At a glance, anatomically, Nukites are rudimentary androids. The main components are a power core, which rests in their chest; various hydralics and servos, to control their limbs and body; a large array of sensors (especially in the head) to give them a good sense of everything around them; and many other small devices that do things such as add fuel, maintain lubrication internally, and detonate when needed.
However, after interacting with a Nukite for even a small amount of time, it becomes immediatley clear that they have a very advanced sense of self awareness and personality, each nukite being vastly different than the previous one. The answer to that anomaly resides in their core.
The Core
The core of a nukite seems relatively simple at first glance. It is a large sphere of uranium-238 or plutonium-239, with several holes in it. However, upon a cross sectional view, the magic is revealed. Bonded to the outer shell is a layer of a gel-like foam. This foam is able to form patterns similar to the connections neurons form in a living brain when struck with radiation. This foam can additionally return pulses of radiation after being processed through the patterns that form inside of it. This foam functions as the Nukites memory, as well as being capable of doing some thought processing. The foam is separated from the reaction chamber with a layer of coolant, which additionally disperses through the layer of foam. The coolant is able to flow in and out through two channels in the bottom and top of the core, with the temperature gradient helping to create a mild current. The reaction chamber is suspended in the middle of the core with small structural supports. Inside of the core is a small nuclear reactor, with fuel pellets and waste being pushed in and out through a small tunnel in the top of the core. In the center of the core is a computer chip, which effectively acts as the Nukite's logical processing and stimulus processing. The chip is made out of incredibly durable materials, and is intended to function in the heat of the nuclear reactor. The computer chip uses a system called RadAI, which uses electromagnets to divert radiation produced by the core to the neural foam layer, and to receive impulses from it.
In combination, this incredibly advanced heart and brain combination allows Nukites to think in a way that is incredibly similar to other living things, but in the end, they are totally artificial.
Other Internal Features
Will hopefully get a better looking version of this someday!
Nukites use a complex series of hydraulics for movement mounted to a lead lined steel frame.
They have a small heavy water generator that replaces fluids around the core and a water tank in which it gets mixed with during the pumping process. They pump system visually looks like breathing from the exterior but is actually a system that moves fluid from around the core to near the surface of ferroflexite to cool it and also to act as an exterior coolant. Nukites do not need to breathe.
Their heads are loaded with sensors of various types.
Their ‘back box’ houses various things. A detonation timer, a ham radio, various test switches and other gizmos.
Their mouth is filled with sharp clamp like teeth for crushing metal like uranium. their throats are filled with grinders to turn the crushed up metal into dust, said grinders can be retracted for maintenance. These materials get mixed with the core to replenish energy. They have a built in radar.
"This act of atomic coitus created a mass sufficient to produce a critical reaction."
-David Samuels of The New Yorker
Nukites have two "Biological" sexes. Male and Female. (more here)
(more here ) The female nukite prints out instructions on how to build a new nukite based on the best combined features of both nukites involved in reproduction. The sex is randomly determined when printed. (more here)
