion’s share of points. The only events he didn’t win anything were Low Net Back and Women’s Long Drive!
6) No Stud, No Dud! The two middle net scores (no “stud”, no “dud”) on each hole for each foursome are used w/ the top & bottom net scores thrown out. Team #6 (Michael Ha, Paul Chung, Henry Hearn & Andy Sayathot) had the best net score of 142. They each received 5 points. They just edged out Team #4 (Gary Umetsu, Dennis Loput, Ron Kienast & Ray Cox) who had a score of 143.
Big money winner was Michael “Ha-Ha” Ha. He won Low Net Front (50 points), tied Low Net Total (55 points), Low Gross (10), Long Drive (10), Low Putts (15), two Greenies (48 points), and two Gross Skins (56) for a total of 244 points (249 if you include the No Stud, No Dud) . He was followed by Patrick Hanoa w/ 168 points (tied second Low Net Front, tied Low Net Back, tied Low Net Total, second Low Putts, two Greenies and one Gross Skin).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (23), M&M had another off day and Al won by 7! Al is up 13 for the year. Much to Al’s disappointment, M&M will be missing the next several tournaments due to scheduled cataract eye surgery and other obligations. Al will be missing M&M’s $$$.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Rio Hondo Golf Course, Saturday, May 18, 9:48 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is May 1st. Priority is given to members based on the postmark date. Guests are welcome to play if space permits.
We have a scoring correction! Mike Miyasaki recorded a 4 (par) on #7 but it should be a 5 due to the one stroke penalty for hitting from the White tees.
This means that his par on #7 did not win a Gross Skin. Mike has been DQ’d for La Mirada tournament (signing an incorrect scorecard) and any monies won by Mike has been returned to the pots for redistribution.
This was the first time that OCAAGA has played at Mountain Meadows. We had 32 golfers and no guests. Men played from the Blues (6,440 yards) and women from the Reds (5,519 yards). The weatherman lied! A ¼” of rain was predicted but we had much more w/ several downpours. The good news was that there was no wind and no restrictions on the use of the golf carts. Temps were in the high 50’s and by 2:00 the rains had stopped. Playing in the rain and cool temps proved to be challenging especially if you had trouble gripping your clubs or didn’t dress appropriately for the weather.
Congratulations to our tournament champion Henry Hearn! He shot piano keys (88) for a net 72! This is becoming a habit for Henry. He was also tournament champion in January. Andy Sayakhot & David Kato both tied for second w/ net 74’s. Kato-san also tied for second last month.
This month’s early bird winner is Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He got 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry postmarked before the deadline.

Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Who’s on First?! Patrick Honoa was playing w/ new member Dennis Loput. On the first tee, Patrick asked Dennis if he was in Low Putts. Dennis replied, yes, I’m Loput. Side note: Loput actually did enter Low Putts!
2) Elder Brain Fart (EBF)! Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu went to have his clubs regripped the day before the tournament. The golf shop said they were backed up but would have his clubs ready the next day. So Gil left them there!
3) Fives are not my friend! Al Lum, playing to a 24 handicap, had started off bogie, bogie, par. When he got to hole #4, a par 4, he five putt for an 8(!) and then followed that up w/ a 9 (quintuple bogie) on #5 (he was five for five)! He’s still licking his wounds. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki, playing to a 2 handicap, didn’t want Al to feel bad and so he also took an 8 and a 9. Ironically, the 8 was on the same hole that Al took an 8!
4) Rain, Rain, Go Away! It was raining so hard that Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu, Suzie Yanagita, and “Dancing” Dee Ishida decided to call it quits after nine holes. Their playing partner, Ted Suekawa, ended up joining the group behind them. Even though they only played nine holes, “Aloha Kid” Ishizu and “Dancing” Dee both won a Net Skin. “Dancing” Dee won w/ a net “1” on hole #6! It pays to have a 49 handicap!!!
5) No Greenie! On #13, the very long and challenging 213 yard par 3 over a ravine, James Chang stuck his drive 6’ or 10’ (we had two different opinions) from the pin. However, James didn’t enter Greenies!
6) The Kato Kurse! On hole #15, the par five that was shortened to a par 4, David Kato and Ray Saito both landed their drives in the middle of the fairway. David turns to Ray and says: “I’m looking at two double bogies”. He was half right. Ray double bogied and David bogied.
7) No Stud, No Dud! In our inaugural team match of No Stud, No Dud, three teams tied! The two middle net scores (no “stud”, no “dud”) on each hole were used w/ the top & bottom net scores thrown out. Team #4 (Andy Sayakhot, Joey Dang, Art Fukumoto, Jon Suzuki), Team #5 (James Chang, David Kato, Jay Inouye, Raymond Saito), and Team #7 (Nellie Lelevier, Linda Cox, Ray Cox, Michael Yee) all had scores of 157. The deciding factor was hole #18. Team 7 had an 8 and the other two had a 9. So Nellie Lelevier, Linda Cox, Ray Cox & Michael Yee each received 5 points but had to be physically present to win. Unfortunately for Mike, he left early.
Big money winner was Henry Hearn. He won Low Net Back (52 points) and Low Net Total (77 points for a total of 129 points. He was followed by David Kato w/ 93 points (tied Low Net Back, tied Low Net Total and three Net Skins).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (24), M&M had a very off day and Al won by six! This was their first match up for the year and so Al is up six.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: La Mirada Golf Course, Sunday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is April 1st. So don’t be a fool and remember to enter early. Priority is given to members based on the postmark date. Guests are welcome to play if space permits.
Temps in the 60’s and clear skies made for perfect golf weather. We had 36 golfers including two guests, Mark Ito (Brian’s dad) and Terry Weber (filling in for Mike “M&M” Miyasaki). For many of us, the course played tough as evidenced by the number of high scores but there were several who played extremely well.
Congratulations to our tournament champion Patrick Hanoa! He shot a 79 for a net 66! He managed to edge out Brian Ito, David Kato and Jon Suzuki, who all netted 67. Great shooting guys!
This month’s early bird winner is Linda Cox. She gets 20 points for having her name pulled and having her entry in before the deadline.

Patrick Hanoa & Steve Kumagai also had a Net Skin last month.
Player of the Year (POY) – All POY points are based solely on tournament performance. 100 points are awarded to the tournament champion. The next nine places receive reduced points. If no points are earned, their cumulative points remain unchanged.
There were a few position changes. Brian Ito became the POY leader w/ 110 points after scoring 60 points for tying for second this month. Patrick Hanoa moved into a tie for second w/ Henry Hearn after scoring 100 points for being Tournament Champion.
Brian Ito 110
Henry Hearn 100 tie
Patrick Hanoa 100 tie
James Chang 65 tie
Scott Sato 65 tie
Gil Ishizu 65 tie
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Can you see me now? Ray Cox was driving Dennis Kaake back to his car after they had finished playing. Dennis started to panic when he couldn’t find his glasses. Dennis: “I usually keep them on top of my head”. Ray: “You’re wearing them!”
2) First Hole Blues. Henry Hearn, last month’s tournament champion, was on in two on hole #1, a par 4. He then proceeded to five(!) putt for a triple bogey. Ouch!
3) Beware of the Gil-vanator! Guest Terry Weber was filling in for Mike “M&M” Miyasaki and was riding w/ Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu. On hole #11, Gil’s second shot almost hit Terry in the head. On his fourth shot, his club flew out of his hands almost hitting Terry in the head again! Then on hole #14, Terry was on the green practicing his putting stroke and Gil chipped his ball striking Terry’s putter! Golf can be a very hazardous sport!
4) Zero Putt Birdie! Patrick Hanoa chipped his ball in on hole #14 for a birdie! This made the difference in him winning Low Putts w/ 28. Michael Ha was second w/ 29 putts which included a four putt green!
5) Albatross Man! Steve Fukumoto, playing to a 21 handicap, won three Net Skins – two eagles and an albatross on #11 (the par 5, #2 handicap hole) w/ a 4 for a net 2!
Big money winner was Patrick Hanoa. He won Low Net Back (42 points), Low Net Total (87 points), Low Putts (9 points), one Greenie (33 points), and one Net Skin (23 points) for a total of 194 points. He was followed by Steve Fukumoto w/ 144 points (tied Low Net Back, one Greenie, three Net Skins).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), M&M had to cancel and fortunately for Al, it saved him a ton of money!
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Mountain Meadows, Saturday, March 23, 10:50 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is March 1st. Please note that we have moved the deadline to register to the first of the month. Guests are welcome to play.
For our first tournament of the year, we played the shorter, par 70, Mesa Linda course. We were scheduled to play the longer, par 72, Los Lagos course, but the Costa Mesa management switched us at the last minute. Because of the mix up, all players will get a $12 refund or can apply it as a credit towards your next tournament. Weather proved to be ideal as the expected showers never showed up! We had clear skies w/ some patches of white clouds and temps in the low 60’s and we were all able to finish in daylight.
We had 38 golfers including new members Julie Zhu and Dennis Loput and repeat guests Doug Tambara and Ron & Linda Mizufuka (Ted Suekawa). It’s always nice to have these three guests play w/ us. Ron & Linda were previous members of OCAAGA. Three other new members, Aaron Hanoa, Hiroshi Okada & Kyle Doi did not play.
Congratulations to our tournament champion Henry Hearn! He carded a net 66 to dominate the field. He was followed by James Chang & Scott Sato (69 tie). All three of these guys are accustomed to winning. Both James Chang & Henry Hearn were contenders for POY (Player of the Year) in 2023, finishing 2nd & 3rd, respectively, behind our 2023 POY, Jay Inouye. Scott Sato has been POY three times!
This month’s early bird winner is Ron Kienast. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.

Footnotes of Distinction:
Hotter than Hot! Tournament Champion, Henry Hearn, shot his best round ever w/ a 77! This included a personal best of four birdies. Great shooting, Henry!
Sadder than Sad! Henry Hearn shot lights out but did not enter any Skins or Greenies!
He wanted to share the wealth.
Putting Duel! Scott Sato & William Au had a putting duel going on. Scott had 15 putts on the front nine and William had 16. Scotty remained up 1 until the #12, par 3. They both put their tee shots into the green side bunker. William holed his next shot for a birdie and no putts! Scotty one putt which made them even. They remained even the rest of the way except for the 17th hole when William one putt and Scotty two putt to lose by one. Sub-footnote: Scotty missed a 2’ birdie putt on the front nine (he never misses those!).
Big money winner was Henry Hearn. He won Low Net Front (50 points) and Low Net Total (80 points) for a total of 130 points. He was followed by Scott Sato w/ 98 points (tied Low Net Back, second Low Net Total, Low Gross, one Skin).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (0) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (17), M&M decided that going on a cruise would be more enjoyable than losing money to Al.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.

Guests are welcome to play.
San Dimas
San Dimas proved to be a challenge for many of us due to “slow” greens. Even w/ the slow greens, a few of us managed to turn in some remarkable scores.
We had 28 golfers including one guest, Ed Chung (Michael Ha). The weather was warm w/ an occasional breeze.
Congratulations to our tournament champion Henry Hearn! He carded a net 69 to dominate the field. He was followed by Jay Inouye & David Kato (72 tie).
This month’s early bird winner is Gary Umetsu. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline. This is Gary’s first early bird win, ever! Gary, you finally hit the lottery!

Spoiler Alert! With only one tournament remaining to determine our POY, it’s all over! The fat lady has sung! With his additional points for placing second in this tournament, Jay Inouye is our 2023 POY. He scored points in every tournament he played in and only missed last month’s tournament that had to be pushed back a week due to tropic storm Hilary. Up until this month it was a very close race between him and James Chang but James did not play in the last two tournaments. By winning this month’s tournament, Henry Hearn moved into the third spot. William Au moved up from 6th to 4th. Patrick Hanoa is in 5th, followed by David Kato and Ron Kienast.
With one tournament remaining, Jay Inouye cannot be mathematically beaten! However, the next fifth places are still up for grabs. Almost as good as kissing your sister!
Jay Inouye 402
James Chang 299
Henry Hearn 245
William Au 223
Patrick Hanoa 215
Ron Kienast 198
Footnotes of Distinction:
Hot Front! Playing to a 13 handicap (his lowest in quite a while due to shooting a 79 recently), David Kato smoked the front nine w/ a one over par of 37 (one birdie & two bogies)!
Hot Back! Playing to an 8 handicap, Ron Kienast smoked the back nine w/ an even par of 36 (two birdies & two bogies)! This was quite a reversal of last month’s tournament at Rancho San Joaquin when he withdrew after 16 holes.
Slow Greens! How slow were the greens? In my foursome, we had five putts that stopped short of the hole by 1”! Two of those were by David Kato, otherwise he would have ended up one under par on the front!
Chipping Fools! The greens may have been slow but several players managed to chip in their shots. Michael Ha on #3 for a birdie! David Kato – 35 yds from under a tree on #6 for a birdie! What’s more amazing is that his ball dislodged a rock that it was sitting on! Craig Ogawa on #13 for a par. Gary Umetsu on #14 for a par. My apologies if I missed anyone.

Brian Ito added 100 points for winning his first tournament and moved into fourth ahead of William Au by 1 point. Al Lum moved into the sixth spot for the first time by tying for second.

