Codigos

Those interested to participate in the Encuentro, are requested to browse through Siempre Milonguero.

While not a complete list, we highlight these essential códigos (codes) to ensure a successful event.

Be respectful:

  • Towards your partner. Do not pressure for a dance, allow comfortable space for a rejection. Invitations to dance are initiated by a mirada and confirmed by a cabeceo (a gaze and a nod) from a comfortable distance. Verbal invitations or inching closer to steal someone’s line of sight is inappropriate and may cause rejection or an unpleasant dance of obligation.

  • Towards other couples on the dance floor.

    • Stay connected with your partner by maintaining a close-embrace. Our floor will be cozy, so save the high boleos, ganchos and other large, open maneuvers for another venue. Keep your feet near the floor to ensure a safe dance experience for everyone.

    • Respect the line of dance. Before entering the floor, make eye-contact with the leader you wish to enter in front of. Keep the ronda moving forward by closing large gaps between the dancers in front of you. Stay in your lane and avoid passing other dancers or crisscrossing around the floor. Be aware and respectful of the dancers around you.

  • Towards others seeking a dance. The purpose of the cortina is to clear the dance floor of all dancers between tandas, creating an uninhibited line of sight for the mirada so you can choose a new partner. Avoid initiating invitations to dance during the cortina. Instead, listen to the opening notes of the tanda, and choose an appropriate partner based on the music.
