Quality Matters is an organization dedicated to ensuring the quality of online instruction. They do so by using a research-based and frequently updated set of standards to review online courses with a team of three reviewers. Northwest-Shoals is in the process of certifying 50 (currently at 25) of our online courses through QM. Further, we will be using a subset of the QM standards to conduct future internal reviews of our online courses. Below, you will find a variety of resources related to the QM standards, review process, and online learning in general.
The list of standards is a great reference tool for anyone teaching an online course. Simply scan the list and ask yourself whether or not you meet each standard. Pick 2 or 3 that you don't meet, and revise your course a little each semester until you have met them all.

Quality online courses are well-organized and easy to navigate. Anyone who has ever switched from an iphone to an android or vice versa understands the necessity of designing a platform which provides a good user experience. That feeling you get when you are first learning a new phone, laptop, application, etc. is the same feeling your students encounter when first logging in to your online course. We want students engaging and grappling with the content of the course, not the course itself.
