Stay calm. Do not overreact.
Assure the child that you believe them and they are not in trouble.
Do not pressure the child to tell you more than what they are comfortable with talking about at this time.
Make sure the child understands that the abuse was not their fault.
Let the child know you must tell others what happened in order to help keep them safe.
Let the child know that they did the right thing by telling you and that you are always a person they can talk to.
Seek help from Law Enforcement or Family Services.
In case of an emergency, call 911. In non-emergency situations, call your local county social services to make a report about the abuse.
