South China Sea Tsunami Workshop

SCSTW10

Dear all,

On behalf of the organizing committee, I’d like to draw your attention to the 2018 South China Sea Tsunami Workshop 10.

The South China Sea Tsunami Workshop (SCSTW) was initiated in 2007 by an internationally recognized tsunami expert, Professor Philip L.-F. Liu at Cornell University, U.S.A. (Now is a Distinguished Professor and serves as Vice President for Research and Technology at the National University of Singapore). Each year, tsunami experts from the SCS region and the world gather together, update new discoveries and share new understandings of the tsunami related hazards in the South China Sea and worldwide. In the past ten years, the topics of SCSTW have expanded from the tsunami hydrodynamics to very diverse disciplines. Our knowledge evolves over time in light of new observational data, development of process-based models, and more importantly, the collective effort made by multi-disciplinary researchers. Yet challenges remain as our understanding about the tsunamigenic sources in the South China Sea region is still very limited. Large uncertainties exist in the tsunamigenic potential of all the sources, including earthquakes from the Manila subduction zone and other faults, submarine landslides, and volcanic activity, etc. This year, we will discuss these challenges and other relevant issues.

2018 also marks the 10-year anniversary of the South China Sea Tsunami Workshop. This workshop will take place in the Garden City-Singapore, co-organized by Earth Observatory of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore.

Here in Singapore we warmly welcome you to join us for this exciting event. At this workshop, a wide range of tsunami-related topics will be covered:

· Seismology, tectonics of regional and basin-wide scales

· Observation and simulations of submarine landslide

· Tsunami Forecasting tools and skills

· Tsunami-like wave dynamics: Propagation and coastal evolvement

· Tsunami hazard assessment and mitigation;

· Seismic and tsunami observations and post-event surveys

· New technology potential for tsunami warning
