Open Air Sensitization Programme on
River Bank Erosion and Its Impact on Riparians
NSS Volunteers need to be always alert and aware of the natural, social and cultural environment of their locality. River Bank Erosion is one of the major problems of Malda district. The life of riparian people is greatly affected every year by bank erosion. To help volunteers to witness and understand this problem and feel the way of life of the people, an open air class was organized at Gopalpur village on the banks of the river Ganges.
Invited Speakers:
1. Dr. Narayan Chandra Shaw, Associate Professor of Department of Bengali of Malda College shed light on the mythological, cultural, economic and social importance of Ganga River.
2. The nature of river bank erosion and the impact of Farakka Barrage on the flow of the Ganges were discussed by Dr. Mosfudar Rahaman, Department of Geography.
3. People’s Representative Mr. S.K. Sakiruddin; Local residents Enamul Hoque and S.K. Roni and Israful Hoque explained the life and livelihood of riparian people to the volunteers followed by an open discussion with the people whose life have been affected by the bank erosion.

Relief Fund Distribution to Flood Victims
Volunteers reached Hukmatola village of Gopalpur Gram Panchayat with flood relief to stand by the people of Malda who are homeless today due to the erosion of the banks of the Ganga river. NSS volunteers collected donations from all current and former students, teachers and teaching staffs of the college as well as from general public for the last five days to make this program a success.
This effort of the students will not be able to solve the problem of the victims completely but this effort is to convey the message that we are also in their pain, Malda College family is by their side in this trouble.
All the students who actively participated in this program, their life experiences filled with a unique experience today.
