Q&A with Superintendent Chris Reykdal

Week of 4/6- 4/10

Tasks to complete for All Levels:

  1. Many students do not have a personal email address associated with their profile on Skyward. If you don’t have a personal email associated with your account or your personal email is outdated, email our registrar at russells@issaquah.wednet.edu to make sure your email is updated. Make sure to include your full name and the email address you want to add.
  2. Sign-up for my VHL Course. Many of your practice assignments will be added through VHL and you must have an account in order to access them. Follow the instructions to sign up for my VHL class carefully; accessing the 2017 version of Descubre is one part of the instructions that often confuses students.
  3. Access our Microsoft Teams class and turn in your 1st Assignment through Microsoft Teams by the due date (April 20th for A-days and April 21st for B-days).
  4. Start to plan a study schedule for your days after April 20th; we’ve been “off” for a few weeks and transitioning to self-directed studying may be a new challenge for many of you. Read this article on How to Create a Study Schedule.
  5. Finally, if you haven’t yet, reach out to me in some way to check in about Spanish. Completing Task 3 above, turning in assignments, sending me an email or doing any of the optional work assigned (scroll down) since the closure began counts as contact!

Week of 3/30 - 4/3:

All Levels: Check out this video and article on the dance and music of Bachata in the Dominican Republic. If you’d like to do some online VHL work along with it, you can do this activity as well. Here is a tutorial for the Basic side-to-side Bachata step and a video for one of my favorite Bachata songs, Prince Royce, Stand by me.

Spanish 1: There are three areas that I would like you to focus on this week. Try and do at least one of the recommendations for each area.

1. You already know the verb tener (to have) but we haven’t done a lot of practice with how to say I have to (verb). Watch this short tutorial and then choose 1-3 different practice options.

        • a. Write me an email in SPANISH that answers the question, ¿Qué tienes que hacer esta semana? (What do you have to do this week?). Try to list at least 3 things that you have to do, think about also mentioning what other members of your household have to do this week. Use tener + que + infinitive like you saw in the video.
        • b. Do Enrichment 2 on the Spanish 1 Covid 19 School Closure Flipgrid: click on 8 topics to access Enrichment 2. You may need this password to join: libertypatriots2020 And remember, you can also do Lesson 4 Can-Do-Statements through this platform if you haven’t yet finished them.
        • c. Try doing this worksheet that uses the new tener + que + infinitive structure AND has you practice using ir + a + infinitive. It is a 1 page worksheet that includes hints on page 2. Email me a copy if you would like to get it corrected for feedback (still no points in the grade book).

2. Have you been practicing the stem-changing and irregular yo verbs like I recommended last week? These verbs will be important throughout your Spanish career and as you increase your proficiency in using them you will be able to communicate more effectively. If you are ready for more practice, try taking a practice quiz from the 2018-2019 school year and then check your answers (page 2 of the file). If you haven’t done the work from last week, I would suggest doing that as well.

        • Recommendations from week of 3/23-3/27: Many of you need more practice with Stem-Changing Verbs and Irregular Verbs. This Stem-Changing and Irregular Verbs quizlet set will familiarize you with the meaning of them. If you want to practice using the verbs sign up for my VHL class and do these exercises:
          • Stem-Changing Verbs: ¡Inténtalo! / Escoger / Practicar verbos / 1 - Identificar / ¡Inténtalo! (2) / 1 - Completar / 2 - Escoger
          • Irregular Yo Forms: Irregular Yo Form Tutorial / ¡Inténtalo! / Escoger / 1 - Hago muchas cosas / 1 - Describir

3. Did you finish the project about an important person in your life? Would you like to share your project with me and some classmates? Here is a script you can use to share. I’ll host two different Zoom Meetings (Tuesday 3/31 at 11am / Thursday 4/2 at 1pm) in which you can bring your project and share information about your important person. Click the link at the correct time and you can join our meeting. You can also share your project with Enrichment 3 on our Spanish 1 Covid 19 School Closure Flipgrid. You may need this password to join the Flipgrid: libertypatriots2020

Spanish 2: I would like you to focus on Task 1 and Task 2 this week but make sure that you've done some of the work in the previous weeks as well (Task 3).

Task 1: Do you remember how and when to use the imperfect tense? Review these Imperfect Tense Notes and then try these two practice pages on the imperfect and present tense and then check your answers with this key.

