Becoming a fellow of the NZMS

The Society has set up an accreditation scheme which recognises Fellows, Accredited Members, and Graduate Members of the NZMS.

Applications are considered by the Accreditation Committee, set up by the NZMS Council.

Members’ applications are due on 1 June 2022. Application forms are available for download. For the Fellowship use the Fellowship application. For Accredited Member or Graduate Member recognition, please use the Accreditation application. If you would like to be considered or would like to nominate someone, please follow the instructions on the appropriate form and send it by email to the NZMS President, Prof David Bryant. Submissions should state clearly that they are for NZMS Accreditation.

The fees are: Accredited member $100, and Graduate member $50. These are one-off fees. From December 4, 2017 there is no fee for Fellows.

The classes of accreditation are given by Article IV of the NZMS Constitution.

Qualifications required for Graduate Members

A Graduate Member shall have completed a degree or diploma at a recognised university or other tertiary institution, the studies for which shall include mathematics as a major component, and shall be currently employed or occupied in the development, application or teaching of mathematics.

Qualifications required for Accredited Members

An Accredited Member shall have completed a postgraduate degree in mathematics at a recognised university or other tertiary institution, or shall have equivalent qualifications, and shall have been employed for the preceding three years in a position requiring the development, application or teaching of mathematics.

Criteria for Fellowship (effective 3 December 2018)

1. Shall be a Member of the NZMS.

2. Shall have had the qualifications of an Accredited Member for a period in excess of three years.

3. Shall have satisfied criteria (3.1 or 3.2 or 3.3 or 3.4) and 3.5:

3.1. Have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the mathematical sciences;

3.2. Have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the profession of mathematical scientist;

3.3. Have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the teaching and learning of the mathematical sciences;

3.4. Have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the application of mathematical sciences;

3.5. Have made a substantial and sustained contribution to the NZ mathematics community.
