Fighting for the Hutchinsons
Over the past week, you may have seen news coverage about Hutchinson Acres and the province’s decision to terminate their land-use agreement.
At the centre of this story are Chris and Anna Hutchinson. Small business owners, long-term maple producers, and pillars of their community.
For years, they’ve built a livelihood rooted in the forest, supporting local families, contributing to the rural economy, and creating a business that depends on keeping trees standing.
This situation goes beyond a single lease. It brings up bigger questions about how public land is managed, what kinds of forest use are supported, and what values are guiding those decisions. And, at the heart of it are real impacts, on people, on communities, and on the future of our forests.
This story deserves to be told properly. We’ve been taking the time to listen, to ask questions, and to understand the full picture before speaking on it.
We’ve also been seeing the support that’s already building around this. From people sharing the story, to reaching out, and standing behind Chris and Anna. It's been encouraging to see how many people care about this and are paying attention.
On Monday, May 11th, we’ll be launching a 7 part series:
Sugar Bush for Life: Fighting for the Hutchinsons
This campaign will focus on sharing the full story, breaking down key issues, and helping people understand what’s at stake for everyone, especially the Hutchinsons. Not just for one operation, but for small businesses, rural communities, and the future of forest use in Nova Scotia.
