I will share some tips on how to survive your PhD here. There are a lot of things that can contribute to research life. Please be aware that it is a very lonely and isolated journey, although if you are blessed, you would find a bunch of similar souls.
Often, finding a compatible supervisor-supervisee is not straightforward. There is no standard rule of thumbs to follow. What really matters is your determination and ridzk. However, I found this share really endearing and helpfull especially if this is the first time you are looking for a research supervisor (PhD/Master).

Dear New PhD Student,
This is an exciting time for you as you embark on your journey towards a doctoral degree. As your supervisor I thought I should write to welcome you and give you a few handy hints that may help us both to survive this voyage of discovery intact. We both have much to learn. Although we have exchanged emails, we do not know each other well. As with all new relationships we have both been at pains to display the good in us, and hide the crazy.
