Staff Recommendations:
FEMA research indicates that the single shotgun at 1022 Valence was constructed from 1890-1900. The 1893 Fire Insurance map confirms that a one-story, two room shotgun had been constructed. The 1909 Fire Insurance map shows that a rear addition to the original building had been removed and the main shotgun massing had been extended to the rear portion of the the parcel. By 1951 a camelback addition and rear exterior fire escape for vertical circulation had been added to the rear portion over the early 20th century addition. The proposed renovation seeks to remove the rear camelback addition and build a new camelback addition closer to the front of the building with interior vertical circulation. The HDLC Design Guidelines for full control usually recommends camelbacks start at least two rooms back that condition removal of more than 50% is approvable. Staff recommends approval of the demolition of more than 50%