Jay Inouye charges to the front of the pack by winning this month’s tournament and adding 100 points. He bypasses James Chang who has held this position since March. J.I. is the only person who has scored POY points in every tournament this year. William Au earned 55 points to bring his total to 173 points which moves him into 4th. There were no other point changes amongst the top six.
Jay Inouye 337
James Chang 299
Patrick Hanoa 211
William Au 173
Ron Kienast 153
Henry Hearn 145
Footnotes of Distinction:
Will Play for Food! Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu, got to play w/ “Dancing” Dee Ishida, Susie Yanagita and new member Anne Brew. When asked if he minded playing w/ just women, he replied, they always bring food!
Can you see me now? On the par five, 18th hole, Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu, hit his third shot into the water in front of the green. He waited for quite a while (20 minutes?) for the players to clear the green. The reason he took so long was that he thought the players on the practice putting green were on the 18th green! Gil – you need to see you eye doc!
New Members & Guests. The club is accepting new members again and so feel free to invite guests.
Big money winner was this month’s tournament champion, Jay Inouye. He won Low Net Front (48 points), Low Net Total (80 points), one Greenie (23 points) and two Skins (72 points) for a total of 223 points. J.I. is on a roll! He also finished second last month.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), M&M did not play! Unfortunately for Al, he had another decent round of golf and wasn’t able to capitalize upon it. M&M remains up 11 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Rancho San Joaquin, Sunday, August 20th, 10:00 a.m. Deadline to register and pay is August 1st. Please note that we have moved the deadline to register to the first of the month. The Club has opened up to new members again and so guests are welcome to play.
We had 36 golfers including three guests: Ann Brew (Brian Ito), Ron & Linda Mizufuka (Ted Suekawa). Ron & Linda are previous members. It looks like all three guests may be joining OCAAGA since we are now accepting new members again.
We started off the tournament by playing in the fog! How foggy was it? It was so foggy that you couldn’t see where you were hitting or if it was safe to hit! We managed by yelling to see if it was clear and getting a response from either the group in front of us or sometimes the group in the adjacent fairway! Range finders didn’t work. I was playing in the fourth group and the fog didn’t lift until hole #6.
Congratulations to our tournament co-champions William Au & Steve Fukumoto. Both carded net 66’s! They were followed by “Dancing” Dee Ishida and Joey Dang who both shot net 68’s.
This month’s early bird winner is Steve Fukumoto. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.

James Chang continues to lead the POY pack. He has held this position since March. Jay Inouye and Patrick Hanoa maintained their 2nd & 3rd positions. All three added 19 tournament points. Ron Kienast, Henry Hearn and David Kato did not score any tournament points but kept their positions. Only James Chang and Jay Inouye have scored points in every tournament!

Footnotes of Distinction:
Chipper Guys! Joey Dang chipped in two shots from off the green to save pars! Mike “M&M” Miyasaki chipped in his shot on the par three 12th hole to make birdie!
Women of Distinction! Sharon Hanoa parred three of the four par threes and won Womens Long Drive. Linda Cox got a birdie on #11.
Double Sandy Par! On hole #14, a par 4, Jay Inouye put his drive in a fairway bunker, his second shot in a greenside bunker, his third shot on the green and sank his putt for a par! That’s doing it the hard way!
Net Skins Hogs! The winners of our new Net Skins contest were Gary Umetsu, Jay Inouye & Craig Ogawa who all happen to be playing in the same foursome!
New Members & Guests. The club is accepting new members again and so feel free to invite guests.
Big money winner was last year’s POY winner, Gary Umetsu. He tied for Low Putts (12 points), won two Skins (80 points) and two Net Skins (120 points) for a total of 212 points. He was followed by Jay Inouye w/ 163 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (4) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (22), Al finally had a decent round of golf and took 7 Skins from M&M. M&M remains up 11 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: El Dorado, Saturday, July 22nd, 10:00. Deadline to register and pay is July 1st. Please note that we have moved the deadline to register to the first of the month. The Club has opened up to new members again and so feel free to invite guests as well.
Updated May 25, 2023
This was our smallest turn out of the year w/ only 24 golfers including one guest, Jon Sasaki (Mike Miyasaki). It was the first time we have played at Westridge GC and it was by far the most difficult golf course we have ever played as evidenced by the number of high net scores posted – No one even came close to netting par and only 11 players managed to break 100! Patrick Hanoa was correct when he stated at the beginning of the round that he was told to expect to shoot ten strokes more than your average. The difficulty began at the driving range. It was located down a steep hill that was only accessible by foot unless you had the foresight to park near the range. But then you had to walk back up the hill to get to the carts. If you parked in the main lot, that was another hike up a short hill. Men played from the blues(!) which made it even more difficult. I don’t think playing from the whites would have made much of a difference. Perhaps we should have played from the reds but then, where would the women have hit from? BTW, there were only two women who were brave enough to come out – Linda Cox & Sharon Hanoa.
The new Greenie rule is now in effect. You no longer need to get par or better to win. You just need to be closest to the pin.
Congratulations to our tournament champion, Steve Kumagai! Playing to a 29 handicap, he shot 106 for a net 77 but did not enter any of the Net Scores. That, I believe, may be an OCAAGA record for the highest net score to win a tournament! He was followed very closely by Brian Ito & Scott Sato who both shot net 78. It was a very tough day. Everyone else shot net 81 or higher!
This month’s early bird winner is Dennis Kaake. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – Steve Kumagai (77)
Low Net Front – Scott Sato (37) – 33 points. Dennis Kaake (38) – 14 points.
Low Net Back – David Kato (39) – 33 points. Al Lum, William Au, & Scott Sato (41 tie) – 4 points each.
Low Net Total – Scott Sato (78) – 52 points. David Kato (81) – 22 points.
Low Gross – Jon Sasaki (82/guest) – 8 points
Long Drive (Men) – Sean Okutsu – 6 points
Long Drive (Women) – Linda Cox – 2 points. Linda had stiff competition – herself!
Low Putts – Jay Inouye (31) – 14 points. Jay also tied for first last month! Patrick Hanoa & Sean Okutsu (33 tie) – 3 points each. Patrick tied for first last month.
Greenies (4) – Art Fukumoto (#3), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#7), David Kato (#11), Sean Okutsu (#15) – 25 points each.
Skins (9) – Jon Sasaki, guest (#2 par & #14 birdie), Art Fukumoto (#4 birdie), Sean Okutsu (#6 & #7 birdies), James Chang (#10 birdie), Dennis Kaake (#13 birdie), Scott Sato (#17 par), William Au (#18 par) -- 28 points for each Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) – This year POY points will be based solely on tournament performance. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guests and new membership referrals will no longer be awarded.
James Chang is still our POY leader. He has held this position since March. Jay Inouye continues to play well and has now moved into the second spot ahead of Patrick Hanoa. Ron Kienast and Henry Hearn retained their fourth & fifth spots, respectively. David Kato has moved into sixth place.
Our new scoring system rewards players but only if they score tournament points. 100 points are awarded to the tournament champion. The next nine places receive reduced points w/ tenth place receiving ten points. If no points are received, their cumulative points will remain unchanged which is why there may be fewer position changes.
James Chang 280
Jay Inouye 218
Patrick Hanoa 192
Ron Kienast 153
Henry Hearn 145
David Kato 138
Footnotes of Distinction:
1. PCC Rated! Westridge had a 3+ PCC rating which meant that the Playing Conditions Calculation would be applied. This is done in the calculation of a score differential if the course or weather conditions on a day of play significantly impacted players performances. When you post your score, you’ll be able to see the impact of this.
2. Double Digit Inflation! How tough was this course? There were some pretty high scores: two 12’s, five 11’s, and three 10’s! Eight of these scores came on #14 & #18, which were both par fives.
3. Long Range Putting. Paul Onest was having an off day (ok, who wasn’t?). He managed to salvage it on hole #18 when he sank a 33’ one-putt to save a 7! Go Paul!
4. Tournament Limitations. Please remember that we are limiting our tournaments to 40 players and so it’s important that you register early if you want to assure yourself of a spot. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations will need to be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
Big money winner was Scott Sato. He won Low Net Front (33 points), tied second Low Net Back (4 points), won Low Net Total (52 points), and a Skin (28 points) for a total of 119 points. He was followed by Sean Okutsu w/ 90 points and David Kato w/ 80 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (23), M&M continued his dominance by winning by five Skins. M&M is up eighteen for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Los Verdes GC, Sunday, June 18th, 10:00. Deadline to register and pay is June 5th. Please note that in addition to the Skins game, we have added a Net Skins game which will allow our higher handicappers an equal opportunity to participate! If you’re really brave, you can enter both events!
It’s been quite a while since we last played at La Mirada. We had perfect golf weather w/ temps in the 70’s, clear skies and no wind. The course was short but the rough presented challenges as many of us had to spend time searching for our balls. Getting out of the rough was also difficult, especially for the high handicappers, due to the thickness and uneven lies. We had 32 players which included one guest.
Since there were six par threes, the first par three was eliminated from the Greenie contest. There was one rule change regarding Greenies. It will no longer require that you get par or better. This takes the pressure off of the high handicappers who may get struck w/ the three-putt blues.
Congratulations to our tournament champion, Jay Inouye. Playing to a 17 handicap, he shot an 82 for a net 65. He was followed by Patrick Hanoa who carded a net 66 and Henry Hearn who shot a net 67. Patrick also finished second in last month’s tournament.
This month’s early bird winner is Andy Sayakhot. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – Jay Inouye (65)
Low Net Front – Jay Inouye (32) – 50 points. Henry Hearn & Patrick Hanoa (33 tie) – 10 points each.
Low Net Back – Michael Ha (32) – 50 points. Jay Inouye & Patrick Hanoa (33 tie) – 10 points each.
Low Net Total – Jay Inouye (65) – 77 points. Patrick Hanoa (66) – 33 points.
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (77) – 10 points
Long Drive (Men) – Ron Kienast – 18 points (this included the 8 points from the Women’s Long Drive event).
Long Drive (Women) – No one qualified.
Low Putts – Jay Inouye, Patrick Hanoa, & Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (28 tie) – 8 points each.
Greenies (5) – Jay Inouye (#5 & 9), Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (#11), Andy Sayakhot (#13), Al Lum (#17) – 23 points each.
Skins (10) – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#1 par, birdies on #10, 17 & 18), Andy Sayakhot (#4 birdie), Scott Sato (#7 birdie), Michael Ha (#8 par, birdies on #11 & 16), James Chang (#14 birdie) -- 24 points for each Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) – This year POY points will be based solely on tournament performance. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guests and new membership referrals will no longer be awarded.
James Chang and Patrick Hanoa continue to play well and retained their top two spots, respectively. Jay Inouye jumped into the third position ahead of Ron Kienast w/ his win at La Mirada. Henry Hearn makes it to the top five. The top five spots have started to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. However, w/ the new scoring system based on performance only, there’s still plenty of time for anyone to make a move.

Footnotes of Distinction:
On Fire! Jay Inouye shot lights out. His 82 was one of his lowest scores ever. Everything he did, turned to gold. On one of his two Greenies, he mishit his shot but it ended up rolling all of the way onto the green. It must be the luck of the Irish!
2. Iron Assist. On hole #1, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa was chipping his shot onto the green. It went to the right and hit Susie Yanagita’s club that was lying on the green which redirected his ball towards the hole! Those golf lessons from Troy Grant must be paying off!
3. Almost an ACE! On hole #3, Sharon Hanoa’s ball ended up 11.5” from the hole! Unfortunately for Sharon, she did not get a Greenie because there were six par 3’s and they eliminated the first par three from the Greenie contest. She did, however, get her birdie!
4. Tree Wood. Al Lum was having an awful day. On hole #11, the 186 yard par 3, his drive hit the tree to his right. His second shot hit the same tree again sending it back into the greenside bunker on hole #10. The foursome on #10 were already on the green getting ready to putt. They were polite enough not to laugh! To top things off, he also took an 11(!) on #16.
5. See if You Can Top That! On hole #17, the 133 yard uphill blind par three. Al Lum & Mike “M&M” Miyasaki both hit good tee shots but couldn’t see where their balls had landed. When they got to the green, Ron Kienast’s name was on the CP sign but both Al & M&M ended up closer to the pin. This was the second time that Ron had been in contention for a Greenie and got edged out both times. Al ended up being one pace closer than M&M and won the Greenie w/ a par. Not to be outdone, M&M birdied it!
6. In Memory of Dad. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki’s dad loved playing golf. At age 75, he was a 10 handicapper. It was on hole #18 at La Mirada that he was getting ready to putt for a birdie and suffered a fatal heart attack! So what did M&M do? He birdied 18!
7. Tournament Limitations. Please remember that we are limiting our tournaments to 40 players and so it’s important that you register early if you want to get in. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations will need to be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
Big money winner was our tournament winner, Jay Inouye. He won Low Net Front (50 points), tied second Low Net Back (10 points), won Low Net Total (77 points), tied for low putts (8 points) and had two Greenies (46 points) for a total of 191 points. He was followed by Michael Ha w/ 122 points and Mike “M&M” Miyasaki w/ 114 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (4) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), M&M totally dominated Al by winning 12 Skins! M&M shot 77 to Al’s 113! It was not a good day for Al. M&M is up thirteen for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Westridge GC, Saturday, May 20th, at 9:00. Please note the earlier start time. Deadline to register and pay is May 7th.

