DSE Certification Guide 2026: DevSecOps Essentials Exam, Training, Cost

The DSE Certification, officially EC-Council DevSecOps Essentials (D|SE), is a beginner-friendly credential covering secure application development, DevOps, DevSecOps, application security, CI/CD pipelines, and related tools. No previous IT or cybersecurity work experience is required. The current 112-55 exam contains 75 multiple-choice questions, lasts 2 hours, and is proctored. DSE includes hands-on labs and a capstone project and can provide a foundation before progressing to the advanced EC-Council Certified DevSecOps Engineer (ECDE) program.

What Is DSE Certification?

The DSE Certification stands for DevSecOps Essentials, an entry-level EC-Council program designed to teach the fundamentals of integrating security into application development and DevOps workflows. The central idea behind DevSecOps is simple: security should not be something a team checks only shortly before deployment. Security considerations should be incorporated throughout planning, coding, building, testing, releasing, deploying, operating, and monitoring. DevSecOps Essentials is suitable for students, recent graduates, career changers, developers, administrators, engineers, project professionals, and people with little or no cybersecurity experience. This makes DSE different from an advanced DevSecOps certification intended for experienced application-security or DevOps engineers.

That distinction is important because DSE and ECDE are separate credentials.

What Does the DevSecOps Essentials Course Cover?

The DevSecOps course introduces candidates to the relationship between development, operations, and security rather than immediately expecting advanced engineering ability. Candidates learn application-development fundamentals, application security, DevOps principles, DevSecOps concepts, DevSecOps management tools, code and CI/CD tools, and secure pipeline concepts. The course also includes practical labs and a capstone project so candidates can apply the concepts instead of learning only through theory.

Application Development Fundamentals

DevSecOps makes more sense when candidates first understand how applications are developed.

The DSE curriculum introduces application-development methodologies, architectures, development lifecycles, testing, quality assurance, monitoring, maintenance, and support.

This foundation helps candidates understand where security controls belong.

For example, finding an input-validation weakness during design or automated testing is generally easier and less expensive than discovering the same problem after a production system has already been compromised.

Application Security Fundamentals

Application security is one of the core building blocks of DevSecOps training and certification.

Candidates learn why software vulnerabilities appear, how development decisions affect security, and why security requirements must be considered throughout the software development lifecycle.

This includes understanding the relationship between secure development, testing, configuration, vulnerabilities, and risk.

DSE is not intended to turn a beginner into a senior application-security engineer. Instead, it develops the vocabulary and foundational knowledge needed to participate effectively in secure development workflows.

Understanding DevOps vs DevSecOps

DevOps focuses on collaboration and automation between software-development and operations teams so organizations can deliver changes more efficiently.

DevSecOps extends this model by making security a shared responsibility throughout the lifecycle.

A traditional process might look like:

Develop → Build → Test → Deploy → Security Review

A DevSecOps-oriented workflow aims to integrate security much earlier:

Plan → Secure Design → Code → Security Testing → Build → Deploy → Monitor → Improve

The objective is not to slow development by introducing more approvals.

Well-designed DevSecOps processes automate appropriate security checks so developers receive useful feedback while they are still working on the code.

This is one of the key concepts candidates should understand rather than simply memorizing DevSecOps terminology.

CI/CD and Security Automation

CI/CD pipelines are central to modern software delivery. Continuous Integration allows developers to integrate code changes frequently while automated systems build and test the application. Continuous Delivery or Continuous Deployment extends automation toward release and production environments. A secure CI/CD pipeline can incorporate activities such as source-code scanning, dependency checks, secrets detection, configuration analysis, container scanning, testing, and deployment controls. The DSE program introduces candidates to the DevSecOps toolchain and the use of tools within CI/CD pipelines. A beginner should focus less on memorizing dozens of product names and more on understanding where each type of security control belongs in the pipeline and what problem it solves.

Why Hands-On Labs Matter for DSE

DevSecOps is difficult to learn entirely through slides. Candidates need to understand how development and security tools interact in realistic workflows. The DSE program includes practical lab exercises and a capstone project designed to help candidates apply the material rather than only watch lectures. During preparation, focus on what happens when a security control identifies a problem. Ask whether the issue should block the pipeline, produce a warning, be assigned to a developer, or be accepted according to organizational risk policy. That type of reasoning becomes useful later when progressing toward more advanced dev sec ops certification pathways.

DSE Certification Cost

The total cost of earning the DSE Certification can vary depending on the training package, region, taxes, discounts, and delivery method.

Candidates should check whether their package includes:

• Self-paced training

• eCourseware

• Practical labs

• Capstone project

• Examination voucher

• Access duration

When comparing providers, do not look only at the headline price. A lower-cost package may not include the exam or lab environment, while another option may bundle all required learning resources.

DSE vs EC-Council Certified DevSecOps Engineer

One of the most important distinctions is that DSE is not the same credential as ECDE.

