One of the most popular formats within the 4-H Public Presentation Program. In this type of presentation, youth actively teach the audience how to do something or explain how something works or what something is, using visuals props, or step-by-step actions. Demonstrations typically involve performing a task while speaking (like cooking or crafting), while Illustrated Talks rely more heavily on visuals like posters, slides, or models. Both formats help youth build confidence, practice public speaking, and develop subject matter expertise through hands-on learning and communication.
The Speech category of 4-H Public Presentations allows youth to share their thoughts, opinions, or knowledge on a topic through a prepared, original speech. Unlike Demonstrations or Illustrated Talks, Speeches do not include visuals or props. Instead, the focus is on the speaker's ability to engage the audience using strong organization, compelling content, and effective delivery. This format helps youth develop critical thinking, persuasive communication, and leadership skills.Â
