Brewer & Harrison Hardware
In the 1870’s this site was occupied by T. A. Mayburry’s Clothing Store. It is thought that Mayburry also ran a hotel from this location, which was called the Central Hotel, but there is definitely some mystery surrounding it's precise location. The building was later occupied by the Milburn and Monroe General Store. The original structure burned down in the fire of 1882, which spread all the way to 185 King.
A new building, most likely the one we see today, was erected on this site in the early 1880’s. This building includes 187 King. The structure was used as a hotel that also went by the Central Hotel name. The first known owner to have operated this hotel was Robert C. Thompson. Shortly after Thompson purchased this hotel, he passed away, leaving the business to his wife Ellen Thompson.
Mrs. Thompson sold the hotel to William and Rebecca Simpson in 1889. Soon after, Mr. Simpson fell into financial trouble, and the British Mortgage and Loan Company took ownership.
The building was sold in 1900 to Jessie E. Magladery, who started her hardware business with her sons. Magladery sold the business shortly after, and the building became W. A. MacDonalds Hardware Store. A.W. Brewer and J.E. Harrison took ownership of the business in 1904, and the store was henceforth named Brewer and Harrison Hardware. This business was sold to A.G. Webb in 1944, and he renamed the business Webb's Hardware. He sold the business in the 1960s. Today, the building is occupied by HMS Insurance.
