To raise a generation of confident, curious, and purpose-driven children who believe they can rise above their circumstances and create better futures for themselves and their communities.
Big Light is a community-based mindset and foundational learning program developed by Nyikal Organization in Kisumu County, Kenya. The program serves children in ECDE through Grade 3 (ages 3–9), particularly those living in informal settlements and vulnerable households.
We believe that before children can transform their circumstances, they must first transform the way they think about themselves and their potential.
Big Light combines foundational literacy with mindset development, financial education, and experiential learning to nurture confident, resilient, and lifelong learners.
Children growing up in poverty often internalize limiting beliefs that shape how they learn, dream, and engage with the world.
We believe that when children experience positive identity formation, engaging learning experiences, and practical life skills from an early age, they develop the confidence, curiosity, and resilience needed to thrive academically and beyond.
By strengthening children's internal beliefs while building foundational learning skills, Big Light aims to interrupt cycles of generational poverty through transformed thinking.
Big Light integrates play-based learning, storytelling, guided reflection, and 30-day mental transformation curriculum to improve memory retention, comprehension, confidence, and participation.
The program intentionally combines visual, auditory, and experiential learning methods, allowing children with different learning styles to succeed while reinforcing literacy, creativity, discipline, and positive identity.
Children learn by:
Seeing
Hearing
Doing
Reflecting
Repeating
This multi-sensory approach strengthens both learning outcomes and long-term retention.
Bible-based and culturally relevant stories that teach values, resilience, leadership, and life lessons while strengthening listening comprehension and vocabulary.
Drawing, coloring, crafts, and creative activities that reinforce learning, improve memory, and encourage self-expression.
Interactive games that make learning enjoyable while strengthening literacy, numeracy, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Children discuss and explain what they learned in their own words, improving communication skills, critical thinking, and comprehension.
Daily affirmations and mindset activities help children replace limiting beliefs with confidence, purpose, and self-belief. We have a curated 30-day mental transformation curriculum that we use.
Children learn to say things such as:
I am capable.
I can learn.
I am creative.
I have a purpose.
My future is bright.
Big Light introduces age-appropriate financial literacy concepts that lay the foundation for lifelong economic empowerment.
Children learn:
Saving
Investing
Delayed gratification
Responsible spending
Entrepreneurship
Wealth-building habits
The goal is to cultivate a mindset of stewardship, opportunity, and abundance rather than scarcity.
Big Light is not traditional classroom teaching.
It is an experience-based learning model that intentionally develops both the child and the learner.
The program simultaneously strengthens:
Foundational literacy
Confidence and self-expression
Memory and comprehension
Curiosity and creativity
Positive identity
Financial thinking
Character and values
Participation and leadership
Rather than asking children to memorize information, Big Light helps them understand, apply, and internalize what they learn.
