History of “The Buckeye”
Every football team has a tradition. Clemson has Howards Rock, Florida rubs the Gator Head, and Notre Dame slaps the "Play Like A Champion Today" sign as the exit their locker room. Well here at Nelsonville-York, we have an Iconic tradition as well, as every Buckeye (player and coach) touches THE BUCKEYE as they enter Boston Field.
In October of 1984 one of Nelsonville-York’s most iconic and beloved symbols was created: “The Buckeye.”
NY seniors Brian Bullock and Jay Kline accidentally created the Buckeye from a 30 gallon cardboard container and several bags of concrete. Brian was the main designer and shaped the wet concrete like a sculptor. The NY art department and (Teacher) Clayton Parker painted it and legendary Coach Dave Boston Sr. liked it so much he had it placed in front of the stadium. It remained there for several years until Coach Kevin Meade had it moved into its present position at the entry gates of Boston Field.
For 30 years ALL Nelsonville-York football players touch The Buckeye as they enter and exit Boston Field. It serves as a reminder to the Tradition, Pride and commitment players have in the Buckeye football program. An illustrious history indeed!
In 2024 “The Buckeye,” after 40 years was repaired and repainted by Sofiea W., Leo G., Mieke M., and Samiah W. in hopes that it will last another 40 years!!!
