Prof. em. Karl (Kalle) Hult
on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
At NordBio II we would like to acknowledge Kalle's important contributions to the field of biocatalysis.
Born in 1944, Kalle graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from KTH in the 1970s before pursuing his PhD in Biochemistry.
Kalle started studying fungal metabolism and secondary metabolism involving ochratoxin A. In the beginning of the 1980s, he founded the Biocatalysis research group, together with Prof Torbjörn Norin from Organic Chemistry at KTH. The group soon built the expertise around lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB). Kalle’s group at KTH welcomed students and scientists from all over the world during the following decades. KTH became the place to go to learn about this fascinating and very useful biocatalyst.
Fundamental science has always been Kalle’s strength, and we are so pleased to still have him as an active scientist on a weekly basis in the department, discussing enzymology, thermodynamics and, not the least, the importance of entropy in enzyme catalysis.
Thank you and Happy Birthday, Kalle!
