Seminar

Prof Chiew Yee Meng (Nanyang Technological University) will be presenting the talk "Propeller Jet Induced Flow Field and Scour"

Abstract:

Marine transport forms the backbone of the growing international market and globalization since the Age of Discovery. Today, it is still undergoing continuous change to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of world trade. The continuing surge in engine capacity to allow bigger vessels to carry more cargoes to satisfy demands has resulted in bigger propellers and therefore higher jet flow. This research investigation, which includes a detailed experimental program, explores both propeller-jet flow behaviour and the resulting scour hole development near and away from port structures. The aim is to provide a means to accurately estimate long-term scour depth and to provide a cost-effective scour countermeasure to ensure the integrity of the port facility.

Seminar

Dr Liang Hui (TCOMS) will be presenting the talk "Hypersingular integral equations for wave and impermeable/perforated shell structure interactions"

Abstract:

In the field of offshore renewable energy, impermeable plates are used as underwater lenses to amplify the wave amplitude, and perforated plates can harness wave energy as a power takeoff device. Within the framework of the linear potential-flow theory, the water wave scattering by impermeable and perforated horizontal plates is investigated in the present study, and both circular and elliptical plates are considered. The hypersingular integral equation is constructed to model the interaction between water waves and plates of small thickness. For wave scattering by impermeable plates with the focus on wave amplification, wave interference effects due to multiple plates can be utilized to achieve large wave amplification. For perforated plates used for harnessing wave energy, deploying an array of elliptical plates is promising if the deployment line coincides with the major axis and the incident wave propagates along the minor axis. The study gives insight into harnessing energy from water waves by horizontal plates.
