Mu Chapter History

Mu Chapter Charter Day Celebration

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. came to the west through the efforts of Soror Rebecca Murphy Young, formerly a member of Gamma Chapter in Baltimore, MD.  Imbued with the spirit of the sorority, Soror Young laid the foundation for a chapter in Chicago while teaching with Oneida Cockrell at the Garden Apartments Nursery School.  Soror Mamie Brown, a member of Epsilon Chapter and the Regional Director, organized Mu Chapter in February 23, 1931.

Rebecca Young was the first Basileus. The Charter Members were: Oneida Clark Cockrell, Mary Brown, Ida Mae Griffin Cress, Dorothy Curry, Katie Ellis Moore, Nan Hawthorne Pierce, Willie Hicks Scarborough, Emma Arnold Thornton, Margaret Watts, Kathleen Williams, and Gail Burnett Willis.
