by Nonto (Molefi) Ntseki
My name is Nonto Ntseki, though many know me by my full name Molefi Ntseki. I was born on August 18, 1969, and my life has been dedicated to South African football. As a South African football coach, my journey has taken me from the youth development ranks to the highest level of the beautiful game in my country.
Growing up in South Africa, football was more than just a game – it was a way of life. From a young age, I understood that football could be a unifying force in our nation, bringing together people from all backgrounds and communities. This understanding would later shape my entire approach to coaching and team management.
My passion for the game led me to pursue a career in football coaching, where I could help develop the next generation of South African talent. I believed then, as I do now, that South Africa has incredible football potential that just needs the right guidance and development.
My coaching career began with various national youth teams, where I spent years learning the intricacies of player development. Working with young players taught me patience, the importance of fundamentals, and how to nurture raw talent into polished skills.
Through my work in youth development, I developed a deep understanding of South African football culture and the unique challenges facing our players. These experiences at the grassroots level would prove invaluable when I eventually stepped up to senior level coaching.
I spent considerable time coaching various national youth teams, always with an eye toward developing a pipeline of talent for the senior national team. This long-term vision was central to my coaching philosophy.
In August 2019, my life changed dramatically when I was appointed as interim manager of the South African senior national team – Bafana Bafana. This was both the opportunity of a lifetime and an enormous responsibility.
The appointment came at a crucial time for South African football. I knew that taking charge of Bafana Bafana meant carrying the hopes and dreams of an entire nation. Every decision I made would be scrutinized, every match would be critical.
Later that same month, I was appointed permanent manager, a moment that filled me with both pride and determination. I was ready to give everything I had to South African football.
My approach to coaching has always been tactical and methodical. I believe in traditional formations like the 4-4-2, trusting in physicality and direct play when the situation calls for it. But I also understand that modern football requires adaptability and flexibility.
Working with Bafana Bafana, I've always emphasized the importance of playing with pride and passion. Representing South Africa is an honor that comes with great responsibility, and I've tried to instill this understanding in every player I've worked with.
My coaching philosophy centers around developing players not just as footballers, but as representatives of our nation. Every time they step onto the pitch wearing the South African jersey, they carry the hopes of millions.
Leading the South African national team has presented numerous challenges. From tactical decisions in crucial matches to managing player expectations and public pressure, every day brings new obstacles to overcome.
I've experienced the full spectrum of emotions that come with coaching at the highest level. There have been dramatic matches where we've fought until the final whistle, games where we've dominated possession but couldn't find the breakthrough, and moments of both triumph and disappointment.
One of my most memorable experiences was leading the team in international competitions, including preparations for tournaments like the African Nations Championship (CHAN). These tournaments represent the pinnacle of African football, where nations come together to celebrate the beautiful game.
Managing South Africa in the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN has been one of the highlights of my coaching career. CHAN represents something special – it's a tournament for players who are based in their home countries, making it truly representative of domestic African football.
Leading South Africa's CHAN squad into tournaments held across East Africa – in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda – has been an incredible experience. The energy from the crowds, the atmosphere in stadiums like the Mandela National Stadium, and the passion of the players all combine to create something magical.
Even in defeat, I've learned to find pride in our performances. After challenging matches, including dramatic encounters that ended goalless, I've always told my players that we move forward. Football teaches resilience, and every setback is an opportunity to learn and improve.
My journey hasn't been without its difficulties. The world of professional football coaching comes with intense pressure and constant scrutiny. I've faced periods of uncertainty and challenges that tested my resolve and commitment to the game.
There have been times when seeking legal advice became necessary to protect my professional interests. These experiences taught me that football coaching involves not just tactical knowledge, but also understanding the business and legal aspects of the sport.
Through all the ups and downs, I've maintained my belief in South African football and our potential to compete with the best teams on the continent and beyond.
My commitment to South African football remains unwavering. Whether working with youth teams, senior national teams, or in other capacities, my goal is always the same: to help South African football reach its full potential.
The future of our game lies in continued development of our young players, investment in coaching education, and maintaining the passion that makes South African football special. Every young player who dreams of representing Bafana Bafana represents hope for our footballing future.
I continue to believe that with the right approach, dedication, and support, South African football can achieve great things. My journey from youth coaching to leading Bafana Bafana has shown me that dreams can become reality with hard work and determination.
