This poster was created to discuss the current state of Downtown Younstown. Youngstown was hit particularly hard during the Great Depression and later by de-industrialization. They have yet to recover and continue to lose population. This city is in serious need of new business and ways to attract residents and visitors to live, work and play in Youngstown.
These are the current conditions of the Spring Commons area in Downtown Youngstown
This is the proposed re-development of the Spring Commons area, where we proposed moving the WRTA station across the street and developing a mixed-use residential and commercial district. The streets will be lined with greenery and provide safety and comfort for pedestrians.
This poster illustrates a site design for the intersection of W. 65th Street and Lorain Ave. This area is in need of new mixed-use development that caters to the current residents of the neighborhood. If connections are made between Gordon Square and this area, more people may be drawn to come and spend time here.
This graphic illustrates the different initiatives that I felt were important in restoring this area. Some of these initiatives include: mixed-use infill along the main corridor, new housing opportunities, and beautification of the existing recreation center.
This diagram illustrates the change in density over time of the W. 65th St. and Lorain Ave. area. Following the 1950s, a highway was built which has disconnected the area and density has decreased due to vacancies.
Currently, the trails along MLK are very narrow and not well-maintained. Also, many people feel as though the space is not activated with things to do.
As a group, we proposed widening the trails to 15ft on one side and 8ft on the other. On the 15ft trail, we proposed a fitness trail to be built on the northern part of Rockefeller Park that extends into Gordon Park.
Currently there are a few open spaces in the park that could be activated better with simple amenities.
We proposed, restrooms, picnic tables, a pavilion and grilling stations be implemented in order to activate this space.
