Description: Demolition of 100% of the roof structure of a Contributing rated, one-story, single-family residential building.
Staff Recommendations:
FEMA research indicates that the Eastlake double shotgun at 539 Exposition was constructed from 1885-95. The double shotgun is three rooms deep on each side with a rear shed roof addition. The proposed renovation seeks to remove 100% of the roof to construct a second and third floor. The proposal will also remove the weatherboards, brackets and non-historic jalousie windows primary façade, it is also likely that a substantial part of the exterior walls would need to be restructured to support two more stories. The proposal is a defacto demolition to grade, as there would be no architectural remnant of the double shotgun left, and should be considered as such. For the aforementioned reasons, Staff recommends denial of the proposal and recommends the applicant look into a proposal that keeps more of the historic building.
Recommendation: Denial
