Aggressive behaviors are considered generally maladaptive because they can harm others. However, they also sometimes serve an adaptive function of protecting oneself from threats. I am investigating the psychological mechanisms that underlie and develop such aggression through questionnaires/surveys and experiments. My long-term goal is to understand why people act aggressively and explore how we can get along with it in our daily lives.
Interests: reactive aggression, hostile cognition, social exclusion, emotions, facial expressions, cultural differences, eye blinking, and more.
ヒトの攻撃行動は、他者を傷つけうるという意味で社会的に不適応なものですが、時として、自身を脅威から守るなどの適応的な機能も果たします。このような特徴を持つ攻撃行動が、どのような心理的メカニズムに支えられており、どのように発達するのかについて、アンケート調査や実験的手法を用いて検討しています。この検討を進めることで、なぜヒトは傷つけ合うことがあるのか・日常生活の中でそれとどう向き合い付き合っていくべきかについて考えていきたいと思っています。
関心ごと: 反応的攻撃性、敵対的認知、社会的排除、感情、表情、文化差、瞬目など。
Reactive aggression refers to aggressive behavior that occurs in response to some threats and provocations caused by a preceding event. It often involves emotions like anger and a retaliatory motive toward the person.
One antecedent that triggers reactive aggression is the interpretation of being targeted with hostility (threat) by others. For example, imagine playing catch with two other people (A and B). If A and B suddenly stop throwing the ball to you, many people would interpret their actions as hostile and become more likely to behave aggressively toward them.
Yamamoto et al. (2025; Experiment 2) demonstrated that the ability to interpret such behavior as hostile develops between the ages of 4 and 6. Yamamoto & Moriguchi (2025) showed that aggressive behavior toward individuals who stop throwing the ball is observable in 5- to 6-year-olds.
Furthermore, individuals with high levels of everyday reactive aggression are known to exhibit a cognitive bias: they tend to attribute hostility to others (i.e., they are more likely to interpret others as having hostile intentions toward them). For instance, if someone (Person A) accidentally steps on their foot while walking down the street, individuals with high reactive aggression are more prone to interpret that A intentionally stepped on them with hostile intent, compared to those with lower reactive aggression. Consequently, they are more likely to behave aggressively toward A for self-defense or retaliation.
Regarding this cognitive mechanism, Yamamoto et al. (2023) conducted a study with Japanese children ranging from preschool to elementary school age. The study revealed a weak positive correlation between the bias to attribute hostility to others and aggression. Additionally, hyperactivity was suggested to play a particularly important mediating role in this relationship.
反応的な攻撃とは、何らかの脅威や挑発に対して反応的に起こる攻撃行動のことです。怒りなどの感情を伴ったり、相手への報復的な動機を持っていたりすることが特徴です。
このような反応的な攻撃行動を導く要因のひとつとして、自分が他者から敵意（脅威）を向けられていると感じる状況が挙げられます。たとえば、複数の他者（Aさん・Bさん）とキャッチボールをしているとき、途中から自分にだけボールが回ってこなくなったら、多くの人は、Aさん・Bさんが自分に対して敵対的な意図を持っている（→脅威的）と考え、彼らに向かって攻撃的に振る舞いやすくなることが分かっています。
Yamamoto et al. (2025; 実験2) では、上記のようなキャッチボールの状況において、ボールを回してこなくなった他者を敵対的と評価する力は4-6歳にかけて発達することを示しました。さらに、Yamamoto & Moriguchi (2025) では、特に5-6歳において、そのボールを回してこなくなった他者への攻撃的な反応がみられることを示しました。
日常生活において反応的な攻撃性が高い個人は、その認知的メカニズムとして、他者に敵意を帰属しやすい（≒他者が自分に対して敵意を持っていると捉えやすい）バイアスを持つことが分かっています。たとえば、道を歩いていて誰か（Aさん）に足を踏まれたとき、反応的な攻撃性が高い個人は、そうでない個人よりも、Aさんが自分に対して敵対的な意図を持って踏んだのだと考えやすく、それゆえ、自己防衛や報復を目的に、Aさんに対して攻撃的に振る舞いやすいと考えられています。
この認知的メカニズムに関して、Yamamoto et al. (2023) では、日本の幼児期から児童期のお子さまを対象に調査しました。調査の結果、他者に敵意を帰属しやすいバイアスと攻撃性の間に弱い正の相関がみられました。また、この関連の媒介因子として、多動性が、特に重要な役割を果たしていることが示唆されました。
