Norwegian (norsk) is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Norway, where it is the official language. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Danish was the standard written language of Norway. As a result, the development of modern written Norwegian has been subject to strong controversy related to nationalism, rural versus urban discourse, and Norway's literary history. Historically, Bokml is a Norwegianised variety of Danish, while Nynorsk is a language form based on Norwegian dialects and puristic opposition to Danish.

Along with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a dialect continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional variants. In Norway there are two official languages. Norsk Bokml (literally "book tongue") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). Polls indiate that 86.3% use primarily Bokml as their daily written language, 5.5% use both Bokml and Nynorsk, and 7.5% use primarily Nynorsk.Today, not only is Nynorsk the official language of four of the 19 Norwegian counties, but also of many municipalities in five other counties. NRK, the Norwegian broadcasting corporation, broadcasts in both Bokml and Nynorsk, and all governmental agencies are required to support both written languages. Bokml is used in 92% of all written publications, and Nynorsk in 8% (2000).

This is a list of dictionaries considered authoritative or complete by approximate number of total words, or headwords, included. Figures do not take account of entries with senses for different word classes (such as noun and adjective) and homographs. Although it is possible to count the number of entries in a dictionary, it is not possible to count the number of words in a language.[1][2] In compiling a dictionary, a lexicographer decides whether the evidence of use is sufficient to justify an entry in the dictionary. This decision is not the same as determining whether the word exists.[citation needed]

Carefully edited by experts, the PONS online dictionary includes everyday language, regionalisms as well as specialist language and terminology (for example technical, medical, scientific and legal).

Thanks to the constant updating and revision of content by PONS editors and lexicographers, we guarantee a high-quality, complete and up-to-date dictionary with the best translations. Users can also help to enrich the dictionary with their own contributions. All contributions are checked by language experts before publishing.

Norwegian is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Norway by about 4.7 million people. It is more or less mutually intelligible with Swedish and Danish. There are two official forms of written Norwegian: Bokml (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). Bokml is the form generally used in public media and taught to foreign students. It is based on the language spoken by the urban upper and middle class in East Norway, whereas Nynorsk is based on the dialects and is more common in rural areas. However, a lot of people that use Nynorsk are educated people with an affinity for traditions and culture. They claim that Nynorsk is a richer language which represents more the real Norwegian language, as opposed to Bokml which is based on Danish. Since most public media is in Bokml, most people find it easier to learn: a 2005 poll indicates that 86.3% of Norwegians use primarily Bokml as their daily written language, whereas 7.5% use primarily Nynorsk, and 5.5% use both. Bokml is used in 92% of all written publications and Nynorsk in only 8%, but all governmental agencies are required to support both written languages.