Rio Hondo Golf Course Tournament Results
We were blessed w/ clear skies and pleasant weather for our second tournament of the 2023 season. This allowed for shorts attire and walking. We had 40 players which included four guests, Russell Ikeda (Mike Ikeda), Wendy Momii (Yukiko Masuoka), and Doug & Lu Tambara (Gil Ishizu). There were nine ladies that teed it up.
Congratulations to our tournament champion, James Chang. He carded a net 66. He was followed closely by “Dancing” Dee Ishida w/ a net 68. Both James & Dee joined as new members last year. James also tied for second in January’s tournament. This will put him at the top of the leader board for POY.
This month’s early bird winner is Linda Cox. She gets 20 points for having her name pulled and having her entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – James Chang (66)
Low Net Front – James Chang (32) – 60 points. Susie Yanagita (34) – 26 points.
Low Net Back – Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa, Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu & Jay Inouye (33 tie) – 28 points each.
Low Net Total – Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu (70) – 84 points. David Kato (71) – 36 points. James Chang & “Dancing” Dee Ishida would have scratched but neither entered!
Low Gross – Sean Okutsu (79) – 6 points
Long Drive (Men) – Sean Okutsu – 10 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Linda Cox – 12 points.
Low Putts – Sean Okutsu (31) – 16 points. Al Lum & Doug Tambara (32 tie) – 3 points each. Sean also won Low Putts at last month’s tournament w/ 29.
Greenies (5) – Ray Cox (#7), Michael Ha (#8), Alie Onest (#10), Sean Okutsu (#14), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#17) -- 26 points each. Sean & M&M also won Greenies at last month’s tournament and M&M’s was on #17!
Skins (5) – Sean Okutsu (#4 birdie & 18 par), Ray Cox (#7 birdie), David Kato (#8 birdie), Paul Onest (#15 birdie). 56 points for each Skin.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) On A Roll! James Chang has been on a roll since joining last year. He finished second in our October tournament, tied for second in last month’s tournament, and won this month’s tournament but failed to enter the Low Net Total! James – you’ve got to pay to play!
2) Pin Point Accuracy! There were several darts being thrown on the par 3’s. Ray Cox landed about 14” from the pin on #7. Ray’s name was also on another CP but he got edged out. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki hit the flag stick on #17 and ended up 3’ feet from the pin. However, he missed his birdie putt which would have also given him a Skin!
3) Women Rule! There were more women entering the Long Drive contest than the Men. Six of the nine women playing entered!
4) Pink is In! “Dancing” Dee Ishida playing w/ her new “pink” clubs was second Low Net w/ a 68! It’s got to be the color!
5) Father & Daughter are Us! It’s been a while since the father/daughter duo of Paul & Allie Onest have played in a tournament. How did they do? Allie got a Greenie & Paul got a Skin!
6) Mirroring “M&M”! Mike “M&M” Miyasaki had an off day. Playing to a 3 handicap, he shot an 87! Part of this was due to his getting an 8 on 15 and a 7 on 16, both triple bogies. In his Battle of the Titans w/ Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum, Al (playing to a 19) got the same scores on the same holes!
7) Tournament Limitations. Please remember that we are limiting our tournaments to 36 or 40 players and so it’s important that you register early if you want to get in. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations will need to be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
Big money winner was Sean Okutsu. He won Low Gross (6 points), Long Drive (10 points), Low Putts (16 points), a Greenie (26 points) and two Skins (112 points) for a total of 170 points. Talk about consistency, Sean scored 139 points last month in the same events w/ the exception of Low Gross! Long Drive (16 points), Low Putts (23 points), one Greenie (37 points) & one Skin (63 points).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1526 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (19), M&M was up one on the front nine but Al made a strong comeback on the back, winning six, and ended winning by five. Al is up five for the year.
Please remember to post your round. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: Brookside EO Nay#2 on Saturday, March 18th, at 10:00. Deadline to register and pay is March 6th. Don’t forget to sign up early as the tournaments fill up quickly.

Congratulations to our tournament co-champions, Dennis Kaake & Henry Hearn. They both carded net 64’s (thru 16 holes). James Chang, Gary Umetsu & Andy Sayakhot were one shot off w/ net 65’s. James Chang is one of our new members and he also tied for second in our October tournament.
This was our first tournament of the 2023 season and we had to cut off the entries at 40. Welcome to Steve Fukumoto and Jason Akiyama who played in their first OCAAGA tournament as new members. They were both recruited by Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman, our 2022 POY. We also had seven ladies teeing it up. Our first tee time was at 11:00 which meant that the last three foursomes were not able to finish due to darkness. As a result, we only used scores thru 16 holes to determine our winners. (The front nine was completed, and the last 2 holes were removed due to darkness and for scoring but full handicap was applied to the 7 holes on the back nine.
For handicap reporting purposes, please take net par on the last two holes (making 18) and then post your score.

Footnotes of Distinction:
Not too much to report this month as it was too dark to lie about anything!
1) The Dark Knights! It was so dark that groups nine & ten used glow balls to finish the last two holes. Talk about being prepared! Who brings glow balls to a tournament? Unfortunately, they still weren’t able to finish.
2) Mr. Putz! Craig “Mr. Putz” Ogawa put on a putting performance on the front nine. He had one zero putt, three one putts and a triple(!) on #9 for a total of 14. Too bad about the triple, “Mr. Putz”. Unfortunately, the back nine was not as favorable.
3) Tournament Limitations. Please remember that we are limiting our tournaments to 36 or 40 players and so it’s important that you register early if you want to get in. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations will need to be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
4) New Board Member. Thanks to Brian Ito, one of our newer members, for joining the Board. He has taken over the tournament scoring responsibilities.
Big money winner (again!) was Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He won Low Net Front (60 points), a Greenie (37 points) and two Skins (126 points) for a total of 223 points. Finishing a distant second and third were Brad Cooper (142 points) – Low Gross (16 points) & two Skins (126 points) and Sean Okutsu (139 points) – Long Drive (16 points), Low Putts (23 points), one Greenie (37 points) & one Skin (63 points).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 1256 points. This will be carried over into 2023 and will be increased based on the number of members.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (18), M&M was up four on the front nine but Al made up for it on the back and they ended up tied.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.

Costa Mesa Tournament Results
Congratulations to the tournament co-champion, William Au and Jon Suzuki! View the results.
Costa Mesa Tournament Summary
This was our last scheduled tournament before our End-of-Year tournament. This is also the same course that Ray “3-K” Saito scored an Ace on hole #11 last year in January to bag the Hole-in-One kitty for 3000 points. Men played from the Blues and women from the Silvers. We had to contend w/ punched greens which made putting a bit more challenging for some.
Congratulations to our tournament co-champions, Jon Suzuki & William Au. They both carded net 67’s! Jon shot a 99 (32 handicap) and William shot a 79 (12 handicap). New members Steve Kim & James Chang both tied for second w/ net 68’s. Steve shot an 81 (13 handicap) and James shot an 84 (16 handicap). This was Steve’s first OCAAGA tournament.
We had a record turnout of 48 golfers this month! This is by far the most golfers we’ve ever had playing in an OCAAGA tournament. Fortunately, Costa Mesa was able to accommodate all of us. This included new members Steve Kim (Ted Suekawa) and Ryan Matusuoka, Jason Matsuoka & Russell Tagawa (Art Fukumoto). Our only guests were Raedean Rona (Cookie Lelevier) and Shiela Fujimoto (Sandy Hanada). We have acquired fourteen new members this year which brings our total membership to 69. New members include Art Fukumoto, Peter Phan, Brian Ito, Kei Yoshino, James Chang (they all found us thru our website!), Henry Hearn and Paul Chung (Michael Ha), Dee Ishida & Steve Kim (Ted Suekawa), Ryan & Jason Matsuoka and Russell Tagawa (Art Fukumoto), Jason Akiyama & Steve Fukumoto (Will Haberman).
This month’s early bird winner is Scott Sato. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Co-Champions – Jon Suzuki & William Au, Net 67
Low Net Front – Steve Kim (32) – 69 points. Ron Kienast & William Au (34 tie) – 14 points each.
Low Net Back – Jon Suzuki (29!) – 69 points. Dennis Kaake (32) – 29 points.
Low Net Total – Jon Suzuki & William Au (67 tie) – 75 points each.
Low Gross – William Au (79) – 20 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki – 14 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Sandy Hanada – 12 points.
Low Putts – Michael “Mr. President” Ha & Duane “The Dominator” Tomono (29 tie) – 17 points each.
Greenies (4) – Art Fukumoto (#4), Russell Tagawa (#7), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#11), Dennis Kaake (#17) -- 48 points each.
Skins (5 birdies) – Brad Cooper (#1), Ron Kienast (#2), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#5), Russell Tagawa (#9), Kevin Lee (#14). 84 points per Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) standings (prior to Costa Mesa):
1) Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman – 332 points
2) Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa – 310 points
3) Michael “Mr. President” Ha – 260 points
4) Jay Inouye – 241 points
5) Dennis Kaake – 235 points
Congratulations to Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman for winning Player of the Year! He finished strong w/ a net 71 which kept him ahead of Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa. Ted had held the lead for POY since May and added another 25 bonus points w/ his recent recruitment of new member Steve Kim. However, Will bypassed him w/ his late recruitment of new members Jason Akimoto and Steve Fukumoto which gave him 50 bonus points to put him 22 points ahead of Ted. Other position changes: Michael “Mr. President” Ha moved up to the third spot; Jay Inouye broke into the top five for the first time; Dennis Kaake returned to the top five.
New rules: Beginning in 2023, POY points will be based solely on tournament performance. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guests and new membership referrals will no longer be awarded.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Birdie Buddies! Brad Cooper & Ron Kienast were playing together in the first group. Brad birdied hole #1 and Ron birdied hole #2 which also earned both of them a Skin!
2) Putter Magic! On hole #9, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa, putt(!) his third shot from off the green. His ball “bounced” across the green and into the hole for a birdie!
3) Going to School. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki was trying to get a read on the green and watched Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa chip his ball three(!) times across the green. M&M – did that help? Ted – you should have used your putter!
4) Chipper Twins! On hole #14, the par five, dog leg left w/ water on the left, Paul Onest put his drive in the water! His next two shots left him short of the green to the left. He chipped in his fifth shot to make par! On hole #18, another par five, Dennis Kaake repeated what Paul did by chipping in his fifth shot to make par! Dennis must have taken good notes because he and Paul were playing in the same foursome!
5) Bipolar Greenie! Craig Ogawa used his driver(!) on hole #17, the 181 yard par three, and ended up two feet closer to the pin than Dennis Kaake for the Greenie. That was his high. He then proceeded to three-putt the green which negated his Greenie! That was his low. Dennis was very grateful. Craig – you should have putt w/ your driver!
6) Three-putt blues! On the Par 5 18th, Michael “Mr. President” Ha had to draw his 2nd shot from 248 yds around a tree and somehow it landed on the green. He had a 30’ eagle putt but ended up three-putting. A two-putt would have gotten him a Skin, solo on Low Putts, and a tie for Low Gross with William Au. The missed 3’ birdie putt only cost him 114 points!
7) He must be human! This is the first time in the last five tournaments that Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman did not finish in first or second! However, he did shoot a net 71 which sealed POY honors for him.
8) Tournament Limitations. Starting next year, we will be limiting our tournaments to 36 or 40 players. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations will need to be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
9) Board has a new Board Member. Thanks to Brian Ito, one of our new members, for joining the Board. He will be taking over the tournament scoring in 2023.
Big money winner was Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He won a Skin (84 points), a Greenie (48 points) and Long Drive (14 points) for a total of 146 points. Just behind him w/ 144 points was co-champion Jon Suzuki. He tied for Low Net Total (75 points) and won Low Net Back (69 points).
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 916 points. This will be carried over into 2023 and will be increased based on the number of members.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), M&M continued his dominance over Al by winning by five. M&M ended 18 up for the year!
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT as a “Tournament”.
Next up: End-of-Year (EOY) tournament and banquet will be held on Saturday, November 12th, at Mile Square. We anticipate a large turn-out. Registration, rules and raffle prize donation forms have been posted to the website. Deadline to register and pay is this Saturday, 10/29.

Lakewood Tournament Results
Congratulations to the tournament champion, Craig Ogawa! View the results.
Lakewood Tournament Summary
Congratulations to our tournament champion, Craig Ogawa. Playing to a 24 handicap, he shot a 90 for a net 66! Great shooting, Craig! Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman and Jay Inouye both tied for second w/ a net 67. Will shot an 87 w/ a 20 handicap and Jay shot an 85 w/ an 18 handicap. In the last four tournaments Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman has finished first twice and second twice!
This month we had 37 golfers (we managed to squeeze in one more over our max of 36). This is the fifth month in a row that we have maxed out. With only one more regular tournament scheduled (Costa Mesa on October 22nd), be sure to get your registration in early or you may not make the cut! Due to us maxing out, only two guests were allowed to play. They were returning guests Wendy Momii (Yukiko Masuoka) and Russ Ikeda (Mike Ikeda). We have acquired eleven new members this year which brings our total membership to 65. New members include Art Fukumoto, Peter Phan, Brian Ito, Kei Yoshino, James Chang (they all found us thru our website!), Henry Hearn and Paul Chung (Michael Ha), Dee Ishida & Steve Kim (Ted Suekawa), and Ryan & Jason Matsuoka (Art Fukumoto).

