I will share some tips on how to survive your PhD here. There are a lot of things that can contribute to research life. Please be aware that it is a very lonely and isolated journey, although if you are blessed, you would find a bunch of similar souls.
Often, finding a compatible supervisor-supervisee is not straightforward. There is no standard rule of thumbs to follow. What really matters is your determination and ridzk. However, I found this share really endearing and helpfull especially if this is the first time you are looking for a research supervisor (PhD/Master).

This is an exciting time for you as you embark on your journey towards a doctoral degree. As your supervisor I thought I should write to welcome you and give you a few handy hints that may help us both to survive this voyage of discovery intact. We both have much to learn.
