Original Town Hall
In 1864, John Harrison built the first gristmill in Parkhill on or close to this site. The mill burned in 1877 and was reconstructed on Mill St a few years later.
In 1893, the original town hall was constructed on the plot where the post office is now located. The ground floor contained council chambers, a police office, and a fire hall. The basement contained a two cell town jail, which was more often used as shelter for wandering train hoppers, or a change room for children using the outdoor skating rink, than it was for actual criminals. The second floor housed a large auditorium, which held theatre productions, school concerts, and dances.
In 1968, the Post Office and the town swapped their property. This meant that the post office would sit on the plot of the old town hall, and the old post office would become the town hall. The original town hall was torn down, and the construction of the new post office, the one we see today, was finished in 1969.
