The school counseling program at Northland School District is guided by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, which helps prepare students for success in three domains: academic, career, and social/emotional development (ASCA, 2019).
Northland school counselors are advocates, leaders, and collaborators who create systemic change by providing equitable educational access and success by connecting our school counseling programs to the district’s mission and improvement plans (ASCA, 2019).
Every student can learn, and every student can succeed
Every student should have access to and opportunity for a high-quality education
Every student should graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary opportunities
Every student should have access to a school counseling program
Effective school counseling is a collaborative process involving school counselors, students, families, teachers, administrators and education stakeholders
School counselors are leaders in the school, district, state and nation
Comprehensive school counseling programs promote and enhance student academic, career and social/emotional outcomes
(ASCA, 2019)
The 36 standards identify the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development (ASCA, 2021). Students should be able to demonstrate these as a result of our school counseling program at Northland School District.
The professional standards outline the mindsets and behaviors that Northland school counselors need to meet the demands of the profession and PK-12 student needs (ASCA, 2019). Northland school counselors are expected to have a professional foundation, implement direct and indirect student services, and use planning in assessment within their work (ASCA, 2019).
The ethical standards specify the behaviors necessary to maintain integrity, leadership and professionalism (ASCA, 2019). They act as a guide for Northland school counselors for decision-making and help standardize practice to protect students and school counselors (ASCA, 2019).
