Nova SBE PhD Research Group

The Nova SBE PhD Research Group is a weekly student-run seminar at the PhD in Economics | Finance program at Nova School of Business and Economics. This informal seminar offers PhD students a supportive and stimulating environment to share and discuss research in progress, exchange feedback, and explore new ideas.

Presentations may take one of two formats: full presentations (50 minutes) for advanced work in progress or full research papers, and short presentations (25 minutes) for early-stage and ongoing projects, as well as new research ideas.

The group meets primarily in person to foster collaboration, and PhD students across all fields are highly encouraged to attend.

"Climate Shocks, Gender Norms and Labor Supply: Evidence from Egyptian Panel Data"

Abstract:

The increasing frequency and severity of climate shocks have substantial impacts on economic livelihoods, particularly in developing countries. While aggregate impacts of climate shocks have received growing attention, we lack understanding of how gender norms shape labor market responses to these shocks. Existing studies focus predominantly on rural households where adjustment margins for females are limited ex-ante. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing four waves (2006-2023) of the representative Egyptian Labor Market Panel Survey. Egypt provides an ideal setting given its vulnerability to climate shocks and restrictive gender norms. Using temperature deviations prior to the interview date in a panel fixed effects regression, preliminary results find that heat shocks significantly reduce female labor force participation, while leaving wages and household time allocation unchanged.