Player of the Year (POY) standings:
1) Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa – 310 points
2) Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman – 282 points
3) Michael “Mr. President” Ha – 260 points
4) Jay Inouye – 241 points
5) Dennis Kaake – 235 points
Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa has held the lead for POY since May and w/ his recent recruitment of new member Steve Kim, he increases his lead over Will “Mr. Tournament” Haberman by 28 points. Other position changes: Michael “Mr. President” Ha has moved up to the third spot; Jay Inouye has broken into the top five for the first time; Dennis Kaake has returned to the top five. The top three finishers at each tournament also receive bonus points and so it’s still anyone’s race to win. Our last tournament in October at Costa Mesa will determine the final outcome.
New rules: POY bonus points (25) for new membership referrals for 2022 will extend to October 22nd. Beginning in 2023, POY points will be based solely on tournament performance. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guest and new membership referrals will no longer be awarded.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Welcome back, strangers! Gary & Marlene Ching played in their first tournament in more than two years!
2) A matter of inches! On hole #3, the par three, Michael Ha stuck his ball just 5’ to the left of the pin. His friend and new member, Paul Chung, stuck his ball to the right of the pin, 2” closer than Michael! Paul won the Greenie and also ended up shooting a 98, his best score ever! Paul still does not have a handicap.
3) Bunker Putter. Duane “The Dominator” Tomono used his putter(!) to get out of the bunker on hole #4 and his ball ended up 6” from the pin! On another green, he was lining up his putt, but then realized that he had forgotten his putter! Did you leave it in the sand, Duane?
4) It must be magic! On hole #5, the 192 yard par three, Ron Kienast’s ball literally fell off the tee on his downswing but he still managed to hit his ball onto the green! And he parred the hole!
5) 4x1 Foot! The foursome of Paul Onest, Allie Onest, Scott Sato and Dennis Kaake, all missed one foot putts!
6) Tournament Man. Will Haberman continues to excel in tournament play. In the last four tournaments he placed second (Lakewood CC & Rancho San Joaquin), tied for first (Recreation Park) and was tournament champion (Los Verdes).
7) Tournament Limitations. Our tournaments fill up quickly so be sure to register early. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations must be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
8) Board seeking Board Member. The Board is looking for one new Board member to do the tournament scoring. If you are comfortable w/ Excel, you should consider volunteering. Many special perks if you can handle it!
Big money winner was Scott Sato. He won three Skins (192 points), Low Gross (12 points) and tied Low Putts (15 points) for a total of 219 points. He was followed by tournament champion Craig Ogawa who earned 151 points. He won Low Net Back (60 points) and Low Net Total (91 points).
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 871 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (19), M&M did not play. M&M remains up 13 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Costa Mesa GC, Saturday, October 22nd, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – October 8th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments fill up quickly. This will be our last regular tournament of the year. The End-of-the-Year tournament and banquet will be held on Saturday, November 12th, at Mile Square.

Rancho San Joaquin Tournament Results
Congratulations to the tournament champion, Kevin Lee! View the results.
Rancho San Joaquin Tournament Summary
Congratulations to our tournament champion, Kevin Lee. He was playing to a 9 handicap and shot a 78 for a net 69. Great shooting, Kevin! Will Haberman who was our last two month’s tournament champion was second w/ a 70.
Men played from the Gold (back) tees and women from the White (front) tees. The weather was nice except the wind made club selection challenging.
We maxed out w/ 36 golfers for the fourth month in a row. This included guests Steve Kim (Ted Suekawa), Russell Tagawa (Art Fukumoto), Rae Rona (Ray Cox), and Mark Johnson (Al Lum). Art Fukumoto also just recruited father and son Ryan and Jason Matsuoka as new members. Art will get 50 bonus points towards POY for recruiting them. We have acquired ten new members this year which brings our total membership to 65. New members include Art Fukumoto, Peter Phan, Brian Ito, Kei Yoshino, James Chang (they all found us thru our website!), Henry Hearn and Paul Chung (Michael Ha), Dee Ishida (Ted Suekawa), and Ryan & Jason Matsuoka (Art Fukumoto). Ted was finally able to get Dee to join after being a regular guest for numerous outings.
This month’s early bird winner is new member Henry Hearn. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Kevin Lee, Net 69
Low Net Front -- Scott Sato (33) – 52 points. Dennis Kaake, Duane Tomono & Kevin Lee (35 tie) – 7 points each.
Low Net Back – Jon Suzuki (30!) – 52 points. Will Haberman (32) – 22 points.
Low Net Total – Kevin Lee (69) – 80 points. Will Haberman (70) – 34 points. Will also tied or won Low Net Total the prior two months.
Low Gross – Brad Cooper & Russell Tagawa, guest (76 tie) – 8 points each. Brad also won Low Gross last month w/ a 76.
Long Drive (Men) – Russell Tagawa (guest) – 12 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Allie Onest – 6 points.
Low Putts – Jay Inouye (28) – 21 points. Brad Cooper, Michael Ha & Al Lum (29 tie) – 3 points each.
Greenies (4) – Scott Sato (#2), Russell Tagawa, guest (#8), Brad Cooper (#13), Mike Miyasaki (#15) -- 35 points each.
Skins (7) – All birdies! Scott Sato (#2), Kevin Lee (#3), Russell Tagawa, guest (#8 & 10), Mike Miyasaki (#14 &18), Brad Cooper (#12). 51 points per Skin. Kevin and Brad also won Skins last month.
Player of the Year (POY) standings will be posted to the website.
Current standings (prior to Rancho San Joaquin):
1) Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa – 228 points
2) Michael “Mr. President” Ha – 202 points
3) Ray Cox – 182 points
4) Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu – 179 points
5) Dennis Kaake – 177 points
There was a major shake-up in the standings since Michael “Mr. President” Ha jumped into second w/ his 50 bonus points for recruiting new members Henry Hearn and Paul Chung. However, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa kept one dance step ahead of him by recruiting “Dancing” Dee Ishida. Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu, our 2021 POY, made it into the top five.
New rules: POY bonus points for new membership referrals for 2022 (25 points for each new member) will be extended from the current June 30, 2022 to October 22, 2022 and will only count for the 2022 POY results. No more carryovers to the next calendar year. Beginning in 2023, POY race will be based solely on tournament performance points only. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guest and new membership referral points will no longer be awarded.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Motor Boat Putting (putt, putt, putt, putt, putt). How do you five-putt a green? On hole # 11, the short 388 par four, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki, was putting for par from 20 feet away. He ended up 4 feet past the pin. His return putt ended up just past the pin. His next putt rimmed the hole and spun out. He casually tapped his fourth putt but that also rimmed out almost hitting his foot! Lucky that his ball missed his foot otherwise it would have been a two stroke penalty! His fifth putt finally went in for an eight! Just to prove that this was not an accident, he also four-putt one of the par threes on back nine! “M&M’s” new putter (and very expensive one) is working very, very well!
2) Tournament Man. Will Haberman must love tournaments! In the last three tournaments he placed second (Rancho San Joaquin), tied for first (Recreation Park) and was tournament champion (Los Verdes). After winning at Los Verdes, he finally realized that you need to enter the Low Nets in order to win points!
3) Traveling Men. Back in 1969 there was a commercial ad for Camel’s cigarettes: “I’d walk a mile for a Camel”. We have two such members that drive a very long way just to play in an OCAAGA golf tournament. Both Kevin Lee & Jay Inouye make the monthly trek from San Diego County!
4) Who is that masked man, Kimo Sabe? Art Fukumoto invited Russel Tagawa to play as his guest. How good is he? He scored points in five Optionals and had the most total points won!
5) Tournament Limitations. The Board has made the decision to limit all future tournaments to 36 players. Our tournaments fill up quickly so be sure to register early. Priority will be given to members who register by the deadline and guests will be allowed if space is available. All registrations must be done by mail and email registrations will no longer be accepted.
6) Board seeking Board. The Board is looking for two new Board members. Sharon Hanoa, our webmaster, has officially retired and plans to do more traveling w/ husband Pat. We are also looking for someone who is proficient w/ computers to record our tournament scores and POY standings. Many special perks if you volunteer!
Big money winner was Art Fukumoto’s guest, Russell Tagawa. He won two Skins (102 points), a Greenie (35 points), Low Gross (8 points) and Long Drive (12 points) for a total of 157 points. He was followed by tournament champion Kevin Lee w/ 138 points. He tied for second Low Net Front (7 points), won Low Net Total (80 points), and won a Skin (51 points). He was followed very closely by Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He won two Skins (102 points) and a Greenie (35 points) for a total of 137 points. Special footnote: Kevin Lee was recruited by “M&M”!
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 871 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (3) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), “M&M” struggled on the front nine but rallied strong on the last few holes to lose one to Lum. M&M remains up 13 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Lakewood Country Club, Sunday, September 18th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – September 4th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments fill up quickly.

Rec Park Tournament Results
Congratulations to co-tournament champions, Will Haberman & Jay Inouye! View the results and scorecard.
Rec Park Tournament Summary
Congratulations to co-tournament champions, Will Haberman & Jay Inouye. They both shot a net 70. Will was playing to a 22 handicap and Jay a 17. Will was also last month’s tournament champion.
For the first time in quite a while, the men played from the Blue tees. Play was a bit slow. Even though our rules Chairperson, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki, had posted ways to speed up play, it took the last group five hours to finish the round due to slow play in some of the foursomes.
For the third month in a row we maxed out w/ 36 golfers which included new members Henry Hearn (Michael Ha) and repeat guests Raedean Rona (Ray Cox), Wendy Momii (Yukiko Masuoka) and Dee Ishida (Ted Suekawa). We have acquired seven new members this year which brings our total membership up to 62. New members include Art Fukumoto, Peter Phan, Brian Ito, Kei Yoshino, James Chang (they all found us thru our website!) and Henry Hearn and Paul Chung (Michael Ha). Art Fukumoto is a former member and returned after an 18 year hiatus! Henry Hearn was Michael Ha’s college roommate at UCLA and he played as his guest at Los Serranos earlier this year. Paul Chung was Michael Ha’s former boss and has played w/ us before. Not only is Michael Ha the top guest recruiter w/ six(!), he is also the top new member recruiter (w/ two!). Technically you could say our website is our top new member recruiter w/ five!
This month’s early bird winner is Jon Suzuki. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Will Haberman & Jay Inouye – Net 70
Low Net Front – Will Haberman (34) – 54 points. Jay Inouye (35) – 23 points
Low Net Back – Scott Sato (34) – 54 points. Jay Inouye (35) – 23 points.
Low Net Total – Will Haberman & Jay Inouye (70 tie) – 60 points each. Will would have also won Low Net Total last month w/ a 65 but didn’t enter! Looks like he learned his lesson.
Low Gross – Brad Cooper (76) – 18 points. Scott Sato (78) – no points.
Long Drive (Men) – Brad Cooper (estimated at 310 yds!) – 16 points. The next closest was a “rest stop” away.
Long Drive (Women) – Sandy Hanada – 6 points.
Low Putts – Ron Kienast & Scott Sato (28 tie) – 17 points each. Brad Cooper (29) – no points. There would have been a three-way tie but Brad three-putted the 18th green!
Greenies (3) – Ted Suekawa (#5), Ron Kienast (#12), Kevin Lee (#16) -- 43 points each. See Footnotes of Distinction for explanation of Ted’s Greenie.
Skins (5) – Brad Cooper (par on #6; birdie on #8), Art Fukumoto (birdie on #9), Kevin Lee (birdies on #15 &18). 64 points per Skin. This is the third month in a row that Art has won a Skin. Welcome back Art!
Player of the Year (POY) standings will be posted to the website.
Current standings (prior to Recreation Park):
1) Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa – 180 points
2) Taylor “The Kid” Sanchez – 164 points
3) Ray Cox & Eugene Kaneshiro – 151 points (tie)
4) Dennis Kaake – 149 points
There should be a major shake-up in the standings since Michael “Mr. President” Ha is getting 50 bonus points for recruiting two new members.
1) Three-peat! For the third month in a row, we had 36 golfers playing. Our largest turnout was last year when we had 40!
2) Working the System! Michael “Mr. President” Ha really knows how to work the POY scoring system. He has had six guests (30 points) and just added two new members, Henry Hearn and Paul Chung (25 points each). The 50 new member bonus points will propel him into one of the top POY contenders!
3) It’s Golden! A huge congratulations goes out to Ray & Linda Cox who will be celebrating 50 years of marital bliss! The family that golfs together, stays together!
4) All in the Family! Dennis Kaake & Ray Cox are both in the running for POY. Ray is married to Linda and Dennis is married to Linda’s sister, Joyce! The Takao sisters must have something to do w/ their husbands’ prowess on the golf course
5) Long Term Relationships or It’s a Small World. Ray & Linda Cox will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on August 19th! Michael Ha & Henry Hearn were roommates at UCLA 25 years ago! Duane “The Dominator” Tomono & Linda Cox – Linda found out they both went to Narbonne High School in Harbor City, although not at the same time, when she and Ray originally joined OCAAGA.
6) Greenie Magic! Ted Suekawa won a Greenie on hole #5, the par three,106 yard down-hill hole. His tee shot went into the front bunker and bounced(!) out onto the green a couple of feet from the pin! He must have been very nervous because he almost three-putted! Those bunker lessons must be paying off!
7) Clairvoyant Putting. Scott Sato was having a good putting day. He had 14 putts on the front and when he got to hole #18, he was told that he had 14 putts on the back. He verbally announced that his plan was to sink his ball from off the green so he would end up w/ 28 putts. And that’s exactly what he did! He putt it in from just off the fringe for his par. This allowed him to tie Ron Kienast for Low Putts. Brad Cooper, who was playing w/ Ron, would have made it a three-way tie but ended up three-putting #18.
Big money winner was Kevin Lee. He won two Skins (128 points) and a Greenie (43 points) for a total of 171 points. He was closely followed by Brad Cooper who won two Skins (128 points), Long Drive (16 points) and Low Gross for a total of 162 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 871 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (19), “M&M” did not play (again!) and had to cancel last month due to testing positive for COVID. M&M remains up 14 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Rancho San Joaquin (Irvine), Saturday, August 20th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – August 6th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments tend to fill up quickly.

