OAK HILL MATHCOUNTS CLUB

About oak Hill Mathcounts

The Oak Hill MATHCOUNTS club is run by Newton South student volunteers and MATHCOUNTS alumni. The main goal is to broaden and solidify mathematical knowledge of middle school students by preparing for and participating in the MATHCOUNTS competitions. MATHCOUNTS is the premier competition series for middle-school kids that has school, chapter, state, and national levels.

During practices, students will have the opportunity to learn about topics and approaches outside the standard school math curriculum. We aim to give students a solid understanding of not only algebra and geometry, but also counting & probability and number theory. The MATHCOUNTS club will also provide opportunities to practice skills such as test-taking, time management, collaboration, and general problem-solving. Students will learn to solve problems from past MATHCOUNTS competitions, learn and practice selected math topics, and do practice tests.

Our volunteers are MATHCOUNTS alumni with abundant competition experience at both the middle school and high school level, and will be happy to help with developing competition preparation strategies and setting short-term and long-term goals for each student.

In January, the MATHCOUNTS club will hold the School MATHCOUNTS Competition that is open to any student at school. Ultimately, twelve students will be sent to the Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition to represent Oak Hill, of which four will be the official Oak Hill team.

In addition to MATHCOUNTS, the club will participate in several other local competitions for middle school teams, such as Lexington Math Tournament (LMT), Acton-Boxborough Math Competition (ABMC), and Purple Comet! Math Meet. Please review the list of competitions on the "Competitions" page. Participation in those competitions is open to any student at Oak Hill.

We need your help!

The club is run by volunteers, is self-funded and is always looking for volunteers. We especially need student-volunteers who can lead school practices. With more participation, the program can be extended to support more students of various levels. There are many other volunteering opportunities beyond teaching. Please let us know if you can help!
