Hi all. It is about 10 weeks until our annual First Responder Course on the morning of Thursday, August 29, 2019. For those who don’t know, this is a 3-hour Sim, Standardized Patient, and Workshop based course geared toward all 100+ MS1s in their first month at medical school. For many of them, it is also their first hands-on clinical experience.
It was a big success last year and I’m looking forward to running it again this year. I would love to have your help in leading short 30-min workshops with the students. Please reach out if interested! It’s great fun and a learning experience for all. My email is juz9013@med.cornell.edu. Thank you.

COLUMBIA
From Dr. Dan Egan:
Hi everyone. EMDocs.net is a very active FOAMed site with a large audience. One of my former residents is now the editor for their procedure series and they are looking for resident authors. You can look at the series here: http://www.emdocs.net/tag/procedure
If you are interested in this, think of a procedure topic you’d like to do and let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Anthony. They do want a faculty mentor as part of the writing, which we can help facilitate as well unless you identify someone already.
This is a great opportunity to do some scholarly writing. Although it does not lead to a journal manuscript, I think we all recognize the value of well-written FOAM content.
From Dr. Nick Gavin:
Hi all. Rita has begun stocking 22 Fr PEG tubes in the main supply room across from X-ray. Hoping this will assist patients who need replacements. Thanks to Cody Larsen for raising this as an issue. Let us know how it’s going with this. Thank you Rita!
High-Sensitivity Troponins:
Approximately 1 month away from the new roll-out. Please look at the attached link to familiarize yourself with the 0-1 hour protocol. Main points: Draw a troponin at hour 0 and hour 1. Two guidelines for admission: troponin positive (sex-specific) or if troponin velocity increases by greater than 2.5 even if below sex-specific cut-off.

Clean Supply Rooms:
The supply rooms are being reorganized to make them more user friendly with daily needs. The Adult ED has 6 clean supply rooms. Part of this project is a lot of pre-work: analyzing par levels, determining which rooms items should go in, and deciding if we should delete or add products to the rooms. If interested in helping, please email the chief account and we can get you in contact with Eitan Sufian, the project manager.
From Dr. Ellen Sano:
Attached are the photos of the Adult Research Interns for summer 2019. Please welcome them!
Many of them are already accomplished in other fields including:nursing, engineering, the military and music and the arts. They are all preparing to apply to medical school. They all have chosen this volunteer site because they are exposed to many types of medicine please allow them to shadow you.
The research Interns are an important part of the research program in the adult ED they have gone through extensive training and are here as an educational program. They provide important research assistance for both funded and unfunded research in our department. They are or will be involved in many studies including the troponin study and several survey based research project by adult faculty . They are an important resource that anyone member of the Emergency department can use . They can also help get supplies assist as any of the blue jacketed volunteers but cannot do direct patient care.
If you have a research project you think the Research Interns can assist with please let me know.