Main Goal

Build DevSecOps foundations

Develop professional DevSecOps engineering skills

The EC-Council Certified DevSecOps Engineer program goes much deeper into DevSecOps implementation, security automation, cloud environments, CI/CD security, and engineering practices.

DSE can therefore serve as a foundation before moving toward ECDE.

Is DSE the Best DevSecOps Certification for Beginners?

There is no universal best DevSecOps certification because the right credential depends on experience and career goals. For someone with little or no IT experience, DSE has a clear advantage because it is designed as an introductory program and does not require previous cybersecurity employment. For an experienced DevOps engineer already working with Kubernetes, containers, cloud platforms, infrastructure as code, security testing, secrets management, and CI/CD pipelines, an entry-level DSE course may be too basic. An advanced program such as ECDE or another specialized cloud-native security certification may provide greater value. The useful question is therefore not "Which certification is best?" but "Which certification matches my current skill level and next job role?"

Who Should Consider DSE Certification?

The DSE pathway can be suitable for students, graduates, developers, testers, IT administrators, application administrators, junior security professionals, cloud beginners, engineers, architects, risk professionals, and career changers. It may also help project managers and technical professionals who need to understand how security requirements affect application delivery without becoming full-time developers. Someone pursuing a future role as a certified DevSecOps professional should view DSE as a foundation rather than the final destination. Practical engineering roles generally require additional experience with source control, scripting, Linux, cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD systems, infrastructure as code, security testing, and application-security tools.

What Should Good DevSecOps Training Include?

Good DevSecOps training and certification should combine concepts with implementation. Candidates should learn how applications move from development to production, how CI/CD pipelines work, where security controls fit, and what happens when those controls identify risk. A strong course should introduce secure coding principles, source-code analysis, dependency security, secrets management, container security, cloud security, automated testing, monitoring, and policy enforcement. The goal should be to understand the full lifecycle. A candidate should be able to explain why a particular security check belongs during development rather than after release. That kind of reasoning is more valuable than memorizing tool names.

How to Prepare for the DSE Exam

Use a structured study process rather than rushing directly into mock questions.

First, learn the application-development lifecycle and basic security concepts.

Then understand the difference between DevOps and DevSecOps.

Study how security fits into development and deployment workflows.

Learn the purpose of CI/CD pipelines and common tool categories.

Complete every available hands-on lab.

Finish the capstone project without relying only on step-by-step memorization.

Review weak areas using legitimate practice questions.

Complete timed practice before attempting the proctored exam.

When reviewing practice questions, focus on the reasoning.

If you choose the wrong security control, determine whether you misunderstood the development stage, the risk, or the purpose of the tool.

Common DevSecOps Concepts to Understand

Candidates should understand the idea of shift-left security, which moves appropriate security checks earlier in the development process. They should also understand continuous security testing, automation, feedback loops, shared responsibility, secure software development, and risk-based decision-making. Another important concept is that DevSecOps does not eliminate security specialists. Instead, it creates stronger collaboration between developers, operations professionals, security teams, architects, and governance functions. Security experts still provide specialized knowledge, but developers and operations teams become more involved in building and maintaining secure systems.

DSE and Cloud Security

Modern software is frequently deployed to cloud platforms, containers, serverless environments, or distributed architectures. That makes cloud knowledge increasingly important for DevSecOps professionals. Candidates should understand that security responsibilities change depending on the deployment model. For example, a cloud provider may secure the underlying infrastructure, but customers remain responsible for areas such as identities, permissions, configuration, code, secrets, and data protection. Learning these boundaries helps candidates understand why DevSecOps extends beyond application code alone.

Career Value of DSE Certification

The DSE Certification can be useful for people who want to move toward DevSecOps, cloud security, application security, software development, IT operations, or cybersecurity roles. It can help beginners build a structured understanding of how development, operations, and security work together. However, certification alone does not create professional-level engineering skill. Employers may also evaluate practical experience with scripting, Linux, cloud platforms, containers, Git, CI/CD tools, security scanners, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems. The strongest approach is to combine certification with practical projects. For example, build a simple CI/CD pipeline and integrate source-code scanning, dependency checking, secrets detection, and deployment controls. That project can demonstrate much more than exam knowledge alone.

Build a DevSecOps Career Beyond the Certificate

The DSE Certification provides a useful entry point, but DevSecOps careers depend heavily on practical skills. After completing DevSecOps Essentials, start building experience with Git, Linux, scripting, CI/CD pipelines, containers, cloud services, application-security testing, infrastructure as code, secrets management, and monitoring. Then consider progressing toward EC-Council Certified DevSecOps Engineer or another advanced DevSecOps certification that matches your role. The strongest next step is straightforward: use DSE to understand why security belongs throughout software delivery, then build projects where you actually integrate security controls into a CI/CD workflow. That combination of DevSecOps essentials, practical labs, and progressively deeper engineering skills will provide more career value than collecting certificates without implementation experience.
