On this page you will find links to information on students in crisis and a variety of other topics to help parents and guardians. The GCS Resource Guide follows with a wealth of community resources.
If a GCS student is in crisis of any kind, call 988. If it is an emergency, please call 911.
988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That could be:
Thoughts of suicide
Mental health or substance use crisis, or
Any other kind of emotion distress
People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help.
Sometimes students may make a threat of self harm by their words, writing, or actions. If a student says they want to harm themselves the following protocols will be followed at Oak View Elementary.
Teachers are to notify an administrator and a member of the Suicide Intervention Team (SIT) ASAP. The members of the Suicide Intervention Team are Ms. Katona (School Social Worker), Mrs. Prevatte (School Psychologist), and Mrs. Fleming (School Counselor)
The student must be interviewed by the SIT team and the parent must be contacted before the end of the school day. If a parent is not contacted before the end of the day the student is required to stay at the school until contact has been made with the parent.
If a remote student makes a threat of self harm in a live session or chat, the teacher needs to notify the administrator and a member of the SIT team. The student must be interviewed by the SIT team by phone or in teams before the end of the school day. The parent must also be contacted.
Please take any threat of self harm very seriously.
