Some history
Otterburn is a village in Redesdale which earned itself a place in history with the Battle of Otterburn fought on 19 August 1388. This centred on the rivalry between the Percy’s and the Earl of Douglas culminating in the Percys’ defeat by the Scots under the Earl. Douglas himself was killed and Sir Henry Percy captured. Many of the casualties from the battle are thought to have been buried in the churchyard of St Cuthbert’s Elsdon. The traditional sight of the battle is commemorated by the Percy Cross, the head of which is said to be now lying in the porch of St John’s Church.
