Benham's Bookstore
The earliest known business located on this site was McTaggart's Bank, which started in the early 1870’s. During this time, the second story of the building was occupied by a printing office. The original structure was a frame building which was destroyed in the fire of 1882.
After the fire, a new building was erected. John Benham purchased the building, and began his business: Benham's Bookstore. The exact date of purchase is unknown but it was most likely in the 1880s.
In 1902, Sarah Jane Benham passed away, and the business was carried on by their son Albert Edward Benham. In 1954, the building was sold to Wm. Craig, who carried on the business until the early 1960s. After approximately 80 years in business, Benham's Bookstore finally closed. MacDonald's Stationery & Gifts took over the building following the closure. The business operated for an unknown amount of time. Today, the building is occupied by apartments.
