A Note from the Editors

Dear NORTH readers,

This time last year, we at NORTH were putting together our journal over a plate of nachos at Mike's Place, scribbling our thoughts onto real paper napkins, and trying not to stain any printed out submissions. This year's editing night involved pyjamas, lonely drinks, and a strong internet connection. Despite it all, our team came together in the hopes that we could provide a record of the amazing creative work that HUMS students have made over the past year.

This year we went without a lot of the HUMS traditions that we all love so much — Humsoween, soup days, poetry nights — and yet, we've also seen some of the most incredible submissions that have made us feel more connected to our community than ever before. You have shared your joys, your griefs, and your expressions of longing with us, and we couldn't be more proud.

When we joined the NORTH team in 2017, we didn't know what to expect. Victoria imagined many late nights around a Gutenberg press, sweating over journal production. Maeve thought there would be binders full of spreadsheets and a Miranda Priestly type boss watching over our every decision. There were spreadsheets —but also considerably more beer. What we never could have expected is how close we would all become, and how big of a part NORTH would play in our HUMS experiences.

We have loved being your editors, even when we had to nag you to submit your work, and when we had to change deadlines 3 times a year to make sure we received all your beautiful work. It was all worth it in the end, and we know that Kayla and Erin will breathe some fresh, Gen-Z life into the journal next year.

We hope you enjoy this record of a strange year, and that maybe one day you'll even get a printed copy.
