Team Stecyk is part of the Anchorage Hockey Association’s North Stars competitive program. Our goal is to help every player become a more complete hockey player while developing confidence, teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship, and a lifelong enjoyment of the game.
We follow USA Hockey’s American Development Model, emphasizing age-appropriate training, frequent puck touches, decision-making, small-area games, and an environment that is both challenging and fun.
Our Development Philosophy
TECHNICAL | Developing skating, puck control, passing, shooting, and other individual hockey skills.
TACTICAL | Improving hockey sense, decision-making, positioning, and the ability to recognize game situations.
PHYSICAL | Building speed, fitness, coordination, flexibility, and overall athleticism.
PSYCHOLOGICAL | Developing focus, motivation, confidence, resilience, and a positive response to challenges.
How We Practice
75% — INDIVIDUAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT
Hockey skills, activities, puck touches, and competitive games.
15% — HOCKEY SENSE
Teaching players to read and react through small-area games and constant decision-making.
10% — TEAM SYSTEMS
Introducing age-appropriate team-play concepts without limiting individual development.
Practices should:
Be fun
Require constant decision-making
Challenge the players
Provide plenty of puck touches
Look and feel like the actual game
What Players Will Learn
Players will learn to contribute in every area of the game rather than being restricted to one position. Training will include offensive and defensive responsibilities both with and without the puck.
Areas of emphasis include speed, stopping and starting, changing direction, puck races, flexibility, 1-on-1 and 2-on-1 situations, triangle offense, gap control, protecting the center of the ice, stick-on-puck defense, backchecking, body positioning, and basic defensive-zone coverage.
The goal is not simply to win the next game. It is to develop skilled, intelligent, confident athletes who are prepared for future teams and who continue enjoying hockey throughout their lives.
The Four Roles in Hockey
1. Offense with the puck - F1
Protect the puck, create space, pass, shoot, and make decisions.
2.Offense without the puck - F2 through F5
Get open, support teammates, create passing options, and move into useful space.
3.Defense against the puck - D1
Control the gap, keep a good stick position, apply pressure, and protect the middle of the ice.
4.Defense away from the puck - D2 through D5
Cover opponents, support teammates, communicate, and remain aware of developing threats.
Positions vs. Positioning
Players will learn hockey responsibilities instead of being restricted to one permanent position. Modern hockey requires all five skaters to participate in both offense and defense.
By learning how to read the play, support teammates, protect important areas, and react to changing situations, players develop into more complete and adaptable hockey players.
Teach players how to play the situation—not merely where to stand based on the position written beside their name.
Develop great habits, hockey awareness, and an understanding of all four roles so players can adapt, support one another, and succeed anywhere on the ice.
Learning every position helps players understand the whole game, support their teammates, and become more versatile, intelligent, and complete hockey players.