Los Verdes Tournament Results
Congratulations to the Los Verdes Tournament Champion William Haberman! View the results and scorecard.
The Player of the Year standings have also been updated.
Los Verdes Tournament Summary
Congratulations to tournament champion, Will Haberman. Playing to a 22 handicap, he shot an 87 for a net 65! Will was also the only one to break net par. Great shooting, Will!
We had another great day of golf w/ clear skies and beautiful weather. Los Verdes plays as a par 71 for the men and 72 for the ladies. It was another extended day of golf as most of us took 5 to 5 ½ hours to finish.
We were maxed out for the second month in a row w/ a full complement of 36 golfers which included new member James Chang (playing in his first OCAAGA tournament) and six guests: Jon Sasaki (Mike Miyasaki), Wendy Momii (Yukiko Masuoka), Paul Chung, Jake Choi & Sue Im (Michael Ha), and last minute fill-in, Dee Ishida (Ted Suekawa). This is Jon’s second consecutive time playing w/ us and Dee’s third time playing as a guest. If they keep this up, they’ll have to join as members! Unfortunately, Jon’s sponsor, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki tested positive for COVID and had to cancel at the last minute. Wishing you a speedy recovery, “M&M”! Michael Ha continues to be our top guest recruiter. If the name Yukiko Masuoka doesn’t sound familiar, it’s most likely because she usually only plays w/ us once a year at Los Verdes! Thanks for inviting Wendy Momii. Wendy’s husband, Scott Momii, joined us for a beer afterwards. In case you didn’t know, Scott was one of our original founding members!
This month’s early bird winner is Dennis Kaake. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline. Or as they say, he had his “cake” and ate it too.

Low Net Total – Al Lum & Patrick Hanoa (71 tie) – 52 points each. Gary Umetsu & Ray “3-K” Saito (73 tie) – no points. Will Haberman would have won w/ a Net 65 but did not enter! Al & Patrick are forever grateful!

Player of the Year (POY) standings will be posted separately. New rules: POY bonus points for new membership referrals for 2022 (25 points for each new member) will be extended from the current June 30, 2022 to October 22, 2022 and will only count for the 2022 POY results. No more carryovers to the next calendar year. Beginning in 2023, POY race will be based solely on tournament performance points period. All bonus points for attendance, point system, guest and new membership referral points will no longer be awarded.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Hitting the Blocks. On hole #3, the 167 yard par three, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa hit a low line drive (yeah, it was very, very, very low) that struck one of the women’s red tee markers, ripping it out of the ground. His ball ricocheted past his head and landed behind him below the blue tee markers on a down slope! He still managed to get a five after starting w/ negative distance. Good recovery, Mr. Salsa! Just like when you slip on the dance floor!
2) Mr. Sandman. Joey Dang was having a decent round and had just birdied hole #11. One of his playing partners challenged him to get another birdie on hole #12, the 138 yard par 3. His first shot landed in the bunker. Joey said he needed more practice in the sand and so he took 11(!) more shots to get out! He posted a 15! Don’t you think that Joey “Mr. Sandman” Dang has a nice ring to it?
3) Mrs. Sandman. On hole #17, the 190 yard par three, Linda Cox’s second shot ended up in the green side bunker. It only took her five shots to get out after Duane “ the Dominator” Tomono finally told her to hit it out sideways (that’s what he had to do!). She ended up carding a 10. The good news is that she only had a one putt!
4) Three for Three. Did you notice that the first three Footnotes of Distinction occurred on three different par threes?
5) Two for Two. The last two tournament winners did NOT enter Low Net Total! Show me the money!!!
Big money winner was Jake Choi (Michael Ha’s guest). He won two Skins for 180 points. Patrick Hanoa was second. He was second Low Net Back (7 points), tied for Low Net Total (52 points), second Low Putts (7 points), and had one Skin (90 points) for a total of 156 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty remains at 826 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), “M&M” had to cancel due to testing positive for COVID. I think he may have known that Al was going to, finally, have a decent round. M&M remains up 14 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Recreation Park (Long Beach), Saturday, July 16th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – July 3rd. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments tend to fill up quickly.

Los Serranos Tournament Results
Congratulations to the Los Serranos Tournament Champion Taylor Sanchez! View the results.
Scorecard and results can also be viewed on the Tournaments page.
Los Serranos Tournament Summary
Congratulations to tournament champion, Taylor Sanchez. Playing to an 18 handicap, he shot an 83 for a net 65!
This is the first time that the club has ever played Los Serranos. We played the South Course which is a 6,743 yard, par 74, from the Whites. The woman played from the forward tees which logged in at 6,082 yards. So a long course meant it was a long day of golf. The weather remained clear throughout the day but the wind did kick up a bit in the afternoon.
We had 27 golfers which included two guests: Henry Hearn (Michael Ha) and Jon Sasaki (Mike Miyasaki).
This month’s early bird winner is Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Taylor Sanchez – Net 65
Low Net Front – Susie Yanagita (33) -- 35 points. Scott Sato (35) – 15 points.
Low Net Back – Eugene Kaneshiro (30!) – 35 points. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (34) – 15 points.
Low Net Total – Susie Yanagita (71) – 52 points. Jay Inouye (73) – 22 point. Taylor Sanchez would have won w/ a Net 65 but did not enter!
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki & Jon Sasaki, Mike’s guest (78 tie) – 4 points each.
Long Drive (Men) – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki – 6 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Linda Cox – 4 points.
Low Putts – Ron Kienast (27) – 14 points. Michael “M&M” Miyasaki, Michael Ha & Scott Sato (32 tie) – 2 points each.
Greenies (4) – Ron Kienast (#6), Paul Onest (#9), Alie Onest (#12), Taylor Sanchez (#17). 26 points each.
Skins (6) – Scott Sato (birdie on #1), Frank Doi (par on #5), John Sasaki, guest (birdie on #7), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (birdies on #10 & 15), Art Fukumoto (birdie on #14). 43 points per Skin.
1) Score Check! Ray Cox was keeping score for his foursome. He realized that he was keeping score for the North Course and not the South Course. Mike Miyasaki told him to just keep score on the North Course and they could get the correct score card at the turn. When Ray went into the starter to get the correct score card, they told him to flip the score card over to the South Course! Don’t feel bad, Ray, Paul Onest did the same thing on the first three holes until Al Lum told him to flip over the score card!
2) Ladies Rule! On #12, the 156 yard par 3, Alie Onest’s shot ended up just 2’ left off the pin! Not to be outdone, Linda Cox hit her drive to the left of the green, bounced it off the mound and rolled it toward the pin and ended up 3” closer than Alie’s shot. Fortunately for Alie, Linda didn’t enter Greenies and so Alie won the Greenie. She would have also won a Skin w/ her birdie but Mike “M&M” Miyasaki also birdie the hole!
3) Like Father, like Daughter! Paul Onest got a Greenie on #9 and Alie Onest followed up w/ a Greenie on #12.
4) Laser Accuracy! On #17, the 173 yard par 3, Taylor Sanchez left his ball 15” to the right of the pin. This was not a fluke as Taylor is usually in the Greenie hunt. As a side note, Greenies is the only optional that Taylor entered!
5) Skip to my Lou! Susie Yanagita’s approach shot over water to the green on #18, skipped several times on the water, made it across the bank on the other side, but unfortunately rolled back into the water! Even Scott Sato’s chanting of “skip, skip, skip” was not enough to keep it dry. Scotty apparently needed to add a few more “skips” to his chanting.
Big point winner was Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He was second Low Net Back, (15 points), tied Low Gross (4 points), won Long Drive (6 points), tied second Low Putts (2 points), won two Skins (86 points) for a total of 113 points. Second was Susie Yanagita. She won Low Net Front (35 points) & Low Net Total (52 points) for a total of 87 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 826 points.
In the Battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (22), “M&M” continued his domination. He ended up four up and is up 14 for the year. If this trend continues, Al will need an Angel investor.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Los Verdes (Rancho Palos Verdes), Sunday, June 19th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – June 5th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments fill up quickly.

Congratulations to the Rio Hondo Tournament Champion Gary Umetsu! View the results.
Past results have also been uploaded to the Tournaments page.
Rio Hondo Tournament Summary
Congratulations to tournament champion, and our 2021 POY, Gary Umetsu. Playing to a 14 handicap, he shot a 77 for a net 63!!!
The day started overcast and a little chili but warmed up for a beautiful day of golf. Putting was a challenge as the greens had been punched two weeks ago and were slow and bumpy.
We had 36 golfers which included three guests: Charles Laine (Al Lum), Phil Choi (Danney Kim), Craig Tyau (Sandy Hanada). This was our largest turn out of the year (we had 40 last year in June at Mile Square and had two tiers).
This was new member Brian Ito’s first tournament. He just relocated from Washington and was wearing his UW purple and gold attire. Also playing was Art Fukumoto who recently returned as an OCAAGA member after an 18 year hiatus!
This month’s early bird winner is Ray “3K” Saito. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Gary Umetsu – Net 63!
Low Net Front – Gary Umetsu (32) -- 52 points. Dennis Kaake (33) – 22 points.
Low Net Back – Ted Suekawa (30!) – 52 points. Gary Umetsu (31) – 22 points.
Low Net Total – Gary Umetsu (63!) – 80 points. Dennis Kaake (67) – 34 points.
Low Gross – Brad Cooper & Chuck Laine, guest (76 tie) – 9 points each.
Long Drive (Men) – Brad Cooper – 16 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Sharon Hanoa – 4 points.
Low Putts – Phil Choi, guest (27) – 25 points. Michael Ha & Duane Tomono (29 tie) – 5 points each. This was the second month in a row that a guest won Low Putts!
Greenies (5) – Ray Cox (#7), Michael Ha (#8), Mike Miyasaki (#10), Scott Sato (#14), Eugene Kaneshiro (#17). 27 points each. Michael Ha and Eugene Kaneshiro also won Greenies last month.
Skins (3) – Michael Ha (birdie on #8), Ron Kienast (birdie on #13), Brad Cooper (Eagle! on #15). 133(!) points for each Skin. Michael Ha also won a Skin last month. This is the most we have ever paid out on a Skin
Player of the Year (POY) standings are still on hold. We hope to have this out by next month. Starting in July, 2021, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member are being applied to this year’s POY contest. New member bonus points for this year will extend thru the end of June.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Guest what? Two of our guests were in the money: Phil Choi (Low Putts) & Chuck Laine (tied Low Gross)
2) Green w/ Envy! Everyone complained about the slow and bumpy greens except for Phil Choi, guest (27 putts!) and Michael Ha & Duane Tomono (29 putts).
3) Big Balls! Talk about having big balls, Brad Cooper won Long Drive w/ a 318 yard blast just edging out Michael Ha by two yards!
4) Where Eagles Soar! Brad Cooper won long drive on the par 5, 15th. He had a wedge into the green and one putted for an eagle! He also won one of the 3 skins for the day on this hole for 133 points!
5) Reversal of Fortune! Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa shot a net 72. 42 net front (he had a 10 on #2 w/o any penalties!) and a 30(!) net back. We might have to change his name to the Come-BACK Kid!
6) Team Chuckle (Chuck-Al)! Since Al Lum couldn’t play, he decided to enter his guest, Chuck Laine, in Skins, Greenies and Low Gross w/o him knowing. Al’s plan was to split any winnings w/ Chuck. I guess the laugh/chuckle was on Al as Chuck only tied for Low Gross.
Big money winner for the second month in a row was our President, Michael Ha. He tied second Low Putts (5 points), one Greenie (27 points) and one Skin (133 points) for a total of 165 points. Second was Brad Cooper. He won Long Drive (16 points), tied for Low Gross (9 points) and one Skin (133 points) for a total of 158 points. He was followed very closely by our tournament champion, Gary Umetsu. He won Low Net Front (52 points), second Low Net Back (22 points) and Low Net Total (80 points) for a total of 154 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 826 points
There was no battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress) this month, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum, as Al was out w/ a severely strained quad. M&M remains up 10 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Los Serranos (Chino Hills), Saturday, May 21st, 10:00 am. We will be playing the longer South Course. It’s a Par 74, 6743 yards from the Whites. Deadline to register – May 7th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments fill up quickly.

