Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is a civil rights law designed to prevent any form of discrimination based on disability. Section 504 is designed to provide equal access and fairness in general education to students with disabilities, thereby leveling the playing field for them through what is known as a Section 504 Plan. Section 504 accommodations provide changes to how a student accesses information and demonstrates learning. It does not substantially change the instructional level, content or performance criteria.

Under Section 504, a student is considered to have a disability if that student has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. Additional information about Section 504 is provided in the GCS 504 Resource Guide.

Not every student who has a disability under Section 504 needs a Section 504 plan as there may be accommodations in place that already ensure access to education, such as medication, a behavior plan or a health care plan.

If you would like to meet to discuss your child’s needs, please contact the school-based Section 504 Coordinator - Susannah Fleming, Oak View School Counselor (336-819-2935).
