Mission
New York University's Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media is excited to announce the opening of its NYC Disco Archive, which seeks to collect and preserve material pertaining to New York's City disco scene in the late 1960s and 1970s. The archive will give music scholars, history scholars, and disco fans the opportunity to explore how disco revolutionized dancing, nightlife, fashion, music, and culture in New York City, the United States, and globally. The archive aims to present the social politics of the era, with a particular focus on how minorities and the LGBT founded and developed disco music in NYC. The archive is also dedicated to understanding disco's influence on today's music and culture.
Scope
The New York University NYC Disco Archive has an extensive collection with a wide range of materials including film, photography, and fashion design and sketches. The collection features artists and DJs such as Larry Levon, Sharon White, Gloria Gaynor, Chic, Grace Jones, Loletta Holloway and includes material and performances from NYC disco clubs such as The Loft, Paradise Garage, and Studio 54. The archive also preserves artists' interviews, posters, and other disco memorabilia.