Brookside Tournament Results
Congratulations to the Brookside Tournament Champion Susie Yanagita!
Results, scorecard and POY will be added as soon as possible.
Brookside Tournament Summary
Congratulations to tournament champion, Susie Yanagita. On what was a very tough playing course, she had the best net score of 72!
Brookside played tough for most of us due to the wind and difficult greens (they were hard to read and judge as evidenced by the high number of putts for those of us in Low Putts). For the second month in a row, we had 32 players which included new member Peter Phan, playing w/ us for the first time, and five guests: Russell Okutsu & Nick Sekiya (Sean Okutsu), Isaac Parrish (Joey Dang), Rae Rona (Ray Cox), and Ed Chung (Michael Ha).
I want to welcome new members Brian Ito & K. Makota Yoshino. They both found us on our website. We are at now at 59 members.
This month’s early bird winner is Mike Yee. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Susie Yanagita – Net 72.
Low Net Front – Mike Yee & Michael Ha (36 tie) – 30 points each.
Low Net Back – Susie Yanagita (34) – 42 points. Ray Cox (35) – 18 points.
Low Net Total – Susie Yanagita (72) – 73 points. Scott Sato (74) – 31 points.
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki & Scott Sato (83 tie) – 8 points each.
Long Drive (Men) – Russell Okutsu – 20 points. Please refer to Footnotes of Distinction.
Long Drive (Women) – Allie Onest – 2 points. Allie blew away the competition (she was the only entrant!).
Low Putts – Ed Chung (32) – 22 points. Michael Ha (33) – 9 points. Interesting point -- Ed was Michael Ha’s guest!
Greenies (3) – Michael Ha (#4), Ron Kienast (#8), Eugene Kaneshiro (#17) -- 45 points for each Greenie.
Skins (6) – Michael Ha (birdie on #2), Will Haberman (birdie on #5), Mike Miyasaki (par on #12), Scott Sato (birdie on #14), Sean Okutsu (par on #16), Dennis Kaake (birdie on #17). 60 points for each Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) standings are currently on hold. Starting in July, 2021, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member are being applied to this year’s POY contest. New member bonus points for this year will extend thru the end of June.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Déjà vu Skins! Michael Ha won a Skin on hole #2. He also won a Skin on hole #2 at last month’s tournament. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki won a Skin on hole #12. He also won a Skin on hole #12 at last month’s tournament. Pretty spooky if you ask me.
2) He has no balls! Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu lost so many golf balls on the course that he had to finish using a range ball!
3) He feels chipper! On hole #7, the 376 yard par 4, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa chipped his ball into the hole for a … bogie! Good save “Mr. Salsa”! Almost as good as your moves on the dance floor.
4) Bombs Away! On hole #12, the 434 yard par 4 Long Drive hole, Russell Okutsu (Sean Okutsu’s guest) hit a massive shot that was at least 300 yards. With all the wind we were having, everyone was scratching their head as to how he could have pulled this off!
5) Redundancy! Ray Cox invited Rae Rona to play as a guest. In the future they will be referred to as Ray-Rae. The Flintstones had Bam Bam; we have Ray-Rae.
Big money winner this month was Michael Ha. He tied Low Net Front (30 points), second Low Putts (9 points), one Greenie (45 points) and one Skin (60 points) for a total of 144 points. Second was our tournament champion, Susie Yanagita. She won Low Net Back (42 points) and Low Net Total (73 points) for a total of 115 points.
The Hole-in-One kitty is at 826 points.
In the battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (2 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), Al started out weak on the front nine w/ a 51 but still managed to go one up on M&M. On the back nine, Al finished extremely weak w/ a 57 (he had a quint, two quads, a triple and one birdie!) and M&M ended up netting five Skins for the second month in a row. M&M is up 10 for the year. Al is looking for an Angel investor to back him. Any takers?
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Rio Hondo (Downey), Saturday, April 16th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – April 2nd. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments tend to fill up quickly.

Sierra Lakes Tournament Results
Congratulations to the Sierra Lakes Tournament Champion Ted Suekawa!
Results, scorecard and POY will be added as soon as possible.
Sierra Lakes Tournament Summary
Congratulations to tournament champion, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa. He shot a net 68!
We had 32 players which included five guests: Raedean Rona (Cookie Lelevier), Sheila Fujimoto, Guy Nakamura & Darrin Tanisaka (Sandy Hanada), and Phil Choi (Danney Kim). We actually had four more who wanted to play but Sierra Lakes capped us at 32.
We want to welcome Peter Phan as a new member. He found us on our website and his first outing will probably be at our March tournament at Brookside. Our other two new members this year are Art Fukumoto and Gary Sanders, who also found us on the website. Art Fukumoto returned as a new member after a 17 year hiatus from OCAAGA. Welcome back Art! Where have you been hiding?
This month’s early bird winner is tournament champion, Ted Suekawa. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champions – Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa – Net 68.
Low Net Front – William Au (33) – 40 points. Ted Suekawa (34) -- 17 points.
Low Net Back – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (33) -- 42 points each. Ted Suekawa (34) -- 18 points.
Low Net Total – Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (68) -- 70 points. Mike Miyasaki & William Au (71 tie) -- 17 points each.
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (72) – 12 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Brad Cooper – 18 points. Please refer to Footnotes of Distinction.
Long Drive (Women) – Susie Yanagita – 8 points. Susie also won LD last month!
Low Putts – Gary Umetsu (28) – 23 points. 28 putts also won last month. Mike Miyasaki (29) – 10 points.
Greenies (4) – William Au (#4), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#6), Ron Kienast (#13), Brad Cooper (#17) -- 32 points for each Greenie.
Skins (10 birdies!) – Michael Ha (#2 & 10), Gary Umetsu (#3 & 13), Phil Choi (#7), Frank Doi (#9), Mike Miyasaki (#12, 15 & 17), Will Haberman (#18). 30 points for each Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) Standings:
Starting in July, 2021, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member will be applied to this year’s POY contest. New member bonus points for this year will extend thru the end of June.
POY standings will be posted later.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) 2 + 2 = 1. In order to get to 1, you have to do what Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa did. Get 2nd Low Net Front, 2nd Low Net Back, which results in 1st Low Net Total. It’s the new math!
2) How not to drop! Dennis Kaake (pronounced “cake”), was able to take relief when his ball ended up on the cart path. He listened very carefully to our rules guru, Mike Miyasaki, on where and how to drop his ball and then proceeded to drop it into a divot! Dennis, you can’t always have your cake and eat it too.
3) Dog gone it! Sierra Lakes has always included their 12” hot dog & chips combo for our tournaments. Sadly, they did not provide dogs this year. If you wanted the combo, it set you back $12!
4) No more hotdogs!!! In last month’s tournament, Al Lum, playing to a 21 handicap, shot a 42 front w/ one triple for a net 31! He followed that up w/ a 57(!) on the back nine. He blamed his downfall on the hot dog that he ate at the turn. This month, playing to a 20, he shot a 45 front w/ one quad and then, had a hot dog at the turn! He ended up shooting a 56 back. No more hot dogs for Al!!!
5) DeShambeau Dethroned! On the #18, 489 yard par five, Long Drive hole, Brad “DeShambeau” Cooper hit a bomb that was estimated to be around 400+ yards. His drive ended up just in front of the cart path which left him w/ a very short pitch to the green! Second best was way, way back.
6) Recreation Park change. Please note that our July tournament at Recreation Park in Long Beach has been changed to Saturday, the 16th (it was Sunday, the 17th).
Big money winner this month was Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He won Low Net Back (42 points), tie second Low Net Total (17 points), Low Gross (12 points), second Low Putts (10 points), one Greenie (32 points) and three Skins (90 points) for a total of 203 points. Awesome performance “M&M”! Second was our tournament champion, Ted Suekawa. He was second Low Net Front (17 points), second Low Net Back (18 points) and won Low Net Total (70 points) for a total of 105 points.
Hole-in-One kitty. We’re starting fresh this year since Ray “3-K” Saito won the 3K points HIO kitty for the Ace he got at our Costa Mesa tournament last year in January. The kitty has been reset at 826 points.
In the battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (1 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), Al started strong on the front nine and was one up on Mike. Mike got hot on the back nine and shot a three under 33(!) and ended up five up on Al for the round.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Brookside (Pasadena), Sunday, March 20th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – March 6th. Be sure to get your entry in as soon as possible as our tournaments tend to fill up quickly.

El Dorado Tournament Results
Congratulations to the El Dorado Co-Champions: Dennis Kaake & Danny Sanchez!
Results and scorecard to be added soon.
El Dorado Tournament Summary
Our first tournament of the year graced us w/ perfect golf weather. Temps remained in the mid 60’s and the skies were clear. For those of you who played in last year’s first tournament at Costa Mesa, you will remember the rain, wind and cold weather.
Congratulations to tournament co-champions Dennis Kaake & Danny Sanchez. They both shot net 70.
We had 31 players which included three guests: Bruce Tower (Michael Ha), Jennifer Okutsu (Sean’s wife) and Chuck Laine (Al Lum). Noticeably missing were last year’s POY (Player of the Year), Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu, and our 2020 POY, Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. So our last two POY’s decide to miss the first tournament to give everyone else a head start. Noticeably present was Sandy Hanada. She had to give up golf last year due to a frozen shoulder (or was it a cold shoulder she gave to husband Ron?). Glad to have you back, Sandy!
We finished last year w/ 16 new members bringing our total membership up to 56. This is the most new members that I can recall that we’ve had in a single season. This year we lost two members but gained two members: Art Fukumoto, a returning member, and Gary Sanders, who found us on the website. No one gets credit for them since they joined on their own.
This month’s early bird winner is Craig Ogawa. He gets 20 points for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Co-Champions – Dennis Kaake & Danny Sanchez – Net 70.
Low Net Front – Al Lum (31) – 52 points. Ray Cox (35) -- 22 points.
Low Net Back – Gil Ishizu, Sean Okutsu & Dennis Kaake (34 tie) -- 24 points each.
Low Net Total – Dennis Kaake (70) -- 80 points. Danny Sanchez would have tied for first but didn’t enter! Dennis Schmitz (71) -- 34 points.
Low Gross – Sean Okutsu (78) – 14 points.
Long Drive (Men) – Ron Kienast – 20 points.
Long Drive (Women) – Susie Yanagita – 6 points.
Low Putts – Michael Ha & Ron Kienast (28 tie) – 14 points each.
Greenies (3) – Taylor Sanchez (#3), Scott Sato (#12), Duane Tomono (#17) -- 40 points for each Greenie. No one got a Greenie on #9.
Skins (6) – Ray Cox (birdies on #3 & 5), Brad Cooper (Eagle! on #7), Michael Yee (birdie on #14), Sean Okutsu (birdie on #15), Duane Tomono (birdie on #16). 50 points for each Skin.
Player of the Year (POY) Standings:
Starting in July, 2021, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member will be applied to this year’s POY contest. New member bonus points for this year will extend thru the end of June. POY standings will be posted later.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) “DS”. Our top six finishers were Dennis Kaake (70), Danny Sanchez (70), Dennis Schmitz (71), Sean Okutsu (72), Taylor Sanchez (73) and Susie Yanagita (73). If your first or last name didn’t start w/ a D or S, you didn’t stand a chance!
2) Food for thought! Dennis Kaake (pronounced “cake”) was this month’s tournament champion. Our previous tournament champion was Cookie Lelevier. It appears that you need to be named after one of the major food groups (or at least a dessert) to be a tournament champion.
3) Hat Trick! Ray “3K” Saito, our HIO winner last year, scored a hat trick by ending up in three different sand traps on the same hole! We might have to change his name to Ray “Sandman” Saito.
4) Where Eagles Soar. Brad Cooper scored an Eagle on the #7 par five. Ironically, this is the same hole that Ray “3K” Saito got his hat trick!
5) Reversal of Fortune! Al Lum, playing to a 21 handicap, shot a 42 front w/ one triple for a net 31! He followed that up w/ a 57(!) on the back nine. He blames it on the hot dog he ate at the turn.
Big money winner this month was Ray Cox. He was second Low Net Front (22 points) and won two Skins (100 points) for a total of 122 points. Second was our tournament champion, Dennis Kaake. He tied for Low Net Back (24 points) and won Low Net Total (80 points) for a total of 104 points.
Hole-in-One kitty. We’re starting fresh this year since Ray “3-K” Saito won the 3K point HIO kitty for the Ace he got at our Costa Mesa tournament last year in January. The kitty has been reset at 826 points
In the battle of the Titans (aka real golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (1 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (21), there is nothing to report as “M&M” did not play. Al finished two up on M&M last year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: Sierra Lakes (Fontana), Saturday, February 19th, 10:30 am. Deadline to register – February 5th.

