Title: Toxicology: Connections to Chemistry Content

Explore toxicology as a meaningful entry point for teaching core chemistry concepts. Using the Hudson River Superfund site and the regional use and disposal of PFAS as real-world contexts, participants will examine how toxicology connects to classroom content such as units, concentration, and mixtures. The session will also introduce key toxicology topics—like dosage, absorption, and ecological impact—and demonstrate how these can enhance student understanding of both human and environmental health. Participants will receive example lesson and unit plans and will be encouraged to reflect on how toxicology can foster critical thinking, relevance, and engagement in the science classroom.

How can we leverage the Desmos platform, its resources, and mathematical tools alongside Peter Liljedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) framework to create learning environments aligned with Alan Schoenfeld’s Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) framework?
In this interactive session, participants will engage in rich mathematical exploration and collaborative dialogue centered on designing BTC- and TRU-aligned classrooms. Together, we'll examine ways to enhance specific Desmos lessons and activities through intentional teacher moves and strategic planning. This session is tailored for educators working with grades 6–12 mathematics.

Interested in having rich student led discussions in your math classrooms? The Socratic Seminar is one way for students to engage in authentic discussions, take ownership of sharing their opinions, and build relationships with each other through conversation. During this single session, math teachers will get to explore different adaptations of the traditional Socratic Seminar and examine them under the lens of the TRU Framework. Time will also be given at the end of the session to brainstorm how to implement the different models shared in your own classroom and get started!

Description of Session:
This session is designed for current K–12 STEM teachers who are interested in guiding pre-service student teachers through their classroom journey. Panelists will share their experience and strategies for supporting pre-service teachers across the three NYSMTP Knowledge Domains: Knowledge of STEM Content, Knowledge of Pedagogy, and Knowledge of Students, Their Families, and Their Communities. Attendees will also explore methods for balancing classroom support with professional development, while helping pre-service teachers build confidence in their instructional practices. Walk away with practical strategies and actionable advice for fostering growth and ensuring the success of future STEM educators. Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions, as each panel will feature different educators sharing a range of insights, experiences, and strategies.
Due to high interest from panelists, we have scheduled two pre-service panels to allow for broader participation and richer conversation.
The only difference between the Monday and Tuesday sessions would be the Moderator and panelists; the structure and focus remains the same.
