The Novicene Period (Latin: "novus", "new"; Greek "καινός" (kainos), "new" [common epochal suffix]) was the geologic time period that lasted from ~3.2 to 40 million years A.D. after the Quaternary-Novicene extinction event caused by humans. From 1-3 ma CE, various species and entire groups of animals went extinct, but this left the surviving species with empty niches to evolve into various different forms and fill. With the absence of humans during the Novicene, life across earth flourished in countless different biomes and environments, from deserts to tundras to massive seas. It was preceded by the Quaternary and succeeded by the Purgocene. (text by hiroizmeh).
This documention of the Novicene is mainly focused on the late Novicene (also known as Teleocene), which is about 30 to 40 million years hence. The world of the Novicene is quite a bit warmer than today's climate, with the average temperature of the world being 17 degrees Celsius. The ice caps are still around but decreased compared to today. The environments are quite similar to today, but there are more saltwater ecosystems due to sea level rise. The tundras of the Novicene are generally ice-free during the summer, but snow fall covers them during the winter. The contintents have moved slightly, but the world still looks similar the world of today. Antarctica and Africa has moved more northward. Africa crashed into Europe, creating a new set of mountains. Antarctica, moving northward, has started to develop coniferous forests, but is mostly tundra and ice caps. Most continents have similar ecosystems to today however.
The main difference from today is that humans have gone extinct or have left the planet to explore other planets. They, however, did kill off various linages in their wake. Several groups of animals, such as elephants, great apes, most cetaceans, rhinoceroses, panthers, sea turtles, most types of coral, various types of fish, and many more, have gone extinct by this time. Still, it wasn't as deadly as other mass extinction, only killing off about 50% of mammals, 25% of birds, 20% of reptiles, 40% of amphibians, 25% of insects, and 30% of all other animals. The world has bounced back and stabilized, and, now, the world is even more biodiverse than several parts of the Earth's history. This biodiversity is mainly due to the fact that several physical barriers between the landmasses, such as oceans and mountains. Every continent has it's own wildlife and ecosystems that are even unique from each other. Even in similar ecosystems, the species that inhabit those ecosystems are completely different.