Task 2: Once you’ve done the activities in Task 1 you should feel more comfortable writing me an email IN SPANISH with the following information: 3 things that you used to do when school was in session compared to what you do now that we are in quarantine. 3 things that you were going to do in April and how you feel about not getting to do them. Here is my example,

Hola Chicos,

Task 3: Did you do the optional work for Lesson 4? Remember that if you are planning to retake any of the quizzes that the optional work will need to be completed. Here are the Subjunctive Tareas from Lesson 4 if you would like to complete them. These are the Lesson 3 optional assignments.

Week of 3/23-3/27 Email me at noona@issaquah.wednet.edu with any questions.

Here are your recommendations for this week. Remember, none of this work will go into the grade book but I tried to be thoughtful in choosing activities that will help your proficiency, allow for some student interaction, and prepare you even better for upcoming lessons. I will continue to accept late work through email (see week 3/16-3/20).

All Levels: Familiarize yourself with the 100 most commonly used verbs in Spanish. If you still need access to our Quizlet Class, use this link for Spanish 1 and this link for Spanish 2. Try writing sentences with 10-20 of the verbs (or all of them if improving your Spanish proficiency is a major goal for this time). Check out the Guided Studies website if you need some advice on how to make a study schedule or relieve some stress and anxiety.

Spanish 1:

A. Did you finish your Can-Do-Statements from Lesson 4? Not sure? Check the comment section of the Lesson 4 Can-Do-Statements where I've listed the numbers you still need to complete. Then you can complete them on our Spanish 1 Covid 19 School Closure Flipgrid: click on 6 topics to access the 5 Can-Do-Statements and 1 enrichment opportunity for those of you who finished; if you do the enrichment video I'll try and respond to you from my house! The link should bring you to the site but you'll still have to create an account and use this flip code to join: libertypatriots2020

B. Did you finish the project about an important person in your life? I know you won't be able to check your sentences with me in class, but you could send them to me via email. Since this technically wasn't due before the school closure I won't be putting it in the grade book right now, but I would like to see it when (if) we go back to school this year. And, if you finish it, next week there will be a new Flipgrid topic for sharing about your person!

C. Many of you need more practice with Stem-Changing Verbs and Irregular Verbs. This Stem-Changing and Irregular Verbs quizlet set will familiarize you with the meaning of them. If you want to practice using the verbs sign up for my VHL class and do these exercises:

Stem-Changing Verbs: ¡Inténtalo! / Escoger / Practicar verbos / 1 - Identificar / ¡Inténtalo! (2) / 1 - Completar / 2 - Escoger

Irregular Yo Forms: Irregular Yo Form Tutorial / ¡Inténtalo! / Escoger / 1 - Hago muchas cosas / 1 - Describir

Spanish 2:

A. Join this Spanish 2 Covid-19 School Closure FlipGrid, watch my videos and then record yourself reacting to the two topics. You can also watch videos posted by other students. I'm hoping this will be a nice way for us to have some student interactions while we are in cuarentena. The link above will bring you to our group but you will still need to create an account and join using the flip code: sp2liberty

B. How are you at conjugating in the present subjunctive. Our next unit will continue using present subjunctive conjugations so you'll want to make sure you feel as proficient as possible in those conjugations (yo form, switch the ending). Practice the subjuntive through quizlet or VHL. If you still need to join our class for quizlet, use this link: Spanish 2. If you need to join our class on VHL, follow these instructions.

Quizlet Practice: Subjunctive Triggers / Irregular Yo Verbs / Subjunctive Conjugations

VHL Practice: ¡Inténtalo! / 1 - Emociones / 1 - No es probable / Completar

C. Did you finish the work in the packet from last week? Finishing the packet usually means there is a test approaching. We are unlikely to have a test on this unit, but you could complete this Lec. 4 Exam study guide using these 2 clips: escuchar_1_logico.mp3 and escuchar_2_slogans.mp3. Check your answers on study guide answer key

Week of 3/16 - 3/20:

Spanish 1: Make sure that you have completed the two graded worksheets from Lesson 4: Stem-Changing Worksheet and Regular Verb Conjugation Worksheet. Send me a picture of your work and I'll update the gradebook. If you need help, use your Lesson 4 packet or watch the Stem-Changing Verb Tutorial.

Spanish 2: Make sure that you completed the para empezar activities we did in class on pages 3-6 of your Lesson 4 Packet. If you need help on completing the activities you have notes and vocabulary in the packet as well. Additionally, after reading the notes on page 9 or your packet, complete page 10 and then check your work against this page 10 key.
