WHY:
When you find yourself getting bored with "normal" music Can are where to turn. Their 3 album run of Tago Mago (1971), Ege Bamyasi (1972) and Future Days (1973) are up there with rock's finest moments. If you want to know where Radiohead got a lot of their ideas and inspiration for their soundscapes and off kilter moments then look no further, a cursory listen should confirm as much. But if you want more proof just check out the Norwegian Wood and Inherent Vice soundtracks that Jonny Greenwood has put together that feature 3 tracks.

WHY:
The Captain is the perfect artist if you want to have some fun with two types of friends; firstly those who say they like all types of music, and secondly those friends who pride themselves on liking "difficult" music. The challenge I have for both types is simply to listen to "Trout Mask Replica" all the way through without a break. I'm not sure anyone has ever managed it. I don't think I have. And I kind of like it! LOL!
Whilst Trout Mask Replica will undoubtedly remain the Captain's calling card, enshrined in the top 100 albums of all time of every music magazine worth its salt, not all his work is quite so out there. Case and point being the fairly straight uptempo blues of "Sure 'Nuff 'n Yes, I Do" from his debut album "Safe As Milk". Whilst there are suggestions of wierdness within the track, particularly it's irresistable jaunty drums, Ry Cooder's masterful slide work make it pershaps the closest the Captain ever came to straight up pop. "Frownland" is included as a simple taster for Trout Mask Replica. It's the albums first track and serves as a great preci of what's to come.
"Low Yo Yo Stuff" marks some kind of return to the Blues form but still one that's uniquely recognisable as the Captain.

WHY:
I should never have liked the Cars. The story of how I came across them should have put me off them for life. I can't remember exactly how old I was ( but I'm guessing around 9 or 10 as the album came out in 1985), and for my birthday I asked for a Sony Walkman and some album or other that I really wanted at the time but have subsequently forgot. And what I got was a Sanyo personal stereo (Sony's poor cousin - looking online it looked exactly like the MG7SP) and The Cars Greatest Hits. At the time I was pretty mortified. I remember having a listen to the album and initially thought it must have been something from my parents era (the 60's) due to the rockabilly riffs. But pretty soon the combination of it being my only tape and posessing some irresistable tunes it won me over!