POSTED OCTOBER 25, 2021
Congratulations to Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu for becoming our 2021 POY! He gets to represent OCAAGA in the Tournament of Club Champions held at the end of the year. We’ll all be pulling for you Gary!
Rain was not in the forecast but we did get a few drops. For the most part, Mother Nature cooperated and we stayed dry. The weather stayed cloudy and cool and remained in the 60’s. The course played extremely tough as evidenced by the number of high scores posted and pin placements made putting difficult. No one was able to break Net Par.
We had one of our smallest turn outs w/ only 23 players which included two repeat guests, Heidi Cordova (Ray/Linda Cox) and Lawrence Koh (Al Lum). Several of our members decided to go to Hawaii for a golfing vacation and forgo playing in our last tournament. New member Michael Yee (Sam Wong’s nephew) was playing in his first tournament. He was scheduled to play last month but it was his wife’s birthday and so he wisely cancelled. Good decision, Michael!
No new members added this month. We finished the year w/ 16 new members bringing our total membership up to 56. This is the most new members that I can recall that we’ve had in a single season. Our new members this year are Will Haberman, Andy Sayakhot, Jon Suzuki, Rex Shin, Allie Onest, Dennis Kaake, Cookie Lelevier, Sean Okutsu, Taylor Sanchez, Jay Inouye, Ron Kienast, Brad Cooper, Eddie Nagahashi, Danney Kim, Ronald Wong and Michael Yee. Thanks to all of the members for making this an outstanding recruiting year!
This month’s early bird winner is our Player of the Year leader, Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu. He gets $20 for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Tournament Champion – Nellie “Cookie” Lelevier. Cookie shot a net 72 and is one of our new members (recruited by Linda Cox but she let Ray have the credit). She and Linda play together in a senior women’s soccer league. Cookie is an ex-PE teacher and excels in many other sports.
Low Net Front – Scott Sato (33) – 31 points. Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu & Dennis Kaake (34 tie) – 6 points each.
Low Net Back – Jay Inouye & Kevin Lee (38 tie) – 22 points each.
Low Net Total – Scott Sato (73) -- 52 points. Cookie Lelevier would have won the Low Net Total but she did not enter it! Cookie – you have to pay to play! Kevin Lee & Dennis Kaake (74 tie) – 11 points each.
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (82) – 6 points. “M&M” finally figured it out. He was runner up the last two month. Scott Sato would have won w/ an 80 but didn’t enter! Scotty – you and Cookie need to get together on these side bets.
Long Drive (Men) – Mike Yee – 16 points. Mike is one of our new members and was recruited by his uncle, Sam Wong. This was his first tournament. He beat out one of our best – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki.
Long Drive (Women) – No winner. No one entered for the second month in a row.
Low Putts – Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu (30) – 14 points. Scott Sato, Jay Inouye & Michael Ha (35 tie) – 2 points each.
Greenies (5) – Jay Inouye (#2), Al Lum (#5), Kevin Lee (#7), Mike Yee (#10), Al Lum (#16) -- 6 points for each Greenie. Skins (8) – Scott Sato (birdies on #1, #9, #11, & #17), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (birdie on #4, Eagle on #6, par on #18), Gary Umetsu (birdie on #8). 27 points for each Skin.
Starting in July, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member will be applied to next year’s POY contest. On the last two tournaments, bonus points are awarded to the top three finishers. The final tournament of the year had Gary “Catch Me if You Can” Umetsu leading Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa by 33 points, followed by Michael Ha who trailed Ted by 21 points. If Ted or Michael finished in the top three and Gary didn’t, they would earn double points as a bonus which could push them past Gary.
1) Gary Umetsu (326 points) – Congratulations to Gary for becoming our 2021 POY! This is his first win. He managed to hold off a last minute charge from Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa to keep his #1 spot. He held the #1 spot for the last six months in a row, won three of our tournaments this year and recruited new members Ron Kienast and Brad Cooper. Awesome accomplishment and outstanding golfing, Gary!
2) Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (296 points) – Ted retained his second position. Had he finished in the top three, he would have received double points which would have put him in contention for winning POY. He held the #1 spot before Gary bumped him six months ago. 25 of his points are for recruiting Jay Inouye. Ted was one of the three that tied for POY in 2008! That was the first and only time we’ve had multiple POY winners.
3) Michael Ha (275 points) – Michael stayed in the third spot. He also didn’t earn any bonus points this tournament. He sat in the #1 spot for the first three months this year. 50 of his points came from recruiting two new members Rex Shin & Will Haberman.
4) Scott Sato (268 points) – Scotty had an outstanding tournament and moved up into the fourth spot. He is a three-peat POY but has only won in odd numbered years. Scotty – wasn’t this an odd numbered year?
5) Gil “Aloha Kid” Ishizu (233 points) – Gil missed the tournament because he’s in Hawaii playing golf! He dropped from fourth to fifth.
1) Stacked Foursome. The first foursome out included Scott Sato (7 handicap), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (0), Kevin Lee (8), and Jay Inouye (18). Scotty & Mike garnered the most points during the tournament and Kevin & Jay tied for Low Net Back and both got a Greenie!
2) 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-3. Believe it or not, these are the scores and corresponding putts that the Stacked Foursome got on hole #6, the 440 yard par five. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki got an Eagle(!) by chipping it in, Kevin Lee got a birdie by chipping it in, Jay Inouye got a par by chipping it in, and Scott Sato, who didn’t get the message, got a bogey by three-putting. Golf is such an easy game!
3) Dribble this! On hole #5, the 176 yard par three, Al Lum used his 4 hybrid to dribble(!) his ball all the way onto the green and past the hole to edge out Kevin Lee for the Greenie. There was no one more surprised than Al that his ball even made it to the green!
4) Double dipping. On hole #16, the 161 par three (over water), Al Lum bagged his second Greenie by NOT dribbling it. He stuck his ball 12’ to the left of the pin.
5) Having his Cake! For those of you who have been wondering, that’s how you pronounce Dennis Kaake’s last name. As it turns out, Dennis is married to Linda Cox’s sister. He also went to Lakewood High School, the same as Al Lum. However, unlike Linda, there’s no common relationship there.
6) Tree trouble! On hole #12, the 433 yard par five, Gary Umetsu, our POY, got stuck behind a few trees. He ended up carding a 14(!) on this hole. Ouch! If it’s any consolation, Gary, Arnold Palmer, during the 1961 L.A. Open that was being held at Rancho Park in West Los Angeles, took a 12 on hole #9. How did he do it? After his drive, he hit four consecutive balls out of bounds and missed a short putt which would have given him an 11! There’s a plaque on that hole that commemorates his feat. Gary, you’ll get your plaque at the EOY banquet!
7) Bad company? There were many others who had blow-up holes. Al Lum had an 8, 9 & 11 (a quad, quad and a six over) on the front nine and a 9 (a quint) on the back. His only salvation was that his 110 score was adjusted to a 105! As a group, we had nineteen 8’s, eleven 9’s, three 10’s, one 11, one 12, and one 14! Fortunately for everyone, Troy Grant is donating two private golf lessons at our EOY banquet.
Big money winner this month was Scott Sato. Scotty decided to finish strong in our last regular tournament of the year. He won Low Net Front (31 points), won Low Net Total (52 points), tied for second Low Putts (2 points) and won four(!) Skins (108 points) for a total of 190 points. Somehow, four Skins has a very weird sound about it. Great shooting, Scotty! Second was Mike “M&M” Miyasaki. He won Low Gross (6 points) and three Skins (81 points) for a total of 87 points.
Hole-in-One Kitty:
No one got an Ace during this tournament and so Ray “3-K” Saito wins this year’s $3K HIO kitty for the Ace he got at our Costa Mesa tournament in January. He already received an advance of $500 and will receive the rest (w/o interest) at the EOY tournament and banquet. A new HIO kitty will start again in January.
In the battle of the Titans (aka golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (0 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), Al had a very off day. He shot a 110 but miraculously only lost two Skins to M&M! Al ended two up on M&M for the year. The battle of the Titans will start new again next year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: End of Year tournament & banquet, Saturday, November 13th, 11:00 am. Deadline to register – October 30th. This is always a fun event and, as always, there will be plenty of raffle prizes. If you can’t make it to golf, you’re still welcome to come to just the banquet. The Board is picking up the banquet tab (plus two free drinks) for all members. Guests can attend for $20. Hope to see you there!

Lakewood Tournament Summary
POSTED SEPTEMBER 21, 2021
Even though we had great golf weather, Lakewood Country Club played extremely tough for most of the field. Only three players managed to break Net Par. Most of the field struggled w/ their game and ended up having to post much higher scores.
We had our second largest turnout of the year w/ 36 players which included new members Danney Kim (Michael Ha) and Ronald Wong (Frank Doi) along w/ four guests Russell Okutsu, Nick Sekiya, Stephen Yoo and Westin Hirai (all invited by Sean Okutsu). New member Michael Yee (Sam Wong’s nephew) was scheduled to play but it was his wife’s birthday and so he was replaced by guest Elmer Choe (Danney Kim). Also missing from action was Al Lum. He had a medical issue in the morning and had to withdraw. Happy to report that he is doing fine.
Since last month, we have added three more new members: Danney Kim (Michael Ha), Ronald Wong (Frank Doi) and Michael Yee (Sam Wong). We are now up to 16 new members for the year which brings us up to 56 total members. Our new members are: Will Haberman, Andy Sayakhot, Jon Suzuki, Rex Shin, Allie Onest, Dennis Kaake, Cookie Lelevier, Sean Okutsu, Taylor Sanchez, Jay Inouye, Ron Kienast, Brad Cooper, Eddie Nagahashi, Danney Kim, Ronald Wong and Michael Yee.
This month’s early bird winner is Board member, Tournament Registration and Membership Chairperson Susie Yanagita. She gets $20 for having her name pulled and having her entry in before the deadline. If she wins again next month the selection process will be taken under review.
Tournament Champion – Sean Okutsu (68). Sean missed last month’s tournament but made up for it by earning Tournament Champion honors. Congrats, Sean!
Low Net Front – David Kato & Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (34 tie) – 40 points each.
Low Net Back – Sean Okutsu (31!) – 56 points. Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa & Dwayne “The Dominator” Tomono (35 tie) – 12 points each.
Low Net Total – Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (69) -- 91 points. Ron Kienast (71) – 39 points. Sean Okutsu would have won the Low Net Total but he did not enter it! I heard that Ted and Ron are both building a shrine to honor Sean for his generosity.
Low Gross – Sean Okutsu (74) – 18 points. Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (79) – no points. “M&M” was also last month’s runner up.
Long Drive (Men) – Steve Yoo – 30 points. Steve was one of Sean Okutsu’s guest and he ended up w/ a 305 yard blast!
Long Drive (Women) – No winner. No one entered and Allie Onest did not play this month.
Low Putts – Paul “I Own You” Onest (30) – 22 points. Danney Kim, Sean Okutsu & Ron Kienast (31 tie) – 3 points each.
Greenies (4) – Sam Wong (#3), Patrick Hanoa (#5), Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (#12), and Ray Cox (#17) -- 36 points for each Greenie.
Skins (5) – Ron Kienast (birdie #2), Sam Wong (birdie on #3), guest Russell Okutsu (birdie on #7), new member Danney Kim (birdie #10), Paul “I Own You” Onest (birdie #18) – 88(!) points for each Skin.
Starting in July, the 25 bonus points earned for recruiting a new member will be applied to next year’s POY contest. On the last two tournaments, bonus points are awarded to the top three finishers. The bonus points are double the normal points earned. This has made for a very interesting finish since only one of the top three qualifiers, Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa, finished in the top three spots this tournament. This has moved Ted into second place ahead of Michael Ha. Gary Umetsu was using his brand new clubs and had an extremely off day but still managed to hold onto the #1 spot.
1. Gary Umetsu (312 points) – Gary previously lead the field by 88 points but his off-day results allowed his closest competitors to shrink that margin. He has held the #1 spot for five months in a row, has won three of our seven tournaments this year and recruited new members Ron Kienast and Brad Cooper.
2. Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa (279 points) – Ted picks up 62 points (31 bonus points for finishing in the top three this month). That propels him into the second spot and puts him just 33 points behind Gary Umetsu. He held the #1 spot until Gary bumped him four months ago. 25 of his points are for recruiting Jay Inouye. Ted was one of the three that tied for POY in 2008! That was the first and only time we’ve had multiple POY winners.
3. Michael Ha (258 points) – Michael drops from second to third. He needed to finish in the top three spots this month to earn the additional bonus points which would have kept him in second. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. He sat in the #1 spot for the first three months this year. 50 of his points came from recruiting two new members Rex Shin & Will Haberman.
4. “Aloha Gil” Ishizu (233 points) – Gil has been playing well and he has moved into the fourth spot (he was in sixth last month). Scott Sato (223 points) – Scotty remains in fifth spot. He is a three-peat POY but has only won in odd numbered years.
1) 40%. This is how much the membership has increased this year. We started w/ 40 members and w/ the addition of 16 new members, we are now up to 56 members.
2) Job Security? Michael Ha wants to keep his boss happy and so he got her husband, Danney Kim, to join as a new member. Smart thinking, Michael! His 25 bonus points will be applied to next year’s POY contest.
3) Double Jeopardy. On the #8, par 4 hole, both Michael Ha and guest Elmer Choe were playing a TaylorMade ball. They both hit their second shots and then realized when they got to the green that they had mistakenly hit each other’s ball! They both ended up going back to the fairway to replay their second shots. Michael made his putt for a birdie and Elmer two putted for a par. Each was assessed a two stroke penalty turning a birdie into a bogie and a par into a double. Ouch! If this story sounds familiar, Paul “I Own You” Onest and Mike Ikeda did the same thing at last month’s San Joaquin tournament when their balls ended up very close to each other just off the green. The only difference is they were playing Titleists. Beware if you and your playing partners are using one of those “T” balls.
4) Water, what water? On the par three, 12th hole (water on the left), “Aloha Gil” Ishizu hit into the water about a foot or two near the edge and his ball popped out onto the grass! Gil’s next words were “grass-ee-ous”.
5) Tree Lover. Paul “I Own You” Onest was having a troublesome day. From his count, he hit no fewer than 13 or 14 trees. 3 or 4 on the front and at least 10 on the back alone. 5 of his 7 shots on #14 hit trees. He then one-putted from 20’ for his double! So that’s how you win Low Putts!
6) How do you turn a zero putt into 110 points? If you’re Paul “I Own You” Onest, you chip your ball in on the #18, par 5 hole, for a birdie winning a Skin worth 88 points and also win the Low Putts by one(!) putt for another 22 points!
7) Share the wealth. Sean Okutsu shot lights out and could have really cleaned up on the points but did not enter Low Net Total (91 points). Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa will be eternally grateful for his generosity.
8) Stacking the Deck. Sean Okutsu, our Tournament Champion, brought four guests. Two of them ended up in the money. Russell Okutsu, his brother, won a Skin w/ a birdie on hole #7 (88 points), and Stephen Yoo, won Men’s Long Drive w/ a 305 yard blast (30 points)!
9) Rare Second Chance Winners (aka “losers’ bracket”). If you didn’t win one of the tournament events or optionals, you get a second chance to earn a “gift” by having your name pulled. When was the last time you saw Mike “M&M” Miyasaki, Scott Sato and Gary Umetsu qualify for one of these gems? Big money winner this month was Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa. He tied Low Net Front (40 points), tied second Low Net Back (12 points), won Low Net Total (91 points), and won a Greenie (36 points) for a total of 179 points. Finishing second was new member Ron Kienast w/ 127 points. He was second Low Net Total (39 points), tied second Low Putts (3 points) and won a Skin (88 points). He was followed by Paul “I Own You” Onest w/ 110 points. He won Low Putts (22 points) and a Skin (88 points). Sean Okutsu would have replaced Ted “Mr. Salsa” Suekawa as this month’s winner but didn’t enter the Low Net Total (91 points)! Sean – What were you thinking?!!!
Hole-in-One Kitty
$1,500 of the initial $3,000 is still available. “3-K” Ray Saito scored an Ace at our Costa Mesa tournament in January. He received an advance of $500 but will need to wait until the end of the year to get the rest just in case someone else duplicates the feat. If there are any other “Acers” this year, they will split the pot. Next month’s tournament at San Dimas will be the last time to qualify for this
In the battle of the Titans (aka golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (0 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (19), there was no blood as Al had to withdraw from the tournament. Al remains up 4 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”. Next up: San Dimas, Saturday, October 23rd, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – October 9th. This will be our last tournament before our EOY (End of Year) tournament on Saturday, November 13th. It will determine our POY.

