North Star offers comprehensive support and embraces a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to the investigation, treatment, and prosecution of reported cases of abuse.
Previously, allegations of child abuse were investigated independently by the various, but necessary agencies involved in such cases. Children were subjected to multiple interviews by well‐intentioned social, legal, medical, mental health, and law enforcement agencies as they tried to address investigative and protective concerns. This process was ineffective and non-victim centered, resulting in duplication of efforts with delayed responses and interventions. We've come a long way since then. Child and Family Advocacy Centers (CACs) and multidisciplinary teams now use a coordinated approach, ensuring cases are investigated without re-traumatizing the child.
Today, we have a CAC in our community: North Star Child and Family Advocacy Center.
At North Star we foster collaboration using a multidisciplinary team approach and ensure
the unique needs of child and vulnerable adult victims are met. We always put the child and family
first. No one agency or individual can successfully manage and investigate a child or vulnerable adult
abuse case, it takes a team working together and in the best interest of children and families.
North Star provides forensic interviews which allow children and vulnerable adults the opportunity to share their experience of abuse in a non-threatening, and legally sound manner while their non-offending caregiver(s) meets with a family advocate.
North Star is a part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) serving families impacted by abuse, consisting of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, child and adult protection workers, physical and mental health care professionals, and family advocates.
While forensic interviews or exams take place at North Star, a family advocate meets with non-offending family member(s) to discuss questions, concerns, and provide resources and referrals. After forensic interviews take place, our families meet with a member of the MDT and family advocate to discuss next steps.
