Over the last week, six Oak Hill students competed in 2020 LMT Spring Online Tournament. Usually LMT (Lexington Math Tournament) is an in-person full day competition that includes several individual and team rounds. This year was different. LMT was offered as an online contest that started on May 9 and ended on May 15. There were no individual rounds. Students were supposed to form teams and to work on competition problems together using remote collaboration tools. Team members do not have to be from the same school, so "super teams" are allowed.
Lexington Math Tournaments traditionally offer very interesting problems that are challenging even for the most advanced math students, with topics going far beyond traditional high school math curriculum. Big thanks to the organizers for putting together this set of 30 problems for 2020 online contest:

Oak Hill was represented by Elena, Aaron, Steven, Dhruv, Isaac and Justin. Their team, Mean But Not Average, finished in 20th place with 21 correctly solved problems (21.1048 weighted score) and got recognition as one of the "2020 ONLINE SPRING LMT TOP TEAMS". The contest was open to any team across the US and there were 167 teams in total.

Today Oak Hill team competed in the Massachusetts State Mathcounts competition and finished 7th! This is a remarkable achievement and a noticeable improvement from the last year's 13th place. Congratulations!
The competition was held at Wentworth Institute of Technology. In total there were 151 students representing 44 schools all over Massachusetts who earned the right to come to the state competition. 116 students were on one of the 29 school teams of 4, the rest were individual high scorers. All those students qualified through one of the 7 Massachusetts Chapter Mathcounts competitions either as members of the top school teams in each Chapter or as high scoring individuals. Overall in those Chapter competitions participated about 900 students pre-selected at the school level and 110 school teams.
Oak Hill was represented by a team of 4 (Elena, Aaron, Steven and Dhruv) that qualified from the 3rd place in the Mass. MetroNorth Chapter Mathcounts competition a month earlier. There were many great teams at the state championship coming from other chapters, but Oak Hill team came in 7th out of 29, losing only to 1st, 2nd and 5th teams from our MetroNorth Chapter, 1st and 2nd teams from MetroWest Chapter, and 1st team from NorthEast Chapter. It was a close race as the 4th place team was only within 2 points - a cost of one correctly solved team round problem.
Elena and Aaron were the top scorers on our team finishing in top 25% in written competition and placing 31 and 32 respectively out of 151 state competition participants.
