We are asking the City of Sunnyvale and the applicant to work with the community on a better retail plan for Fair Oaks Plaza and North Sunnyvale.
The community is asking for:
Meaningful fresh food access
A real grocery solution that can support fresh produce, refrigerated goods, pantry staples, and culturally relevant foods.
Functional ground-floor retail
Retail space should be designed so grocery and neighborhood-serving businesses can actually operate there. That means practical layouts, visibility, loading access, adequate ceiling heights, refrigeration capability, and usable storefronts.
A serious plan for local businesses
Existing small businesses and minority-owned businesses should not be treated as an afterthought. The city should help identify ways to retain, relocate, or replace neighborhood-serving businesses within North Sunnyvale.
City leadership, not just market forces
The city should not simply wait and hope the market solves this. North Sunnyvale needs active planning, incentives, standards, and accountability to protect fresh food access.
Long-term investment in North Sunnyvale
The city should look specifically at North Sunnyvale, not just citywide retail vacancy numbers. This area has unique needs and should receive focused attention.