Miles Square Tournament Summary
POSTED JUNE 16, 2021
Sunny and warm weather w/ clear skies made for a great day of golf! We played the “Classic” course at Mile Square which actually used part of the “Players” course”. In case you haven’t heard, Mile Square is in the process of consolidating its two courses into one.
We had 40(!) players this month which included five guests: Paul Chung (Michael Ha), “Dancing” Dee Ishida (Ted Suekawa), Tom & Jenny Teraoka (Gil Ishizu), and Brad Cooper (Gary Umetsu). This was our largest turnout that we’ve had in quite a while and so the Board decided to have two flights. Flight A was for those w/ a course handicap of 12 or lower (14 players) and Flight B was 13 and higher (21 players). The two Flights were only for the Net Scores: Low Net Front, Low Net Back, and Low Net Total. Everything else was played as one flight.
Taylor Sanchez, Danny’s son, is a new member but still needs to establish a handicap index! Taylor – you better work on that as a priority. It’s tough to win w/ this crowd w/o one! We want to welcome back Gary & Marlene Ching. The last time these two played in an OCAAGA tournament was pre-COVID shutdown. Conspicuously missing was Mr. Birthday Boy himself, Steve Kumagai. Happy BD Steve-O. I assume you missed the tournament because you had a bunch of ladies helping you celebrate your special day. Otherwise, why would you have missed all of the tournament fun we had?!!!
June is the last month that you can earn 25 POY bonus points for recruiting new members in 2021. Any bonus points for recruiting new members after this month will be applied to next year’s POY. We are now up to 11 new members for the year which brings us up to 51 total members. Our new members are: Will Haberman, Andy Sayakhot, Jon Suzuki, Rex Shin, Allie Onest, Dennis Kaake, Cookie Lelevier, Sean Okutsu, Taylor Sanchez, Jay Inouye and Ron Kienast.
This month’s early bird winner is Board member, IT Director and tournament statistician, Scott Sato. Scotty gets $20 for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline.
Results:
Tournament Champion – Gary Ching (63!)
Low Net Front A – Kevin Lee (32) – 27 points. Allie Onest (34) – 11 points.
Low Net Front B – Ray “3-K Ray” Saito (31) – 29 points. Susie Yanagita (32) – 12 points
Low Net Back A – Patrick Hanoa (33) – 27 points. Scott Sato & Ron Kienast (34 tie) – 5 points each.
Low Net Back B – Gary “Ca-Ching” Ching (30) – 29 points. David Kato, Dennis Kaake, Ted Suekawa & Gil Ishizu (35 tie) – 3 points each.
Low Net Total A – Kevin Lee (68) – 42 points. Allie Onest & Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (71 tie) – 9 points each.
Low Net Total B – Ray “3-K Ray” Saito (68) – 42 points. Dennis Schmitz (71) – 18 points. Gary Ching would have won w/ a net 63 but didn’t enter!
Low Gross – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (75) – 18 points. Brad Cooper (78) & Michael Ha (84) – no points.
Long Drive (Men) – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki – 26 points
Long Drive (Women) – Allie Onest -- 8 points. Allie was also last month’s winner.
Low Putts – Scott Sato (29) – 22 points. Scotty was runner up last month. Michael Ha (30) – 9 points. Duane “The Dominator” Tomono & William Au (31 tie) – no points. Duane was last month’s winner.
Greenies (4) – Sean Okutsu (#5), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#8), Ray Cox (#13), Patrick Hanoa (#15) – 38 points each.
Skins (6) – Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (#1), Allie Onest (#7), Michael Ha (#12), Patrick Hanoa (#14 & 16), Paul Onest (#15) -- 63 points for each Skin.
New rule change: The 25 bonus points earned for new members joining will only extend thru June. Any points earned after that will be applied to next year’s POY contest.
No change in positions this month but the gap is closing. Only 30 points separates the top four places. It’s turning out to be a very exciting horse race.
1) Gary Umetsu (200 points) – Gary remains in the #1 spot after moving from fourth the month before last. He’s won three of our six tournaments this year. He received 25 POY bonus points for recruiting new member Ron Kienast.
2) Ted Suekawa (180 points) – Ted stays in the #2 spot after getting bumped from the #1 spot by Gary Umetsu last month. 25 of his points are for recruiting Jay Inouye. Rumor has it that he may get his guest, “Dancing” Dee Ishida, to join. That would put him back into first by five points. Ted was one of the three that tied for POY in 2008! That was the first and only time that ever happened.
3) Patrick Hanoa (175 points) – Patrick is within striking distance. He is a previous POY winner.
4) Michael Ha (170 points) – Michael is still in the hunt. He sat in the #1 spot for the first three months this year. 50 of his points came from recruiting two new members – Rex Shin & Will Haberman.
5) Ray Cox (147 points) – Ray is the only one in the top 5 who has missed a tournament. 50 of his points are for recruiting two new members -- Dennis Kaake & Cookie Lelevier.
1) What’s my secret? How does one shoot a net 63? If you’re Gary “Ca-Ching” Ching, you take a year off. That’s how!
2) Shank me Baby! Al Lum was having a bit of an off day w/ his short irons. He had (from what he recalls) at least four shanked shots. The best one was when he was 12’ left of the 100 yard marker and hit his ball 90 degrees to the right (from the direction of the green) and his ball ended up ON the 100 yard marker! The only good news is that he was able to take relief off the marker for his next shot.
3) He’s BACK. New member Sean Okutsu’s back doesn’t seem to be bothering him anymore. He’s managed to complete the last two tournaments w/o having to withdraw or cancel. Talk about a golfer. Sean’s name showed up on almost every Closest to the Pin and the Long Drive hole. His CP on #5 held but his monster Long Drive just got edged out by Mike “M&M” Miyasaki.
4) To Err is Human. Last month at Montebello, the Greenie on hole #9 was inadvertently awarded to David Kato but should have been given to Sean Okutsu. Sean – You should have received your 45 clams from Ted Suekawa at the tournament. If not, “checks in the mail”.
5) Repeat Performance. The only father – daughter members, Paul & Allie Onest, both won Skins this month and last!
6) Missed the Boat. Gary Ching would have won Low Net Total Flight B (43 points) but didn’t enter! Dennis Kaake would have won a Skin on #9 (63 points) w/ a birdie but didn’t enter.
Big money winner this month is Patrick Hanoa. He won 191 points: Low Net Back A (37 points), one Greenie (38 points), and two Skins (126 points). Mike “M&M” Miyasaki was second w/ 154 points.
Hole-in-One kitty. $1,500 of the initial $3,000 is still available. Ray “3-K Ray” Saito scored an Ace at our Costa Mesa tournament in January. He received an advance of $500 but will need to wait until the end of the year to get the rest just in case someone else duplicates the feat. If there are any other “Acers” this year, they will split the pot.
In the battle of the Titans (aka golfer vs. work in progress), Mike “M&M” Miyasaki (4 handicap) vs. Al “I Need More Strokes” Lum (20), Al got “Timex-ed” by M&M -- He took a licking but is still ticking. Mike took 9(!) Skins from Al. This was Mike’s first win of the season. Al remains up 7 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
Next up: El Dorado (Long Beach), Sunday, July 18th, 10:00 am. Deadline to register – July 4th!

Montebello Tournament Results
POSTED MAY 28, 2021
We had 33 players this month which included two guests, Heidi Cordova (Ray Cox) and Eden Kane (Eugene Kanishiro), and new member Ron Kienast who was recruited by Gary Umetsu. This was our largest turnout of the year! New member Sean Okutsu was finally able to play his first complete round. He had to withdraw from or cancel the previous two tournaments due to recurring back issues. We are now up to 11 new members for the year which brings us up to 51 total members! Remember, new member POY points (25) for 2021 are only eligible thru June. Any new member points earned after that will apply to 2022. Our new members are: Will Haberman, Andy Sayakhot, Jon Suzuki, Rex Shin, Allie Onest, Dennis Kaake, Cookie Lelevier, Sean Okutsu, Taylor Sanchez, Jay Inouye and Ron Kienast.
Gary Umetsu is this month’s tournament Champion for the third time this year! A 60% win rate is not too shabby. He shot a 79 for a Net 65. Last month at Rio Hondo he also shot a 79 for a Net 63. And at Sierra Lakes in February, he shot an 87 for a Net 73 (it was very windy that day). If you’re wondering how Gary did at the other two tournaments, he shot a Net 89 at Costa Mesa in January (it was raining) and a Net 82 at Brookside in March (it was sunny).
This month’s early bird winner is Mr. Hole-in-One himself, Ray “3-K Ray” Saito. He gets $20 for having his name pulled and having his entry in before the deadline. The Board is trying to make an executive decision that if you win the Hole-in-One kitty, you shouldn’t be able to win the early bird for five years!

Player of the Year (POY) Standings:
New rule change: The 25 bonus points earned for new members joining will only extend thru June. Any points earned after that will be applied to next year’s POY contest.
1) Gary Umetsu (178 points) – Gary has surged into the #1 spot after winning this month’s tournament and also receiving 25 POY bonus points for recruiting new member Ron Kienast. Prior to this month he was in 4th. Gary’s new motto is now “Catch me if you can!”
2) Ted Suekawa (141 points) – Ted gets bumped from the #1 spot by Gary Umetsu and now sits in 2nd. 25 of his points are for recruiting Jay Inouye. Ted was one of the three that tied for POY in 2008! That was the first and only time that ever happened.
3) Patrick Hanoa (134 points) – Patrick keeps making his way up the ladder. He was in the fifth spot last month. He’s also a previous POY winner.
4) Michael Ha (131 points) – Michael sat in the #1 spot for the first three months this year. 50 of his points came from recruiting two new members – Rex Shin & Will Haberman.
5) Ray Cox (129 points) – Ray missed last month’s tournament but still remains in the top 5. 50 of his points are for recruiting two new members -- Dennis Kaake & Cookie Lelevier.
Footnotes of Distinction:
1) Neither rain nor shine nor traffic accident will prevent me from playing! New member Cookie LeLevier was playing in her first tournament as a member and got rear ended on the freeway on her way to the course. She was going to cancel but since her car was still drivable, she decided to play! You just can’t keep a good (i.e. determined!) woman down.
2) Reversal of Fortune. Allie Onest, playing to a 9 handicap shot a ten over 46 on the first nine. So what did she do on the second nine? A smooth two over for a 37! She said the first nine holes were her warm up holes.
3) Like daughter, like father. Allie Onest birdied hole #5 and won a Skin. Paul Onest, Allie’s dad, followed that up by doing the same on hole #6 – a birdie and a Skin! Paul can say he upped Allie because he also got a Greenie on that hole! You might say they “own-it”.
4) Soar like an Eagle. On the #12, par 4 hole, Linda Cox made a two for an Eagle! Talk about “blind luck”, she didn’t realize what she had done until her playing partner and guest, Heidi Cordova, found her ball in the cup! I think she’s still blaming hubby Ray for not entering her in Skins. Divorce papers are on their way!
5) Walk, walk, walk. We had nine players who walked the course this month! That’s the most we’ve ever had and the trend seems to be gaining popularity. We older, out of shape guys, prefer to ride, ride, ride!
6) Push Cart Extravagance. Two of our walkers, Frank Doi and Duane Tomono, have taken this to a new level. Both of them showed up w/ push carts that are fully loaded and also drive themselves! Duane’s also has a built in seat. However, I think they both passed on getting the automatic tooth brush option.
7) Putt, putt, putt. That’s the sound a motorboat makes or what Mike “M&M” Miyasaki ended up doing. He hit 14 greens in regulations and paired that w/ 41 putts! The good news, according to M&M, is that he only had one 4-putt green! So now you know why he’s a 3 handicap!
8) On a roll! Gary Umetsu continues to dominate this year’s tournament play. Playing to a 14 handicap, he shot 79 for a net 65. He also shot 79 at last month’s tournament at Rio Hondo w/ a 16 handicap for a net 63. Only one of his lucky charms, Ron Kienast (9 handicap), played w/ him this time and he shot an 80 for a second best Net of 71! His other playing partner was Sean Okutsu (5 handicap) and he shot a 78 (Best Low Gross) for a Net 73! Next time these guys play together, someone better test their drinking water!
9) Still losing it? Gil Ishizu took his bag off his cart to look for some tape. When he got to his ball to hit his second shot, he realized that he had forgotten to put his bag back on the cart! A word of advice, Gil…It’s not necessary to remove your golf bag to find tape! Or if you do, make sure to tie a ribbon around your finger.
Big money winner for the second month in a row was tournament champion Gary “Lucky Charms” Umetsu. He ended up winning 256 points (a slight increase over the 231 points he won last month): Tournament Champion (77 points), tie Low Net Front (33), Low Net Back (44), and two Skins (102). His missed tying for Low Gross by one stroke. Gary still leads in points won for the year which is now at 639.
In the battle of the Titans (aka golfer vs. work in progress), Mike Miyasaki (3 handicap) vs. Al Lum (20), Al took three Skins from Mike but realized after he got home that he had given himself a stroke on the 18th handicap hole and shouldn’t have. So Al only wins two Skins from Mike. He remains up 16 for the year.
Please remember to post your OCAAGA tournament score as the Board is no longer doing this. It should be posted as an “Away” score and NOT a “Tournament”.
