Guimarães is often called the "Cradle City" because it was the administrative centre of the County of Portugal (9th - 12th cs. AD). It is one of the most amazing cities in Portugal, with a historical centre that is a UNESCO world heritage since 2001 in recognition for being an "exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town" in Europe, enlarged in 2023 to the Couros Zone.
