Indigenous students pursuing nursing education often encounter challenges with academic preparation that can impede their success in the program. As an academic coach and Instructor with Mahkwa omushki kiim: Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education (PINE), my objective is to support Indigenous students to discover individualized study strategies that foster their academic success.
I work as a nurse in the role of Coordinator & Academic Coach for Mahkwa omushki kiim: Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education (PINE). PINE is a support unit and community at the University of Manitoba, College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. Within this role I also an am Instructor for NURS1500: Preparation for Professional Nursing Education In which I provide foundational strategies for students to be successful In gaining entry to the nursing program, and support them as an academic coach throughout their nursing educational journey.
My nursing background involves 15 years working in northern nursing stations, First Nations community health and communicable disease control for First Nations communities regionally and nationally. I entered academia close to 7 years ago in my current role and bring a great deal of experience and knowledge to support Indigenous learners and continue to learn from them as well every day.
