Established in 1936, the NTU Insect Specimen Museum is one of the most historically significant entomological collections in Taiwan. It houses numerous rare and invaluable specimens, including many over a century old. The museum's holdings trace back to the early 19th century and include specimens collected during the Japanese colonial period and post-war years. Since the 1980s, with support from the National Science Council, faculty and students from the Department of Entomology have conducted extensive surveys of Taiwan’s insect fauna, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of specimens.
Today, the museum holds over 330,000 specimens, which are categorized into four types based on their primary purpose: type specimens, research specimens, teaching specimens, and exhibition specimens. These collections serve as a vital scientific and cultural asset for the study and development of entomology in Taiwan.
The museum’s holdings primarily include specimens from the following insect orders:
Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Blattodea (cockroaches), Orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets), Dermaptera (earwigs), Plecoptera (stoneflies), Hemiptera (true bugs), Neuroptera (lacewings), Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies), Mecoptera (scorpionflies), Trichoptera (caddisflies), Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), and Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps).
(Note: The collection room is accessible only to qualified entomological researchers by application.)
Researchers who wish to access the collection room for entomological studies are requested to contact the museum director:
