Much like my sensibilities in data science and machine learning, my artistic interests lie at the cusp of intersections, building structures underlying a chaotic messy world.
Nowadays, I primarily perform, record, and write on bass guitar with my band Sangriento. Here are some of the significant milestones with the band:
Early 2025: Upcoming album release with Sangriento.
2024 releases with Sangriento:
Wrote and produced MV for「Dispossession」(stream or watch MV here)
Recorded bass for「Destiny」(stream here)
For live performances with Sangriento in 2023-2024: See our press kit or social media.
2019: Full album release
2018: Selected to perform at Baybeats (Esplanade).
2016: EP launch, Tokyo livehouse tour.
2015: Selected for NOISE Singapore by National Arts Council, represented Singapore in Yamaha Asian Beat competition.
Prior to picking up electric bass in 2009, I mainly practiced classical music, primarily in the Chinese Orchestra.
These are some of my other qualifications and notable experiences:
Central Conservatory of Music: guzheng diploma and national top scorer
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music:
Piano grade 8
Violin grade 7
Theory grade 5
Principal musician (guzheng) for the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra; represented the orchestra in Hong Kong
Participation in a wide range of other orchestras and ensembles on various instruments, notably percussion and yangqin.
My earlier orchestral experiences have been a very strong influence in my musical development, in addition to my subsequent Symphonic Metal diet. In the past decade, my music has been biased towards symphonic and progressive rock and metal. The following song, written in 2018 and released in 2019, is a clear example of this trend:
I tend to approach songwriting from a rhythm perspective, influenced by my background in the drumset and ethnic percussion. I often write with the concept of tala (wikipedia link) in mind, as evident in the clip below and on the right:
