The Northwestern University Synchronized Skating Team competes at the Open Collegiate level and is part of the Midwestern Section. There are no specific skating test requirements, however, all team members must be enrolled as full-time students at Northwestern University, have their own skates, and be a member of U.S. Figure Skating.
We practice twice a week on Sunday and Tuesday nights at Robert Crown Community Center. Practices consist of both off-ice and on-ice work, coordinated by our team coaches. Additional strength and conditioning workouts are provided weekly.
Our competition season takes place during winter quarter and we attend various local and sectional competitions across the Midwest.
The competitions NUSST attends are subject to change depending on our school calendar and team decisions. Typically, we compete at Synchro Illinois, Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships, and Tri State Synchro.
In addition to competitions, we may perform our program at select Northwestern hockey games, local skating competitions, and various events in the Chicagoland area.
We end the year with the annual NUFSC exhibition in the spring. This is a wonderful opportunity for skaters to perform in a variety of programs, including our competition programs, solos, small group numbers, class routines, and full team performances. This allows us to show off our hard-work, creativity, and growth in front of friends, family, and the Northwestern community.
We hold open house practices during the first week of fall quarter, providing an opportunity for new and returning skaters to join the team. As a no-cut team, we welcome skaters of all skill levels, from those with synchronized skating experience to those trying synchro for the first time. It’s a great way to meet the team, learn more about what we do, and start your skating journey at Northwestern!
