Welcome to all Newcastle & Durham University Trainee Teachers!

Please note that the documents found and shared here exclude Academic Materials, Modules and Assignments, but may include relevant reading materials to support you when completing these.

Most essential documents will also be shared with you via links within your Weekly Training Plan, or directly through email as links, or attachments, but this website will hopefully provide you with easy access to a range of links and resources which you may find useful.

PGCE Course Overview

Please note that this is the Newcastle University version. Module deadlines and a small number of sessions fall on different days and dates for trainees at Durham University, but the basic pattern of activity and the sequence of learning will be the same.

Curriculum Strands

The Curriculum content is divided into 5 Strands, grouping together relevant and linked aspects of the Core Content Framework and the Teachers' Standards. Across the 4 Phases of your development, we focus on different aspects of these Strands at different times to provide you with a carefully sequenced curriculum which aligns with your school-based activities and the progress we expect you to make.  

Strand One - Establishing an appropriate environment for learning: High Expectations and Managing Behaviour 

Strand Two - Supporting pupils to learn effectively: How Pupils Learn, Classroom Practice and Adaptive Teaching 

Strand Three - Understanding what to teach: Subject and curriculum knowledge 

Strand Four - Monitoring the learning and progress of pupils: Assessment  

Strand Five - Building a professional identity: Professional teacher behaviours
